It is my pleasure to present our first
edition of The FULL THROTTLE
Magazine. This publication is a
result of sleepless nights, days in
the sun and rain, and an effort to
satisfy the needs of motorsports
fans who follow the various aspects
of the sports in Barbados and the
wider Caribbean.
This is an effort to move our
coverage to a more accessible
digital platform. One that will add
value for the corporate sponsors
who gave us their loyal support
over the years.
Dane Skeete
Dane Skeete dominated Rally
Barbados 2022 from the first stage,
SS1 Pickering, only relinquishing the
lead to one other competitor, Stuart
Maloney, on seven of the nineteen
stages. Dane piloted the Subaru
through the twists and turns and
over the saddle back in Dark Hold,
in a manner reminiscent of a
graceful ballet dance, accompanied
by the distinctive music of the S12’s 1994 CC
turbocharged engine.
After graduating from his previous ride, a
Peugeot 306 Maxi, Dane showed that he is both
comfortable and capable of competing in the
faster Subaru which was previously campaigned
by his father, the legendary Roger Skeete.
In addition to winning Rally Barbados 2022,
Dane's winning of the event in 2019 and
capturing of The Barbados Rally Club's 2019 4WD
and WRC Class Championship, confirmed that he
is indeed making his mark on the very
competitive sport. Winning two of the last three
blue riband locally staged international rally
events, Dane is quite possibly a legend in the
making
Dane Skeete, Rally Barbados’ 2019 winner, on his way to winning Rally
Barbados 2022, after setting the fastest time on stage SS1 Pickering,
Josh Read, seen here on the Dark Hole stage, started RB'22 with the
second fastest time on SS1 Pickering. Josh in the newly acquired ex-Sol
Esuf Ford Fiesta R5, despite having some challenges on day one, finished
the rally first in R5 and 2nd overall.

Stuart Maloney and co-driver Kristian Yearwood, in their skoda Fabia Rally2
evo, were fastest on SS2 and SS3, Dark Hole and Kendal respectfully. They
were leading the rally at the end of day, but damaged a wheel on their first run
through Dark Hole on Sunday morning. This saw the end of their rally
Zane Maloney, the winner of King Of The Hill the previous weekend, was
under pressure from Dane Skeete and his uncle Stuart from stage 1. He was
however taking the fight to them and making good times, when on the first
stage on Sunday, he exited Duck Pond a little too hot and struck a pole
damaging a wheel. That ended his rally.

Mark Thompson and Kurt Seabra took the fight the higher classes and
finished in an enviable sixth place overall and convincingly won their class.
Justin Campbell and Ayrton Bannister in their BMW M3, were the
winners of the 2WD category and Modified 3 (M3).

Two broken driveshafts and electrical gemlins plagued Frank Bird on day one,
to add to that co-driver Jack fainted from heat exhaustion. An over time limit
(OTL) penalty was their demise.
Jeffrey Panton was 5th fastest on the opening stage, but his rally was
cut short on SS2, Dark Hole, when he collided with a bridge.

The Changing Of The Guards
As the old motorsports guards beat
their timely retreat, motorsports in
Barbados is being given a new lease
on life with the infusion of new energy
from a set of young, enthusiastic and
capable competitors.
This group of youngsters are stepping
up to take over where Trevor Manning,
Paul Bourne, Roger Skeete, St.Elmo
Cumberbatch and many others have
left off. Zane Maloney, Tremaine
Forde-Catwell and Dane Skeete, to
name a few, are ensuring that the
sport remains competitive,
entertaining and a major attraction for
locals and visitors alike.
The youngsters, while new to rallying,
are not totally new to the sport. They
were competing in Karting for many
years, and have a comprehensive
understanding of the demands and
discipline needed to make their mark
in this competitive sport.
MONCET SETS SIGHTS HIGH FOR WRC FINLAND

Hyundai Motorsport boss Julien Moncet
has set his drivers the tough target of
improving on last year’s second and third
place finishes at Secto Rally Finland.
Deputy team director Moncet was
disappointed with the pace of the squad’s
i20 N Rally1 cars at this month’s Rally
Estonia. He acknowledged that more
development was needed on fundamental
parts to match the dominant Toyota GR
Yaris cars ahead. The gravel roads near
Jyväskylä are even faster than those across
the Gulf of Finland but Moncet remains
optimistic that Ott Tänak, Thierry Neuville
and Oliver Solberg can overcome the
balance and handling problems that have
plagued the team this year.“Although
Finland was not an event we had
traditionally performed well at previously,
we were able to get two crews on the
podium last year and that was a great
achievement for us,” he said. It is our hope
that we can do the same at this year’s
rally, if not do even better.”
Tänak finished runner-up last season with
Craig Breen, now driving for M-Sport Ford,
claiming the bottom step of the podium at
an event that was held two months later
than the 2022 fixture in Finland’s autumn.
Estonian Tänak was third on home roads a
fortnight ago and Moncet believes the
knowledge gained from that rally will help
his team at the eighth round of the FIA
World Rally Championship. “Estonia was
good preparation for us as it is a similar
type of event. The gap between Estonia
and Finland has been very short so we
must manage our expectations slightly,
however we will still push to the limit,” he
added.

Tanak celebrating after winning Rally Italia Sardegna
Tänak is the most experienced of Hyundai’s trio in Finland. This will be his 12th start and
he has banked back-to-back wins in 2018 and 2019.
“With how fast the stages are and the number of crests you really need a car that stays on
the ground and is also very precise. The set-up is challenging but we have confidence we
can perform well,” explained the 34-year-old.
“Finland is always special and I have a lot of respect for the rally. I’ve been there many
times in the past, but every time you arrive there you still get the same ‘wow’ effect
because it is a great event and the roads are definitely made for rallying.”

THE NEW KING OF THE HILL
Zane had an off in the first
run. The second was
contested in the wet, but
conditions improved on
the third run. It was on
that run that he recorded
his quickest time of
2:19.63.
On the fourth and final
run of the day, Zane
served up dough nuts,
much to the delight of the
fans.
Zane who is currently racing in FIA F3 is the
youngest person to be crowned King Of The Hill.
In 2019, as a rookie, he won the 2019 British F4
championship.

At right is Mango, my favorite car of the rally.
This is what was left of their car after Simon and Fiona had an off on SS3
Kendal. They approached a left four a bit too hot and ended up off the road,
and out of sight of passing vehicles. Simon had to honk the horn to help the
emergency crew to locate them.
Even a broken leg did not stop Simon from attending the ceremony at the
Boat Yard. The Full Trottle team would like to wish Simon a full recovery.

Hungarian Grand Prix podium finish for Hamilton.
It was another double podium for Mercedes at the Hungarian Grand Prix, and
Lewis Hamilton feels confident that the team are closing the gap to their
competitors.
Lewis Hamilton suspects that the cooler conditions at Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix may
have helped the team to secure a double podium result.
After starting from P7, Hamilton displayed impressive pace during the latter stages of the
race and ended the event in second place.
Teammate George Russell – who had taken his debut pole position in Saturday's qualifying
– was unable to hold onto the lead, but still finished in third, while Max Verstappen took
victory.
Hamilton admits that he had a tough start to the afternoon, but that he was able to catch
the leaders as the event went on.
When asked where his late-race speed had come from, the Mercedes driver explained: "I
honestly don't know. I was definitely struggling at the beginning of the race and wasn't
sure whether I'd be able to catch the guys up.
"But, bit by bit, [I] got a bit more comfortable with the balance. [I] had a really good start as
well."
