MICHAELA HARDINGSenior, majoring in East Asian Studies and English, who is consideringa graduate degree in an East Asian language to hone hertranslation skillsWhat made you decide on this major?"I studied Japanese in high school and traveled to Japan after my junior year as astudent ambassador with the KC Heart of America Japan-America Society. Thatexperience made me rethink what I wanted to do with my life, and I definitelyknew it had to do with East Asia, so I picked an East Asian Studies major. I addedon English to work in the editing/publishing/translating field as well."What do you want to pursue after graduation?"After graduation, I am thinking of pursuing a graduate program in Korea or Japanto improve my language and translation skills."How do you practice your language skills?"'Immersing' myself is how I practice, by watching TV in that language, listening topodcasts or radio shows, or reading news articles online. It's important to not passivelytake in all that information, but actively listen for words you can pick out, or newwords you can learn."What has been your favorite course so far?"My favorite courses have been all of my language classes at every level. Getting topractice, study, and learn in a classroom among peers is fun for me, and I have lovedlearning new things at every level, so I don't think I could pick just one languageclass.What tips do you have for students wanting to learn Mandarin?Japanese is a difficult language mostly because of its writing system. What's helpfulis by learning new kanji, or Chinese characters, you can also learn new words at thesame time. But it is important to practice kanji that you've learned before because itis harder to remember when you need to than you think! So, always study up on thatkanji, because it will really help you learn vocabulary and prepare for the future.22
