This issue is exemplified by thefact that some researchers have estimated that62.1% bankruptcies in the US were caused in partbecause of medical expenses. There are manyfactors contributing to the high price ofhealthcare in the US, including lobbying from thepharmaceutical industry and administrativeexpenses.Drug prices are astronomically high in the USwhen compared to those of other developedcountries. In fact, in many cases, drugs can costanywhere from four to sixty-seven times more inthe United States than in other developedcountries. As a result, many people are unable toreceive the life-saving drugs that they need andare forced to either go without medication or turnto illegal methods to obtain drugs. This representsa positive feedback loop. As people resort todangerous methods of dealing with the high costof drugs, people’s health deteriorates, and theyend up needing more medication. For example,Gleevec, a revolutionary chemotherapy treatmentfor Leukemia, costs an average of $10,233 whilethe same drug costs $2,206 in Japan. Gleevec’sclinical trial was sponsored by the NationalCancer Institute, a part of the National Institutes ofHealth; however, in America the drug costs themost when compared to other developedcountries.A major driver of this extremely high cost is thepharmaceutical industry. Unlike other countries,the United States allows almost all drugs that areconsidered safe to come to market and allowseach pharmaceutical company to determine itsown prices. As a result, drugs can have massivelydifferent prices between countries, and drugprices are regularly changed to influence stockprices. In fact, in a recent hearing with AbbVie, alarge pharmaceutical company that created thebestselling drug in the industry, Humira, CEORichard Gonzalez and Katie Porter described thatas Humira prices have increased 470%, AbbViehas spent only $2.45 billion on research anddevelopment, but close to $50 billion onenriching stockholders. In order to allow thisimmoral issue, big pharmaceutical companieshave resorted to lobbying politicians to permitthese actions to be swept under the rug. In fact,just last year, pharmaceutical giants spent $306million to lobby the federal government tocontinue to allow this behavior.
