WELCOME TO AUSTRIA, KÄRNTEN,
KLAGENFURTAM WÖRTHERSEE
Mother nature meant well when she created Carinthia, Austria’s sunny south. Numerous
unpolluted, warm bathing lakes await visitors here in the middle of the Alps. So do mountains,
ranging from the mighty three-thousanders to the gentle Nock Mountains. From their peaks,
the view roams over a country that is characterized by the cultural diversity of the Alpe-Adria
region, by the mild and sunny climate on the southern side of the Alps and by people who greet
their guests cheerfully, openly and with a large helping of joie de vivre. Carinthia boasts more
bodies of water than any other state in Austria - it has no fewer than 200 bathing lakes, 8,000
kilometres of rivers, 60 mineral springs and 43 glaciers.
During the course of the year, Carinthia is a popular stage for sports events. Those of
international fame include Lake Weissensee’s alternative to Dutch eleven cities tour (ice
skating marathon), the United World Games, the Ironman, European Bike Week, and
international soccer matches. Especially the region close to the Wörthersee is ideal for major
sports events: the weather is mostly sunny, there are several sports venues suitable for
international competitions, and the distances between the various kinds of accommodations
and the sports venues are short.
It is difficult to select a representative overview from the variety of cultural activities in
Carinthia. The highlights include the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize – the Festival of German-
Language Literature, the Carinthian Summer Music Festival, and the Wörthersee Classics
Festival. Among the museums that are especially worth visiting are the Carinthian Museum of
Modern Art, the Museum Liaunig, one of the largest private collections of contemporary art in
Austria, and the Werner Berg Museum. Theatrical events await not only at the Klagenfurt
Municipal Theatre, but also at the Neue Bühne Villach theatre and the numerous summer
festivals.
Another important aspect is the cultural diversity: Carinthia has borders with Italy and Slovenia.
Thus, Carinthia has a rich cultural heritage. This is also reflected in the Carinthian Alpe-Adria
cuisine, which blends fresh ingredients from the region, ancient cooking traditions and new
interpretations into a delicious whole.
WELCOME TO AUSTRIA, KÄRNTEN,
KLAGENFURTAM WÖRTHERSEE
Klagenfurt is a provincial capital in the southern part of Austria and the historical, economic,
and cultural heart of Carinthia. It is located on the eastern shore of Lake Wörthersee. The
landmark of this town is the Lindwurm, a winged dragon whose monument is on the Neuer
Platz. Nearby, frescoes and reliefs adorn the opulent 16th-century cathedral. Baroque and
Renaissance buildings line the narrow streets around the Old Square, which is home to the
bright yellow 17th –century Old Town Hall.
The city lies in the center of three cultures: It takes only 45 minutes to drive to Italy and only 30
minutes to reach Slovenia by car.
Klagenfurt has about 102.000 inhabitants. The town still has a beautiful historic center with
restored arcaded Renaissance courtyards: Klagenfurt was awarded the prestigious Europa
Nostra Diploma three times. There you can find exquisite restaurants, nice boutiques, and
historic churches. On the New Square (Neuer Platz) is the Lindwurm Fountain, a famous tourist
attraction.
Don’t miss the following attractions:
- Minimundus: replica of the world’s most famous buildings
- Planetarium
- Reptilienzoo: zoo presenting about 1,000 reptiles
- Boat trips on the Wörthersee
- Stadtpfarrturm: church in the center of Klagenfurt
- Kreuzbergl: recreation area
OUR VALUES
SPORTUNION supports international human rights. This becomes apparent in the following
aspects:
• In 2020, SPORTUNION Kärnten integrated a Code of Honor into its statutes (see
attachment „Code of Honor“). This document has to be signed by all employees
responsible for the event.
• To prevent risks, experts are part of the OK team; in addition, external partners have been
involved in the organization of the event.
• All delegations have to ensure, that the athletes have sufficient insurance coverage. The
proof of insurance for each athlete has to be submitted to the OK office.
• In case of violation of the Code of Honor of SPORTUNION, especially with regard to the
prevention of sexual harassment, a responsible multiplier of SPORTUNION Kärnten will be
available. As a sports psychologist, she will serve as a highly qualified contact person
during the entire event. This will also be announced on the website. In addition, one
member of the OK team is also a member of “100%Sport”, the Austrian center for gender
competence in sports. The handout „For Respect and Safety“ will be available in the OK
office. SPORTUNION developed a schedule for interventions that becomes effective, if
cases of violation of the Code of Honor or of sexual harassment are reported:
https://sportunion.at/projekte/fuer-respekt-und-sicherheit/#intervention
• In the Youth Forum, the young people will have the opportunity to independently work on
specific topics and to present these. In this way, their self-confidence will be
strengthened and it is ensured, that their voices will be heard.
• The Code of Honor also integrates additional children’s rights. In order to guarantee the
best possible health care for the athletes, two ambulances will be on duty during the
opening and the closing ceremony. One representative of the Medical Committee of
FICEP (physician and doping control officer) will be available during the entire event. For
mental health issues, the multiplier of SPORTUNION (a sports psychologist) will serve as a
contact person.
• In cooperation with NADA Austria, an anti-doping desk will be organized to provide
necessary information. To stress the importance of fairness and respect, during the
opening ceremony representatives of the referees, coaches, and athletes will make an
oath. Furthermore, the Fair Play Awards will be awarded (see attachment). All sports
competitions are open for male and female athletes. Reports in the media (website, social
media) will follow the guidelines of SPORTUNION (see attachment).
• In order to protect the environment, free public transportation between accommodations
and sports facilities will be offered during the games and already existing infrastructure is
used. Also every athlete will receive a bottle to be used for the whole week. Our tab water is
perfectly clean.
• To solve problems and react to complaints the OK office will be open daily and two
meetings of the heads of delegation will take place. At the sports venues, the OTIs will
supervise, if competitions are fair and all participants follow the values of FISEC and
FICEP.
General information about the FISEC-
FICEP Games
The Fédération Internationale Catholique d'Education Physique et sportive' - abbreviated FICEP
- was founded as Union Internationale des Oeuvres Catholiques d'Education Physique' in 1911
and currently consists of 12 member associations. Its current name was given to the
organization in 1947. The FICEP is an international sports association acting on the basis of
ethical ideals of Christianity, advocating the Christian ideas of man in sports and communities.
The FICEP understands sports as a means of development for each individual on the basis of
the message of the Gospel regarding physical, mental, social, ethical and cultural aspects.
In addition to that the FICEP communicates ideals like fairness, tolerance, charity or respect of
life via the means of sports. The organization assists young people by offering them the
possibility to carry out sports activities on an international basis and to engage for the
advancement of nations in a globalized world.
FISEC is an international schoolsports organization. FISEC’s members are national sports and
schoolsports organizations with a catholic signature. The main objective of FISEC is to organize
every year the FISEC Games. Participation in the FISEC games is open to members and
potential members.
Although FISEC and FICEP have a long tradition in the organization of sports games, the
partnership between the two associations started in 2011. The first joint games took place in
2014 in Strebersdorf, Austria. In 2016, the games were organized in Beauvais (France), then in
Genk (Flanders, Belgium) and in Bucharest (Romania). Due to the COVID-19-pandemic,
unfortunately the games had to be cancelled in 2020 and 2021. Thus, Come back stronger is the
slogan of the FISEC/FICEP-Games in 2022 in Klagenfurt/Wörthersee.
Cultural aspects
The FICEP/FISEC games bring together young people from all over the world. As a result, a
variety of cultures will characterize the games and various languages – German, English,
Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, and several others – will be heard.
The opening and the closing ceremony will take place in a huge sports hall, so that all
participants can celebrate together. Besides the official speeches, there will be a show
program organized by local clubs to give athletes from other disciplines the opportunity to
present themselves.
The bazaar will be organized at the Sportpark. The participants will be able to present the
culture of their home countries and sell traditional products. In doing so, money for a charity
project will be collected.
As a culture trip, a paper chase through the historic center of Klagenfurt will take place. The
young athletes will have to solve funny tasks and, in doing so, will learn a lot about the city.
Social aspects
The FICEP/FISEC Games will bring together roughly 800 young athletes from all over the world
and from different cultures. Especially because the games had to be cancelled due to the
COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the event in 2022 in Klagenfurt sets an example by
motivating people to do sports together.
The Sportpark will be the center of the games, where most of the sports venues will be
situated, as well as the Youth forum, ceremonies and the meetings.
“Come back stronger” is the focus of the games. In the Youth forum discussions will be held in
connection with social themes.
During the bazaar, a cultural exchange evening, the young athletes will be given the chance to
present their home countries and collect money for a charity project.
Community and fairplay are also central values of these games. Therefore, by the end the
games, Fairplay Awards will be awarded.
Sports aspects
Of course, a big part of the FICEP/FISEC Games are the sport events. The FICEP/FISEC Games
can be compared to Olympic Games for young athletes, only a bit smaller.
Participants from 14 countries will present their achievements in the following disciplines:
athletics, swimming, table tennis, basketball, volleyball and futsal.
All sports venues are designed for national and international competitions. All competitions will
take place under international conditions and the supervision of official referees. An important
element is the integration of junior referees, who will be able to gain valuable experiences
under the supervision of experienced experts.
SPORTS INFRASTRUCTURE
All the sports facilities are dirstibuted throughout Klagenfurt, except for the swimming
competitions. They are all state of the art and competitions are regularly held there.
Sportpark Klagenfurt is the biggest venue, where the opening and closing ceremony will take
place as well as volleyball competitions and the bazaar.
The Sportpark Halle is one of the largest multifunctional sports halls in Austria and was
completed in 2013. The facility is designed as a quadruple hall for sporting as well as cultural
and social events and is equipped with state-of-the-art sound technology as well as video wall.
The athletics facility, Leopold Wagner Arena, was only opened in May 2012 and offers the
athletes a corresponding modern infrastructure.
In addition to a modern running track with 8 running tracks, a covered winter running track and
various jumping and throwing facilities, the athletes also have spacious lawns available for their
training sessions.
