The Increasingly Detrimental Situation of Pharmaceutical Drug Costs in the United States Part 1/2 In any society, effective medical care and services are vital for growth and success. Optimal health is an important aspect of life, and a comprehensive healthcare system that truly values patient care will help create a more effective population. One area that plays a critical role in the healthcare system of the United States is prescription drugs. Medicine and drugs have advanced significantly over the past century, leading to life-saving cures and improvements in the quality of life. Consequently, pharmaceutical drug companies play an increasingly significant role in, not only the American healthcare system, but American society. Even though the United States has some of the brightest minds in biomedical research and drugs are becoming ever so effective, the costs for these vital medications have skyrocketed over recent years. This has made necessary prescription drugs unaffordable for many families across the country. A 2019 Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) Health Tracking Poll recently found that nearly 8 out of 10 Americans believe that the high costs of prescription drugs are unreasonable (Lopes 2019). In such a scientifically advanced nation like the United States, why must people sacrifice so much to obtain basic medications? This is an ever-growing problem that has recently gained the attention of news outlets and lawmakers across the nation, as many Americans are starting to realize its detrimental effects. As high prices of medications start to become the norm, many are turning to Washington to focus on making pharmaceutical drugs affordable for all Americans.
