THE CAMPAIGN TO BUILD
THE NATIONAL COAST
GUARD MUSEUM
WHEN THE MOST
IS EXPECTED
“The National Coast Guard Museum remains the Service’s top philanthropic
priority. The Coast Guard is the only branch of the armed services without a
national museum to celebrate our role in our Nation’s life and honor those who
have served. I am very excited about the forthcoming National Coast Guard
Museum! The Coast Guard has a rich history with stories that deserve to be told.”
—ADM Linda Fagan, Commandant, United States Coast Guard
CASE STATEMENT
PAGE 1
A MUSEUM TO
HONOR | ENGAGE | EDUCATE | INSPIRE
A MULTI-MISSION FORCE
AROUND THE GLOBE
Our Nation expects the most from the U.S. Coast Guard and
relies on its leadership, training, bravery, innovation, and experience.
Since its inception in 1790, the Coast Guard and its predecessor
services have tirelessly answered the call to duty, saving lives,
enforcing maritime law, combating terrorism, facilitating commerce
and protecting the environment. The vital responsibilities of the Coast
Guard are carried out by highly trained men and women who perform
these missions with honor, respect and devotion to duty.
Yet, unlike all other Armed Services, there is no place for the Coast
Guard to share with the public its history and tangible artifacts.
These hallowed items are currently crated and stored in a facility not
accessible to the public. That is why this Coast Guard initiative is so
important and why the Museum Association was formed. We must
illustrate our country’s appreciation for the Coast Guard, educate
the public about the maritime challenges our Nation faces, and
demonstrate how the Service and its partners meet these challenges.
Our country needs a National Coast Guard Museum to honor the
legacy and visualize the future of the Coast Guard.
The National Coast Guard Museum will engage, educate, and inspire
visitors from around the country by honoring the courage and skill
of the men and women of our Nation’s unsung armed service. The
Museum will explore the Coast Guard’s rich history and current impact
on the United States and the world through interactive exhibits; science,
technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) based learning
experiences; leadership development programming; and public/
private partnerships.
When the Most is expected, the U.S. Coast
Guard has delivered the most for us.
They are always ready–Semper Paratus.
Now is the time for us to do the Most for them
storylines: Lifesavers around the Globe, Defenders of our Nation, Enforcers
Interactive galleries, exhibits, and programming will bring to life
the stories and missions of the Coast Guard. Its remarkable history
will be honored through five story lines: Defenders of our Nation,
Enforcers on the Seas, Lifesavers around the Globe, Champions
Over 200 galleries and exhibits were designed for the Coast Guard
by museum experts, SEARCH, Inc. and Eisterhold Associates, Inc.
Below, a sample of the storylines in each wing provides a sense of
how the remarkable narrative of the Service will be experienced.
I owe all the success I’ve enjoyed in life to the amazing
educational opportunities and adventures the Coast
Guard provided. I feel like, you can’t take it with you,
and if you’re successful, you have a responsibility to help
those who deserve it.
• CT Delegation helped to secure $50M for museum construction in
the 2022 Federal Appropriation
• Construction will commence in late Q3 of 2022
• Gallery and exhibit layout are completed and content development
is proceeding
MUSEUM & PEDESTRIAN ACCESS DESIGN
The museum design is complete, and the project is shovel ready.
Payette is the architectural firm and A/Z Corporation is the construction
manager for the project. All required permitting is now complete.
THE COAST GUARD HAS SET A GOAL TO OPEN THE
MUSEUM IN 2024
Museum Construction Phase 1 consists of bulkhead and fill to create a
regular coastline platform on which to construct the five-story structure.
The museum building constitutes Construction Phase 2. In the final phase,
the pedestrian access project is completed.
EXHIBIT DESIGN
The Coast Guard hired firms with museum expertise to assist them
in curating artifacts and developing galleries of exhibits. The exhibit
design work group has developed over 200 galleries and exhibits
based on background work provided by the Museum Association’s
Exhibit Advisory Panel (2017) and Education Initiative (2018).
Student visitors will learn about the unique way in which young Coast
Guard men and women are entrusted with immense responsibility.
LA’SHANDA HOLMES is the Coast Guard’s first African
American female helicopter pilot. After growing up in the foster care
system, she put herself through college and became a pilot, conducting
edifying out-of-classroom experiences and
team building exercises. The Museum will
provide a comprehensive immersion into
Coast Guard Life with experiences that will
appeal to all visitors. Examples of planned
experiences include:
• A simulated Coast Guard Qualification
program, which requires participants
to garner knowledge, demonstrate
competencies, and execute a mission
in the Petty Officer Arnold D. Palmer
Simulation Center located in the STEM
Discovery Center.
• Immersive galleries, which introduce
visitors to Coast Guard trailblazers
spanning over two centuries of the
Service’s history.
• Future opportunities include the ability
to teach the leadership secrets of the
THE POWER
FAMILY
The J.D. Power III Stewardship Deck contains the Champions of
Commerce Wing and the Protectors of the Environment
Wing. The exhibits showcase how the Service protects the
Nation’s economic and environmental prosperity. Heroes are
heralded for the safekeeping of resources, wildlife, and commerce.
RECOGNIZING
THE MOST
GENEROUS
PARTNERS
All donations, including multi-year pledges, will be appropriately
acknowledged. Donors of $50,000 or more will be identified
on the Wall of Philanthropy and gifts over $100,000 are
recognized with a prominent naming opportunity. There are
a myriad of opportunities for contributors to connect their
gift to a subject, event, historic artifact, exhibit or program
that is most meaningful.
I am excited that this
museum will create a
place to teach a child that
America has always
raised heroes, and you can
be one, if you measure up
to these heroes within.
