USCTA President’s Report I am delighted to report that 2008-2009 season has been a tremendous success. The USCTA has hosted the Ladies’ World Championship, there have been many new faces winning tournaments, the New England Team won the Whitney Cup and the support of the members and their James D. Wharton (USCTA President) clubs has been exceptional. Everyone is to be congratulated for their contributions and achievements. Of course none of this would be possible without the dedicated work of the Club Representatives, the At Large Governors and the professionals. Each club has their own unique management situation, but at the end of the day the focus continues to be providing opportunities for members to learn and improve their game. The result is a healthy competitive and collegial experience that is always on display during the season. TOURNAMENTS There have been two noticeable themes through this past season and they have been change and youth. Two particular amateur players stand out and they are Addison West and Pat Winthrop. Addison won the New York Silver Racquet and the US Amateur Singles and was a finalist in the Tuxedo Gold Racquet and the US Amateur Doubles with Peter Pell. Pat Winthrop was a critical factor in the New England victory in the Whitney Cup and he also won the US Parent Child, the US Junior Nationals, the US Mixed Doubles, the Jimmy Knott, and the Newport Handicap Doubles and was the finalist in the New York Silver Racquet. The youth movement continued with Caroline Lippincott winning the Lieb Cup with Paul Monaghan and the Anne Boleyn. And last but not least it should be noted that Camden Riviere won the US Open Singles and Doubles. Although we all regard Cam as a seasoned veteran, it is important to note that he is in his early 20’s. These young faces are the future of the game and it is gratifying to see them reaching the top level of the game at such a young age. This has not always been the case in the past and it bodes well for the US game in the future. The USCTA needs to develop younger players who can be com- Page 2 Ladies’ World Champion Charlotte Cornwallis. photo by Michael Do petitive on the international stage as we now have a very active match schedule with the Bathurst, Clothier and Van Alen Cup Team competitions. Many new first time winners, in national events, appeared this season including Jeff Horine (Boston) - Noll Cup, Bradley Ursprung (Boston) - Wharton Cup, Bill Connors (Boston) - Burke Cup, Warren Knapp (Boston) - Etchebaster, Dana Kopald (Aiken) - Hickey Cup, Amy Hayball (Newport) - US Mixed Doubles, Beth Winthrop (Newport) - US Parent Child, Rich Moroscak (Washington) - US 40’s Amateur Doubles, Guy Devereux (Tuxedo) - US 40’s Amateur Singles & Doubles and Andrew Purcell (Philadelphia) - Greevy Cup. From the above list it would seem to indicate that Boston has some fine young talented players coming through their program. LADIES’ WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS The USCTA and the National Tennis Club were delighted to host the 2009 Ladies’ World Championships. The Organizing Committee headed by Jane Lippincott and Sheila Reilly produced the week long event that culminated in a dramatic final with World Champion, Charlotte Cornwallis retaining her title with a win over Karen Hird. Charlotte and Karen prevailed over Amy Hayball and Juliette Lambert in the doubles final.
