Came good over fences in 2m Southwell handicap in January and better form
when giving Jonbon a run for his money in a match race at Warwick in February.
Confirmed he’s an improved performer of late when bagging another handicap
win at Doncaster last month.
Opened chase account in a match at Newcastle (2m) in February and followed
up in a 3-runner novice at Catterick (19f) 12 days ago. Stable tasted Grade 1
novice chase success at the Cheltenham Festival but shock if this one follows
suit.
4 JONBON (FR) (32) (C, D) 100
1121-1112 7 11-7 | 73.0kg
Nicky Henderson
Aidan Coleman
Won 2m novice hurdle at this meeting last season and has shown even better
form over fences this time round, winning first 3 starts before good 5½ lengths
second of 9 to El Fabiolo in Arkle at Cheltenham (2m, good to soft) last month.
Hard to beat.
Henry de Bromhead, Ireland
Rachael Blackmore
6-y-o who confirmed promise of chase debut when running out good winner
of a Punchestown novice in November. Not seen to best effect on both outings
since and remains capable of better. Lot of improvement needed to trouble
Jonbon, though.
6 NOTLONGTILLMAY (30) 92
Adam Wedge
Fairly useful hurdles winner for Chris Gordon last term and immediate
improvement switched to fences for new yard, winning novice handicaps on
first 3 starts before excellent 3¼ lengths second of 7 to Stage Star in Grade 1
Turners at Cheltenham (2½m). Back down in trip. Should go well.
TIMEFORM VIEW:
It’s hard to see past JONBON who went down to a top-class rival at Cheltenham and can
land a novice win at this meeting for the second year running. Notlongtillmay gets the
1 GOOD TIME JONNY (IRE) (30) t 100
19-P40301 8 12-0 | 76.2kg
A. J. Martin, Ireland L. A. McKenna (5lb/2kg)
Three-time winner last term who produced a pretty astonishing performance to
land the Pertemps at Cheltenham last month, only a couple behind 2 out and
finding plenty to lead final 100 yds. 5 lb rise on the back of that looks fair and
he’s well in the mix again.
2 ITCHY FEET (FR) (30) (D) 97
4PP-46120 9 11-9 | 73.9kg
Olly Murphy
Sean Bowen
Rejuvenated by return to hurdles when landing 12-runner Huntingdon handicap
(25f) in January prior to good second in Grade 2 next time. Not disgraced when
midfield in Pertemps on his latest outing but his present mark demands that bit
more in competitive races of this nature.
3 ERNE RIVER (IRE) (56) (BF) 96
111F3-224 8 11-9 | 73.9kg
Nick Kent
Charlie Hammond
Dual novice hurdle winner who improved to score twice over fences at around
21f last year. Bright start to present campaign, not least when second back over
hurdles at Doncaster (24.3f) in December. Latest run in Rendlesham was below
par but given an 8-week break ahead of this.
4 VINA ARDANZA (IRE) (28) 98
3-4FF9204 6 11-9 | 73.9kg
Gordon Elliott, Ireland
A. P. Kelly (5lb/2kg)
Useful hurdler who produced best effort to date when runner-up at Naas (20f)
in November, closing all the way to the line. Disappointed at Leopardstown next
time and probably found competition a little hot on return at Thurles last month.
This more suitable
5 GATSBY GREY (FR) (41) t 99
471-2P753 7 11-8 | 73.5kg
Oliver McKiernan, Ireland
Phillip Enright
Bumper/dual novice hurdle winner who ran best race to date tackling 3m for
the first time when fifth at Leopardstown in February. Faced stiff task taking on
some smart rivals back there (18.3f) 6 weeks ago and possible he can do better
still back at this sort of trip.
6 DOLPHIN SQUARE (IRE) (28) (D) s 97
1911-1408 9 11-7 | 73.0kg
Philip Hobbs & Johnson White
Ben Jones
Five wins over hurdles and fences in a very productive 2021/22 campaign. Picked
up where he’d left off with 3m Sandown handicap win on reappearance in
December but below that level in his 3 outings since.
7 MILL GREEN (30) 99
1FU233-33 11 11-6 | 72.6kg
Nicky Henderson
Nico de Boinville
Ran a cracker when third in this race 12 months ago and, at the age of 11 has
proved himself as good as ever in 2 starts this term, again filling third for second
successive year in last month’s Pertemps at Cheltenham. No reason why he won’t
give another good account of himself.
8 BARDENSTOWN LAD (69) s 97
113-F5339 8 11-6 | 72.6kg
John McConnell, Ireland
B. W. Harvey (5lb/2kg)
Useful hurdler last season, winning 4 times prior to an excellent third in the
Albert Bartlett at the Cheltenham Festival in March. Well below that level in 3
starts over fences this campaign though, and he again struggled to make an
impact back over hurdles at Musselburgh (23.8f) in February.
9 AN TAILLIUR (FR) (30) (D) 99
1U121-236 7 11-6 | 72.6kg
Jonjo O’Neill
Jonjo O’Neill Jr.
Major improver in handicaps last season, winning a remarkable 7 times and still
has races in him from this mark judged on recent exploits, not really getting
the rub of the green but staying on into sixth in last month’s Pertemps at
Cheltenham. Worth considering here.
10 PARTY BUSINESS (IRE) (56) (CD) s 99
1F551-495 7 11-4 | 71.7kg
Ian Williams
Charlie Todd
Real eye-catcher at last year’s Cheltenham Festival and confirmed as much when
running out a determined winner of this race 12 months ago. Pretty low-key
efforts upon returning to action this year but no surprise to see a better showing
here and his mark has eased.
11 GLIMPSE OF GALA (30) (D) s 97
17-322110 7 11-3 | 71.2kg
Charlie Longsdon
Bradley Roberts (7lb/3kg)
Likeable mare who scored at Kempton (24.5f) over Christmas and she again
proved tenacious when following up at Warwick (25f) in January. Not at her best
from career-high mark in the Pertemps 4 weeks ago but her regular pilot returns
to take off a handy 7 lb here.
12 WEST BALBOA (IRE) (91) 96
12-21 7 11-2 | 70.8kg
Dan Skelton
Harry Skelton
Low-mileage mare who is clearly well regarded, runner-up in Grade 1 Challow
on just her second start last winter. Improved again this term, second on return/
handicap debut at Sandown and career-best effort to land 20-runner Lanzarote
Hurdle (21f) in January. Big player with more to come upped to 3m.
13 OUTLAW PETER (IRE) (28) t 97
4-121P211 7 11-2 | 70.8kg
Paul Nicholls
Harry Cobden
Improving 7-y-o who is compiling a good strike rate over hurdles, running out
a convincing winner from 5 lb lower mark at Kempton (21f) in March. Feasible
to think he hasn’t finished improving yet and he remains unexposed at this sort
of trip. Respected.
14 AU FLEURON (FR) (29) b 98
12378-048 6 11-1 | 70.3kg
Gordon Elliott, Ireland
Kieren Buckley (3lb/1kg)
Bumper/maiden hurdle winner during 2021 who has shaped as if ready for a
crack at this sort of trip in recent starts, passing beaten rivals when eighth in
last month’s Martin Pipe (20.2f) at the Festival. Interesting connections reach for
blinkers here, which could put an extra edge on him.
15 POUNDING POET (IRE) (107) s 97
2270-1416 7 11-0 | 69.9kg
Tom Lacey
Robert Dunne
Got back on the up in the autumn, proving most determined on the back of 4
months off when landing 4-runner Uttoxeter handicap (23.3f) in October. Latest
Doncaster run in December was disappointing and whilst he’s gone well fresh
he was well held in this race 12 months ago. Cheekpieces reached for.
16 GAELIK COAST (FR) (69) t 97
519382F6 9 10-12 | 68.9kg
Donald McCain
Theo Gillard
Useful winning chaser and in good form back hurdling this season, winning
at Worcester in June and back to his best when runner-up at Doncaster (19.5f,
good) in December. Below par both subsequent starts, though, and he may well
come up short again here.
17 DALLAS DES PICTONS (FR) (27) 92
21627P93 10 10-10 | 68.0kg
Dianne Sayer
Brian Hughes
Useful hurdler/chaser who ended a long losing run in 3m Cork handicap hurdle
on final start for Gordon Elliott in August. Good second back chasing for his new
yard at Carlisle in October but disappointing over both sets of obstacles since.
18 MEXICO (GER) (14) 96
4-3214381 7 10-10 | 68.0kg
Stuart Edmunds
Ciaran Gethings
Bumper winner who opened his account over hurdles in a Southwell novice
(2½m) in December. Found some improvement for increase in trip when
successful at Uttoxeter (23.3f) 2 weeks ago and whilst this demands more back
in a handicap, he’s still unexposed at around 3m. Yard won this 2 years ago.
19 MOON HUNTER (29) (BF) 97
11P2
6 10-10 | 68.0kg
Henry Daly
Richard Patrick
Winning pointer who landed first 2 starts over hurdles and left Warwick Grade 2
disappointment in his wake when chasing home Henry’s Friend in a Doncaster
novice 919.4f) 4 weeks ago. 4 lb better off with that rival now switched to
handicaps and he promises to be suited by this longer trip.
20 HENRY’S FRIEND (IRE) (29) (C) t 98
13241 6 10-9 | 67.6kg
Ben Pauling
Kielan Woods
Landed a course novice (at 20f) on debut back in May and improved during the
winter, runner-up in Sandown Grade 2 in December. Below best at Newcastle
(20.3f) in January but quickly back to form when taking 8-runner Doncaster
novice (19.4f) 4 weeks ago. May do better now handicapping at 3m.
Well served by emphasis on stamina when doubling career tally in a Cork
novice (2m) in January. Backed that up with a keeping on third in a 20f novice at
Punchestown later that month but return to this longer trip needs to bring about
further improvement in race of this nature.
Tasted success 3 times during 2020/21 but absent 22 months and that told late
on when last of 8 in a Newbury handicap (3m) back in February. Eased 1 lb on
the back of that but others understandably arrive with more compelling claims.
TIMEFORM VIEW:
Claims can be made for plenty with the narrow vote in favour of WEST BALBOA. Clearly
held in high regard, she produced her best effort yet when landing the Lanzarote
Hurdle at Kempton in January, and wisely given a break since, there’s a strong possibility
she can do better still now her stamina is drawn out further. Good Time Jonny produced
a smashing effort to land the Pertemps last month and is feared. An Tailliur, Au Fleuron
and last year’s winner Party Business complete the shortlist.
Hasn’t always looked the most fluent but clearly possesses plenty of ability,
obstacles. Retains potential but no margin for error in this company.
Useful in bumpers without looking totally straightforward and got the mark over
hurdles at second attempt in 2m Kempton novice in November. Disappointed in
the Tolworth but combination of a wind op and a tongue tie enabled him to get
back on track in no uncertain terms when winning handicap latest.
Fair form in bumpers and won first 2 starts over hurdles, including in listed
company. Took his form up a notch when fourth in Grade 1 Nathaniel Lacy &
Partners Solicitors Novices’ Hurdle at Leopardstown but he failed badly to meet
market expectations in the Martin Pipe.
Impressed when winning 2 bumpers last season. Wasn’t foot perfect but class
got him through on hurdles debut at Ascot. Disappointing when pulled up in
the Challow at Newbury over Christmas but straight back on track with a tongue
tie fitted when winning a novice/valuable handicap in recent weeks.
5 DARK RAVEN (IRE) (32) 100
11/136 6 11-7 | 73.0kg
W. P. Mullins, Ireland P. Townend
Looked a top prospect when winning both bumpers in 2021. Off the track a
while after but expertly prepared to make a winning hurdles debut in December
and better form in defeat after, third in the Grade 1 Brave Inca before finishing
sixth in the Supreme. Just about sets the standard up in trip.
6 HALLWOOD (FR) (54) t 78
Different proposition on the back of a wind op when making second hurdles
suggests this trip will suit but this is a huge ask.
Successful on second of 2 starts in Irish points and coped very well with a trulyrun
race as he made it 3-3 in this sphere with a scintillating performance in the
Challow at Newbury (20.5f, soft) in December. That form has stood up well but
Davy Russell
Winner of a warm French bumper and landed the odds without too much fuss
on hurdles debut at Cork in November. Smart form when runner-up next 2 starts
and made most of big drop in class at Naas last month. Should have more to
offer over this sort of trip.
Gavin Patrick Cromwell, Ireland
Keith Donoghue
Talented triple-bumper winner who made the most of a big drop in grade when
landing the odds in maiden company at Punchestown in January (24.5f). Ran a
belter when fourth in The Albert Bartlett and way he travelled that day suggests
drop in trip won’t be a problem.
Michael Scudamore
Luca Morgan
Won his first 2 starts this term and got back on track when third of 10 in Grade
2 at Cheltenham (20.2f) in January. That level well shy of what’s required here,
though. Engaged 4.40 Aintree Friday.
Jonjo O’Neill Jr.
Smart bumper performer in 2021 and looks every bit as good over hurdles,
completing a simple task with the minium of fuss at Wetherby 3 weeks ago. Limit
not yet reached and well worth a shot at this level.
Nigel Twiston-Davies
Sam Twiston-Davies
Plenty about him physically and strong at the finish when landing 12-runner
maiden hurdle at Warwick 3 weeks ago. Trip should be within range but
dominating this field a different undertaking.
Dan Skelton
Harry Skelton
Fairly useful in bumpers and improved a chunk in all 3 hurdles outings against
her own sex, completing the hat-trick with the minium of fuss at Market Rasen
in February. Given a short break and isn’t one to underestimate despite big jump
in class.
Gavin Sheehan
Bumper winner who is developing a superb record over hurdles, sole defeat
coming at the hands of Hermes Allen and she travelled with notable zest in the
Dawn Run. Genuine and likeable mare who is a danger to all back up in distance.
TIMEFORM VIEW:
This is very open and while SPRINGWELL BAY hasn’t quite achieved as much as some of
these, he’s a smashing prospect with the obvious scope to rate higher. He can take the
step up in grade in his stride at the chief expense of Dark Raven and You Wear It Well,
though Hermes Allen is also very dangerous if back to the level he attained in the
JRL GROUP LIVERPOOL HURDLE (Grade 1) (1) 4yo+
£250,000 3m149y (4960 Metres)
Going: Good to Soft
The Grand National course is triangular with its apex (at the Canal Turn) the furthest
point from the stands. Inside is the Mildmay course which has birch fences. A major
feature of the Mildmay course is its sharpness, though the fences are stiff and it’s a
tough jumping test. The Grand National is run over two complete circuits taking in
sixteen spruce fences first time around and fourteen the second. Alterations to the
fences in recent times have had the effect of making it a less severe test of jumping
than used to be case. Since 2013, the run to the first fence in the Grand National
was reduced in a bid to also improve safety, resulting in the overall race distance
shortening from the usual 4½m, though the run-in is still 494 yards long and includes
an elbow.
Aidan Coleman
Very smart hurdler who returned from wind surgery to land a second win in the
Grade 2 National Spirit at Fontwell (19f) in February. His record suggests he’ll be
vulnerable back at highest level, though. Also has stamina to prove.
Jonjo O’Neill Jr.
Very talented hurdler/chaser who dug deep to fend off Paisley Park in 3m
Newbury Grade 2 hurdle on his reappearance. Not in quite the same form when
4¾ lengths third to Paisley Park in Kempton Grade 1 over Christmas. Freshened
up since. Third in this last year. Capable of going well.
Tough and likeable sort who resumed with a 2½m hurdle win here in November.
Good runner-up efforts on all 4 starts since, going down by ¾ length to Sire Du
Dual Stayers’ Hurdle winner at Cheltenham. Couldn’t complete a hat-trick of wins
Gained a breakthrough win at Grade 1 level at Leopardstown over Christmas. Did
very well under the circumstances when 3¾ lengths fifth of 11 to Sire Du Berlais
Won a Grade 1 juvenile hurdle at this meeting in 2021 and second in Aintree
record makes him a dangerous one to discount but he does have stamina to
prove stepping up in trip. Tongue tie and cheekpieces on for first time.
but she’s not the type to stay down for long. First attempt at 3m.
HOME BY THE LEE shaped a lot better than the result when behind a couple of these in
the Stayers’ at Cheltenham and is taken to turn the tables and notch a second Grade 1
win of the season. Champ has been freshened up since his run at Kempton over
Christmas and is a very talented operator on his day so he’s second choice ahead of
Very smart but his limitations have been exposed at the highest level, remote
Useful novice hurdler who gained second chase success at Stratford and
stepped up again when gamely landing Cheltenham handicap on New Year’s
Day. Failed to meet expectations in Magners Plate at the Festival since but very
much the type to bounce back. Tongue strap on. Stamina slight concern.
Gary Moore
Jamie Moore
Had a good first season over fences, taking Newbury Grade 2 and ending
campaign with success at Fontwell. Easily best effort this term when excellent
third (in this headgear) at Cheltenham (20.6f) on New Year’s Day. Let down by
jumping in Ultima at the Festival since but well worth another chance.
4 GOLD CUP BAILLY (FR) (34) t 98
32/3-11124 7 10-13 | 69.4kg
Stuart Crawford, Ireland
Daryl Jacob
Useful chaser who won first 3 starts this season, including 2 small-field handicaps
at Ayr. Good second there next time but well held upped in class (Grade 3) at
Naas. This more suitable and remains low mileage.
5 BEAUPORT (IRE) (30) 98
2214-1249 7 10-12 | 68.9kg
Nigel Twiston-Davies
Jordan Nailor
Likeable, progressive hurdler who made fine start over fences when landing
listed Colin Parker Chase at Carlisle on return. Yet to build on that but shaped
better than the distance beaten suggests in Kim Muir at Cheltenham Festival last
month, travelling better than most for a long way (lost shoe).
6 KARL PHILIPPE (FR) (32) 97
J. Hogan (5lb/2kg)
Resumed with 2m 4f win at Wetherby in November and backed it up off 7 lb
higher mark when second in handicap there on Boxing Day. However, seemed to
find the jump to top-level handicaps a bit too much at Cheltenham last 2 starts.
Proved better than ever (tongue tied) when making winning return at Exeter and
shaped well when fifth behind Midnight River at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day,
possibly making move sooner than ideal. Finished in front of that one when third
in Magners Plate at the Festival. One to consider up in trip.
Jonathan England
Off mark over hurdles on final start last season and has made a very good start
to his chase career, winning first 5 starts, including 4-runner handicap in October.
Well held in Grade 2 at Ascot after 4 months off but remains of interest back in a
handicap. Tongue strap on 1st time.
Ended last season on the up over fences, scoring at Doncaster and Wetherby.
Excuses first 2 starts this term before resuming winning ways at Sandown,
making most. Not in same form in Grimthorpe at Doncaster since but did make
a bad mistake at the first.
Likeable mare who made a winning reappearance last season before following
up at Hereford. All the better for return this time when good third in handicap at
Wincanton and similar form when third of 5 in listed chase at Exeter soon after.
Should run her race again.
TIMEFORM VIEW:
SHAKEM UP’ARRY has really impressed with how he’s travelled since the tongue strap
was fitted, producing another cracking effort when third in the Magners Plate at the
Cheltenham Festival, and he may just get away with the longer trip at this flatter track.
Midnight River and Nassalam failed to meet expectations in the same race at
Cheltenham but both are likely to bounce back given their profiles, while Beauport will
be suited by the drop back in trip given how he shaped in the Kim Muir.
Very smart on his day but hard to catch right. His third to Galopin des Champs
Big improver in the autumn, winning a couple of valuable 3m handicap chases
12 months earlier. It was a big effort from him from 1 lb higher in 2022 having
made early mistakes and he’ll be sharper this time. Big player.
Won the preceding handicap on this card 12 months ago and was a good third
in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby on his return. Quiet since but has likely had this as
his target (should stay long distances). Has had a breathing operation.
Good jumper who took pretty well to these fences in the Grand Sefton in
November before chasing home The Big Dog in the Troytown at Navan. Well
held since (over hurdles latest) and is a doubtful stayer. Others preferred.
Very lightly raced for an 11-y-o but better than ever back from 33 months off this
term, relishing the slog through the Gowran mud as he edged out Dunboyne in
the Thyestes in January. Better than the result at Fairyhouse since but wouldn’t
be sure to take to these fences. Excellent young rider up.
Gordon Elliott-trained grey who led for a long way in the Thyestes won
by Carefully Selected before scoring himself for the first time in 2 years at
Punchestown 8 weeks ago. Didn’t get home in the 2021 Irish National or in this
Warmed up nicely for a second crack at this when returning to winning ways
at Down Royal last month, beating Roi Mage. Took to the course really well last
year but finished held in sixth having proved far too keen. Same mark and will
clearly need to settle better.
Very smart grey who was third in last year’s Irish National and proved all stamina
when landing the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham last month. Not always
fluent there though and did have quite a hard race. 1 of 4 for Willie Mullins (won
this just once, in 2005).
Has improved further for new yard this term, winning hot Newbury handicap
chase in November (Corach Rambler fourth) and shaping best in second on first
run since at Kelso 6 weeks ago, sent for home earlier than ideal. Had a hard race
there but is very much the type who’ll take well to this test.
Very smart staying chaser on his day but is a weak finisher, running a tame race
Smart novice chaser in 2020/21 but firmly back on track this term with good
seconds in valuable Haydock handicap and the Welsh National, jumping a lot
better than usual at Chepstow. Never got going in the Ultima at Cheltenham but
might have needed it after 11 weeks off. Stronger headgear goes on.
Smart chaser at best and took a step back in the right direction on second start
TIMEFORM VIEW:
DELTA WORK can give Gordon Elliott a fourth Grand National victory. He’s been
extremely strong at the finish when winning the Cross Country Chase for the last 2
years, the same race Tiger Roll landed before taking this in 2018 and 2019 for connections,
and he gave a great account of himself when third off 1 lb higher 12 months ago.
Corach Rambler is another dual Cheltenham Festival winner who ticks plenty of boxes
for the 2017-winning yard. Le Milos and Vanillier complete the shortlist.
Since 2013, the run to the first fence in the Grand National
was reduced in a bid to also improve safety, resulting in the overall race distance
shortening from the usual 4½m, though the run-in is still 494 yards long and includes
an elbow.
Gordon Elliott, Ireland
L. P. Dempsey
From a good NH family and justified favouritism in good style on debut at Naas
last month. Entitled to improve for top yard but this is a whole different test.
20 SHINJI (IRE) (63) h 91
Martin Keighley
Sean Bowen
Proved a class apart in Fakenham bumper for Roger Varian (subsequently
sold £60,000) in November. Ran well but looked headstrong in listed event at
Newbury last month and hood goes on now. Plenty to find.
TIMEFORM VIEW:
CENTARA tanked through the race when making a successful start at Taunton recently
and he could find sufficient improvement to maintain his unbeaten record up in grade.
Captain Cody is an obvious player after his excellent sixth in the Champion Bumper,
while his stablemate Blizzard of Oz is one of several others with feasible claims in an
open-looking renewal.
