There’s a big field for this competitive Grade 2 fillies
and mares’ sprint. On the form of a recent meeting,
#1 KWINTA’S LIGHT, #2 THREE ROCKS, #3 OCTOBER
MORN, #6 KISS ME CAPTAIN and #8 SHANTASTIC
are closely matched so must all be included.
Stablemates #15 GOLDEN HOSTESS and #12 WINTER
CLOUD, as well as #11 RASCOVA and #10 DOUBLE
GRAND SLAM, are others worth considering.
LEG 2 (RACE 5) – G2 ANTHONIJ
RUPERT WINE PREMIER TROPHY
Last-chance saloon for a number of runners who
harbour ambitions of running in this year’s WSB
Cape Town Met. #4 AT MY COMMAND copped a
hefty penalty for finishing 2nd in the Grade 3 Green
Point Stakes, but a repeat of that effort on favourable
weight terms will make him hard to beat. #5 PACAYA
and upwardly mobile stablemate #6 MUCHO DINERO
are those most likely to pose a threat. Those with
bigger budgets may want to include #7 SUGAR
MOUNTAIN and #8 WATERBERRY LANE.
LEG 3 (RACE 6) – G1 CARTIER
PADDOCK STAKES
A small but competitive field for this year’s renewal
of the sought-after Paddock Stakes trophy. Given
the conditions, the race looks at the mercy of Equus
Horse Of The Year #3 PRINCESS CALLA, who is the
best-weighted runner. She is, undoubtedly, the one
to beat as she reverts to taking on her own sex. #2
RED PALACE, runner-up in the Grade 1 Cape Guineas
against male rivals, and stablemate #4 BEACH
BOMB, winner of the Grade 1 Cape Fillies Guineas,
appear her only dangers in a small field.
LEG 4 (RACE 7) – G1 L’ORMARINS
KING’S PLATE
A stellar line-up for this prestigious event, won
last year by outsider #12 AL MUTHANA
who is back to defend his crown. But on the
evidence of recent displays, he is unlikely to
catch the eye of the judge this time. #7 CHARLES
DICKENS, runner-up in this race last year, has a good
chance of making amends as a stronger and more
mature four-year-old, but he had his colours lowered
by #4 SEE IT AGAIN in the Grade 2 Green Point
Stakes over the course and distance. His conqueror
could confirm his superiority and continue his bid to
complete the Green Point-King’s Plate-Met treble - a
feat achieved twice by the legendary Pocket Power.
Grade 1 Cape Guineas winner #2 SNOW PILOT and
fellow three-year-old stablemate #10 HLUHLUWE are
the only potential dangers to the top two.
LEG 5 (RACE 8) – CLASS 3 JET DARK
STAKES
#1 USA’S HOPE, #9 STREET OUTLAW and #13
DOUBLE CHARGE all have claims on recent form,
so must be included with last-start winners #10 CAFE
CULTURE and #16 FUTURE VARIETY. Both #14 ICY BLAST
and #15 GIMMELIGHTNING are consistent three-year-old
geldings, who ought to be competitive judged on their
recent displays.
LEG 6 (RACE 9) – G3 GLORIOUS
GOODWOOD CHAIRMANS CUP
#1 TRIPLE TIME, #3 SENSO UNICO and #12
OTTO LUYKEN are worth considering for larger
permutations, but are held on the form of a recent
clash by both #5 FUTURE SWING and #9 NEBRAAS.
The latter’s fellow Highveld raider #8 ARAGOSTA
made a winning Cape summer introduction over the
same course and distance and is good value to follow
up, so is a must for all bets. #10 ONE WAY TRAFFIC and
#4 HAN SOLO are also high on the shortlist of possible
winners.
