CLASSICAL SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUEresides in the Davenport, IA area where heis the Tuba and Euphonium instructor atAugustana College and St. Ambrose University.GOLDEN LUND, TUBAGolden Lund began his tenure as principaltubist with the LSO in 2009, when he beganhis doctoral program studying tuba withCraig Fuller. He has three degrees in tubaperformance: a Bachelors of Music from theUniversity of Utah, a Masters of Music fromIndiana University, and a Doctor of Musical Artsfrom the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Dr.Lund’s extensive musical training has involvedstudying with some of finest tuba performersand teachers in the world including DanielPerantoni, Warren Deck, and Gary Ofenloch.In addition to his work with the LSO, Lund hasalso been employed as acting principal for theLouisiana Philharmonic, Rexburg TabernacleOrchestra, and Quad Cities SymphonyOrchestra. He has performed as substitutewith the Utah Symphony, Orchestra at TempleSquare, Omaha Symphony Orchestra, DesMoines Symphony, and Sioux City Symphony.His solo career includes performances withthe Augustana Symphonic Band, AugustanaBrass Choir, BYU-Idaho Brass Choir, and theUniversity of Utah Wind Ensemble. GoldenNotes on the ProgramAcademic Festival OvertureJohannes Brahms (1833-1897)In 1879 Johannes Brahms learned that theUniversity of Breslau wished to confer upon himan honorary doctorate. Brahms despised thefuss and veneration that came along with hiscelebrity status, so he acknowledged the honorby sending a simple thank you card. BernhardScholz, the director of music in Breslau as wellas Brahms’ nominator, immediately informedthe composer the university expected him tonot only attend the ceremony, but also makea grand musical gesture in thanks. “Composea fine symphony for us!” he wrote in a letter toBrahms, “But well-orchestrated, old boy, nottoo uniformly thick!”Brahms obliged – but not without hischaracteristic ironic wit. In lieu of the expectedsober and ceremonial work, the AcademicFestival Overture takes the form of an amusingparody of scholastic splendor, serving up“academia” with a large side of cheek.The piece’s humor lies in the contrast ofthe grandeur of Brahms’ style – masterfulcounterpoint, sophisticated orchestration, andhuge instrumental forces – with the inclusionof four rowdy beer-hall tunes popular withstudents of the time (imagine attending aformal symphonic concert only to hear abrilliantly orchestrated, straight-laced renditionof “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall” and youwill perhaps come close to understanding theoverture’s subtle shock value).LSO THANKS TONIGHT'S CONCERT SPONSORThe Nebraska Lottery is proud to be a sponsorof Lincoln's Symphony Orchestra.
