INTRODUCTION
This compilation of references to the terrestrial arthropods of Fiji includes over 2700
citations and covers terrestrial and freshwater Fijian arthropods, marine insects
(excluding terrestrial amphipods and isopods). All printed literature referring to Fijian
taxa from the family level down to species level, including the “gray literature” [reports
and proceedings often written at the behest of government agencies] is presented. It also
includes the literature associated with the original descriptions of taxa recorded from
Fiji, whether these taxa are native or introduced. These last citations should allow
readers to associate the original literature associated with the taxa listed by author, date,
and page in the checklists (found in Bishop Museum Technical Report 35).
This bibliography is a first draft and is not quite complete. However, it contains all the
primary literature (papers treating Fijian taxa in the title or containing original
descriptions of taxa occurring in Fiji) and a vast number of secondary references (i.e.,
those articles that treat non-Fijian groups but mention Fijian taxa in comparison or those
treatments of widely distributed taxa that include Fijian taxa). The latter group is not
often listed exhaustively in treatments like this because of the vagaries of the search
parameters used and search algorithms that are used online. If online searches are not
possible, a diligent and time-consuming read through each article is often necessary to
find references to Fijian taxa.
Compilation of the bibliography derived primarily from the foundation of the Pacific
Island Arthropod card index possessed in the Natural Sciences Department at Bishop
Museum. This card file was kept up-to-date only until about the early 1940s and then
sporadically after that. References were added to this nucleus from checking the Fijian
references listed in Zoological Record for each year subsequent to 1935. Online
resources were used to add references from 1970 on. Useful online searching was
conducted using the robust search features of Google including Google Scholar by
typing the terms “Fiji” and each order or class listed in the checklists. Verification of
resulting hits were conducted by downloading available pdf files or documents and
searching on “Fiji” to check that the articles indeed contained references to Fijian
terrestrial arthropods.
Readers are encouraged to supply the compiler with corrections or additions to this
bibliography. The bibliography will continue to be augmented. Vetted and updated
versions will be periodically posted on the Fiji Arthropod Survey website:
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I think the numerous authors who supplied me with reprints of their works and
corrections to citations. Emmett Easton and Alistair Ramsdale helped with some of the
compilation of references. Lucius Eldredge proofread the draft of this paper. Thanks to
the Fiji Ministries of Environment and Forestry, the National Science Foundation, and
the Schinger Foundation for support of the project.
