Picture: SUPPLIEDWinning BOM TalentSearch artists announcedFAITH MTWANAThe winning artists in the Battleof Municipalities (BOM) TalentSearch have been announced,with their paintings displayed atthe Ann Bryant Art Gallery untilOctober 22.The two main categorieswere painting and mixed art;and pencil and charcoald raw i n g s .Lutho Mgijima and JennaWheatley were awarded the firstand second prizes respectivelyfor the painting/mixed artcategories.Khangelani Makasi receivedfirst prize in the pencil/charcoalcategory, and Beverley Bauerthe second prize.The talent search served asan opportunity for artists toexpress and re-imagine a bettersociety free of the present social,political, environmental andeconomic struggles.The central theme was hope– as an embodiment of whatBOM stands for and envisionsfor the future.Event organiser SydneyQoqonga said the event wassignificant because it gave artiststhe chance to share theirperspectives and help bring newviews on many societal issues.“The Eastern Cape is veryrich in creative arts and there isa lot of talent that needs to benourished and supported.“We need manystakeholders, government andthe private sector to come onboard and help take the creativespace further,” said Qoqonga.“I strongly believe c r e a t iveartists will be the ones who willbring change to many societalissues that we face today byaddressing them through theirart. What does yourjob entail?AIt is a dream come true. I’vealways imagined myselfworking alongside the lateAkhumzi Jezile and Dr MusaMthombeni.My job is reviewing shows,finding creative ways to makethem better, relevant andrelatable to South Africans.I revamp shows and comeup with new concepts that wecan pitch to channels, not justSABC but streaming platformsincluding Netflix and Amazon.What did you study? How hasthis helped in your career?I studied a Bachelor of VisualArts, which doesn’t haveanything to do with television.It did, however, prepare mycreative eye. Every chance I gotinbetween classes I’d go to themedia department at NelsonMandela University. I knewwhat I wanted and always wa n tmore in life. I practically taughtmyself a lot about television.What are some of thechallenges you faced?The only challenge I ever hadwas being the only one whobelieves in my dream. Iremember being unemployedand thinking about how uselessmy qualification was.GO! PEOPLELunga NgcabasheI had to be proactive, andfind creative ways of making itwork. I didn’t have a cent, butbeing home in the rural areas ofTsomo in Transkei, my youthprojects kept me going.The young people in mycommunity helped me keep myfire burning throughout the twoyears of idling with no income.What advice would you give tosomeone facing this struggle?Many young people send meDMs looking to be mentored.I’ve always believed in myself,and my goal was clear.I want to say, young people,you are not lazy, just try yourbest. Applying [for jobs] everyday isn’t enough.I’ve been depressed but Ifound innovative ways to keepbusy. Find your passion, baseyour life around that and keepmoving towards your dreams.Which of the awards yo u ’vereceived mean the most to you?The awards were justrecognition of the work by myyouth. If it was for me, an awardmust come with R1m to changethe circumstances of youngpeople from rural areas. I amgrateful for the awards but I justwant to be impactful in society.We need resources, and ifgovernment reduced the redtape, we’d get the boost needed.You worked as actress LusandaMbane’s personal assistant,what did you learn from this?Working for a celebrity waseverything one can dream of. Ilearnt so much from the ladyabout hard work.Every minute of every dayshe is thinking of ways to bringmoney in. I’ve seen her do fivethings at once; the hecticschedule, travelling, businesses,TV sets. I think our energiesconnected instantly because ofthe drive and determination.What practical advice can youshare with unemployedgraduates to keep motivated?As an unemployed graduate, Iwoke up every day to jog. Imeditated on the word of God alot. I am a firm believer of Christand I am a spiritual being , sopraying is the most importantpart of my journey. However,faith without action is dead, sowork towards that goal. I suggestyou volunteer, be present andaware of where you want to be.Future career goals?Netflix is definitely where youwill see my name.
