THE REPRESENTATIVE 28 October 2022 Tel: (045) 839-4040 / editorial: bobeloz@therep.co.za / advertising: charodinev@therep.co.za 9Scenic Bonkolo Marathon returnsFor two years, fervent supportersand athletes who took part in theiconic Twizza Bonkolo Marathonhad to accept that the sceniclong-distance race had to behalted indefinitely due to theCovid-19 pandemic.Finally, with the lockdownrestrictions lifted, the race is setto return and excitement isbrewing among its avidsupporters.The big event, scheduled forNovember 5, will see runnersfrom all over the Eastern Capeand further afield arriving inKomani to take on the race’sscenic route, with some of the“friendliest” water pointsprovided in SA’s road runningc a l e n d a r.In 2020, a group of runnersdecided to hit the tracks in whatthey called an unofficial TwizzaBonkolo Marathon after learningthe race was cancelled due toCovid-19.Thirty six runners fromdifferent clubs ran what is thetraditional 21.1km of the route inhomage to the race.This year, in a bigger andmuch better setting, the teamhas set up a new route forrunners to experience, starting at5am at College Avenue andfinishing at the Bonkolo Dam asper tradition.Renet Wentzel, treasurer ofthe Queenstown Harriers club,which used to organise the race,said they were hoping to get 300entries this year.“There is a lot of excitementand we are hoping for lots ofentries. We are excited this ishappening again in Komani, thisis a big occurrence for us and weare hoping to also grow theHarriers club numbers.“We have a list of sponsors,Twizza being the major sponsors,and we want to thank everyonefor ensuring that this event takesplace,” said Wentzel.“It is a very nice route andthere is just one hectic incline,which is at the Bonkolo Dam.“Runners need to pacethemselves and rest well threedays before,” she added.Twizza executive personalassistant Lucy Lyons said: “Tw i z z ais excited to be on board with thesponsoring of the 2022 BonkoloMarathon.“It has been a long break afterCovid-19 and runners are keen toget out there and competeagain.”Lyons highlighted that theywere excited about the change inthe route and were hopeful thatrunners would enjoy the “tour”through Komani.“The marathon is a chance forthe community to be involvedacross the board, with bed andbreakfast establishments andrestaurants being able to benefitfrom the runners who are in ourtown.“The event will still be asexciting as ever and we are reallylooking forward to hostingeveryone and hope they all havea magnificent run.“Good luck to each andeveryone who has entered.
