UNITED WAY OF MONMOUTH AND OCEAN COUNTIESIN THE “SPEAR-IT” TO CELEBRATE!Students in Project SPEAR-IT are exposed to a variety ofskills, including electric, woodworking and even plumbing.Over the past three years, attendance rates for the programhave been even stronger than expected, especially withstudents eager to get back into the classroom this pastschool year after over a year of distance learning. Eventhroughout the pandemic, the program’s virtual classeshad a 98-percent attendance rate and kept studentsengaged.Representatives from United Way of Monmouth and Ocean Countiesgathered with Toms River Regional students, administrators and boardmembers at High School South on in celebration of Project SPEAR-ITand the completion of the lifeguard stand project for Ortley Beach.UWMOC and Toms River Regional Schools have formeda partnership to create a pre-vocational program that’smaking a big impact on high school students and thecommunity.Project SPEAR-IT (South’s Pre-Vocational EducationalAlternatives Resource Institute) was founded in 2019 atToms River High School South as part of a grant fromUWMOC’s Youth Vocational Pathways initiative. Theprogram is based on a growing need and interest in publicschools for authentic career and technical education(CTE) experiences. It is especially beneficial for at-riskstudents who often disqualify themselves from vocationalprograms before they even get to their sophomore andjunior years.The students’ learning experience throughout the schoolyear was demonstrated through a capstone project wherethey put their skills to the test to build nine lifeguardstands for Ortley Beach. Students, administrators, boardmembers, and representatives from United Way ofMonmouth and Ocean Counties gathered at High SchoolSouth on May 12, 2022 in celebration of Project SPEAR-IT and to see the culmination of the students’ hard work.UWMOC representatives helped students affix co-brandednameplates to the lifeguard stands, which Ortley Beachwas able to put to use this past summer.“Partnering with United Way has been a dream for Toms RiverHigh School South,” said Superintendent Mike Citta, whochampioned the program as the high school’s former principal.“The support, resources and guidance that have been providedto our students and staff has been immeasurable. UNITED WAY DONATES VAN TO GIRL SCOUTSIn May 2021, UWMOC recieved a generous donation of twovans through the “CauseWheels” Vehicle Donation Programby The Causeway Family of Dealerships in Manahawkin.FALL 2022 NEWSLETTERThis act of kindness allowed United Way to pay it forwardand donate our old van to be refurbished by The CausewayFamily of Dealerships to be given to The Girl Scouts of theJersey Shore (GSJS).
