First Team Assistant Coach Richard Kitzbichler has also left the club. Hasenhüttl, who was appointed in December 2018, departs having made a significant contribution to the club, overseeing some memorable results and also playing a key role in the development of our club infrastructure, identity and playing squad. However, we now believe it is an appropriate time to make a change. Everyone involved with the club would like to express their sincere thanks to Ralph for all of his efforts, as well as the unwavering commitment he has shown throughout his time as manager. First Team Lead Coach Rubén Sellés will take charge of the side on an interim basis for our game tonight. The club will be announcing a permanent replacement in due course. Southampton youngsters Jimmy- Jay Morgan, Tyler Dibling, and Jayden Meghoma all shone on the international stage as England advanced in their UEFA European Under-17s Championship qualifying. In Group 3, England saw off Lithuania and Georgia whilst drawing with Israel to top the table and advance to the elite round, with the Southampton trio playing a key part in each game. Dibling scored his first goals at under-17s level with a brace against Georgia, whilst Morgan found the net three times during the group stage. Defender Jayden Meghoma started two of the three matches for the young Lions, who are now one more round of qualifying away from reaching the 2023 UEFA European Under-17 Championships in Hungary next summer. Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce Ecowatt as the club’s Official Training Kit Partner for the remainder of the 2022/2023 season. Ecowatt will be on the Men’s First Team, B Team and Women’s First Team training kits, and was worn for the first time for Sunday’s Premier League match against Newcastle United. Ecowatt buys and builds renewable power stations to expand the supply rapidly, whilst simultaneously funding projects that are key drivers in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Southampton Football Club is on a mission to be Carbon Neutral by 2030. The club was recently shortlisted for the inaugural BBC Sports Green Awards for the work they have been doing around their sustainability strategy, ‘The Halo Effect’, which saw them rise from 18th to 3rd in the Sports Positive Premier League sustainability table. David Hirst arrived at Southampton from Sheffield Wednesday on 17th October 1997 after spending 11 seasons playing for the Owls, prior to which he played for Barnsley. In his time at Sheffield Wednesday he notched up nearly 300 appearances and scored 106 goals. Known as a strong and pacey striker, he was top scorer for the Owls in 1991 when they were promoted back to the old First Division. That season they also won the Rumbelows League Cup when they defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the final, the goal scored by future Southampton manager Nigel Pearson. David was voted into the PFA’s divisional Team of the Year for 1990/91. His third cap followed in February 1992 against France at Wembley when he replaced the injured Gary Lineker. David’s career was plagued by injuries, including a broken ankle, but he fought his way back into the Wednesday side until it was reported – early in the 1997/98 season – that he was not getting on well with his manager David Pleat, and he made the move to the south coast. He has said that manager Dave Jones was the reason he came to Southampton. Following relegation from the top table in 1999/00, the Owls dropped into the third tier three years later but returned via the Play-Offs at the first time of asking. They were back in League One for two seasons in 2010/11 and 2011/12 and returned again two years ago despite a late revival under Darren Moore following his appointment towards the end of the campaign. Moore led Wednesday to the Play-Pffs last term, but they were beaten at the semi-final stage by Sunderland, who also triumphed at Wembley. David would go on to have successful partnerships up front with Kevin Davies and later with Egil Østenstad. In 1997/98 David made 28 league appearances and scored nine times, helping the Saints to an 11th place finish in the Premier League. After being on the losing side on his debut against Blackburn Rovers, a number of happier highlights would follow and make him a hit with Saints fans. A week after his first start, on 25th October, he delighted us all by scoring twice in a 3-2 home win against Tottenham Hotspur; his second was a thunderous shot from 12 yards. A further week later he was again on the winning side in a 2-0 victory at Everton. Then, on 8th November, he was far from restrained when he scored the fourth goal, having been set up by Matt Le Tissier, in a 4-1 win against his first club Barnsley. (That’s right: for younger readers Barnsley were actually in the Premier League.) At Anfield on 7th February 1998 the Saints beat Liverpool even more so. One of the favourites to go straight up this season, the Owls have started the new campaign well and sit in third spot at the time of writing, three points off second-placed Ipswich Town. Moore bolstered his squad in the summer with the signing of Will Vaulks from Cardiff City, while also raiding neighbours Rotherham United for Michaels Ihiekwe and Smith. Further experience was snapped up in the shape of former Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale, who arrived on a free transfer from Wycombe Wanderers. The Owls reached this stage of the Carabao Cup thanks to home victories over Sunderland and Rochdale. David’s first was a penalty and his second came from a pass by Østenstad. In another away win in February, David scored the only goal that beat Leeds United at Elland Road. It was a tap-in from an excellent cross from – guess who? – Egil Østenstad. Sadly, David’s injury problems emerged again before the start of 1998/99 when he injured his knee during a preseason run. He was therefore limited to two substitute appearances in April 1999 and eventually, in January 2000, he followed medical advice and retired from playing. Although David only played 32 times for the Saints he had an impact on both the side and the supporters. I recall one fan saying to me at the time: “Hirst gets involved in everything.” I wonder what he might have helped us to achieve if he had remained free of injury. Often called one of the nicest man in football, Darren Moore left his post at Doncaster Rovers to take over at Sheffield Wednesday in March 2021. The Owls sat 23rd in the Championship and Moore was unable to save them from the drop, but has been entrusted with taking Wednesday back to the second tier. A defender in his playing days, Moore spent time at Torquay United, Doncaster, Bradford City, Portsmouth, West Bromwich Albion, Derby County, Barnsley and Burton Albion. He took over as West Brom boss, initially on a caretaker basis, when they were in the Premier League in April 2018. He couldn’t save the club from relegation and was sacked in March 2019, when they were fourth in the Championship. He was named Doncaster boss the following summer. Born in Birmingham, Moore was capped twice for Jamaica. Ten-year record: one to watch: MIDFIELDER / AGE: 32 – a role much suited to his natural forthright attitude. In April 2017 he severed links with Sheffield Wednesday due to the way they were treating his son George, who went to Belgian side Oud-Heverlee Leuve managed by David’s good friend Nigel Pearson. He moved to Leicester City after one season and since 2020 he has been on loan at Rotherham United, Portsmouth and currently Blackburn Rovers. Closing in on 350 appearances in a blue and white shirt, Barry Bannan, aka “The Airdrie Pirlo”, is the man who makes the Owls tick. With four goals and five assists to date this term, the Scot made the League One Team of the Season for 2021/22 and won Goal of the Season for his audacious lob against MK Dons. Bannan was on the books of Celtic as a youngster, joining Aston Villa’s Academy in 2004. He made his senior debut for Villa four years later and went on to play 83 times for the Midlands side as well as taking in loan spells at Derby County, Blackpool and Leeds United. He joined Crystal Palace in 2013 and, and after a brief loan at Bolton Wanderers, moved to Sheffield Wednesday in 2015.
