32 — Vanguard, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2021 editor@yahoo.com President Buhari’s requests on debt relief How would this present administration go on a borrowing spree only to spend the proceeds on supporting another country whose challenges are less in magnitude? Recently, President Buhari incurred N1.145 billion on vehicles bought for the Niger Republic to combat crimes in its territory and committed N1.9 billion to Kano-Maradi, Niger Republic rail projects and expected the world to grant his request for debt relief! What has the government done with the borrowed funds? What effort has the country made to cut its bloated recurrent expenditure since the economy has been in shock, and what has this administration done to block the obvious linkages in the public sector? How many government officials stealing from the public purse and crude oil have been brought to book? How would this current APC-led administration continue with selfinflicted burdens and expect the rest of the world to be sympathetic? The federal government should cut down on its expenditure; the president’s trip to New York itself is a telling reflection of the profligacy the Nigerian government is known for. With the retinue of aides, governors, ministers, and others dignitaries which is unnecessary show. With the level of hunger, poverty, inflation, and insecurity shows that this government has failed Nigerians. John, 08031547497 Kogi state govt and ownership of Obajana cement plant In a two-page advertisement published in major national dailies, the Dangote Industries Ltd. provided facts and figures to support its hundred percent ownership of Obajana Cement Plant. The onus is now on the Kogi State Government to present its own proof of ownership to the public with facts and figures. Sending armed thugs to invade a corporate entity, for whatever reason, is a criminal offence under the law. Cement is a company quoted and traded daily on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, so, the Kogi State government should purchase shares on the stock exchange. Barr. A. Olalere, 08060782216 Rising inflation rate in Nigeria Nigeria’s rising inflation rate will continue as long as the country continues to rely heavily on the importation of most of its consumer goods. As long as Nigeria is not involved in productive activities, the current inflation rate will continues to rise because we import practically everything which required foreign exchange. The federal government should provide an enabling environment for businesses to thrive by taking steps to encourage local production. Inflation is something that every Central Banks including the Central Banks of Nigeria, CBN and responsible government should be worried about and strive to manage and keep within reasonable and acceptable limits for the benefit of the economy and standard of living of Nigerians because it is dangerous. The masses are suffering due to poverty and inflation in the Nigeria; Inflation can destabilise an economy, drive out foreign investors due to exchange rate and hurts our purchasing power and make it difficult for people to afford basic needs. When will the APC’s led government delivered all dividends of good governance they promised during 2015 elections. Which they declared to provide for the masses? President Buhari and the APC should please change their policies for the benefits of the masses because Nigerians are at the receiving ends, the economy is in shamble. Anonymous, 08067557715 Food shortage and high cost The continuous attacks and killings of farmers by Fulani herdsmen, bandits, and Boko Haram have resulted in a severe acute food shortage and an increase in food prices in Nigeria because farmers can no longer access their farmlands and the majority of them have deserted their homes for safety. It is sad that the federal government has failed Nigerians in terms of security and other policy that will be of benefit to Nigerians. Insecurity is the primary cause of high cost of food in Nigeria, the federal government should improve on security to enable farmers return to their farms because farmers cannot access their farms which addressing the inefficiencies in the energy supply chains and needs for relevant fiscal policy measures, such as suspension of the new excise duties. Romanus Ndehigwo, 08024209181 Tackling food shortage The killings, maiming and destruction of farmlands by Fulani’s herders have really become a serious threat to food security in Nigeria. A good number of states known for massive production of crops are recording low harvest due to the activities of herders and banditry, which has forced majority of the farmers to abandon farming. The federal government and relevant authorities should tackle this problem squarely because it is an antidote to high cost of food and food crisis that the nation is experiencing now. Government should trace the root cause of insecurity and find a lasting solution; it is only then we can have solution to food insecurity. Barr. Anthony Obi, 08056009586 Insecurity in Nigeria The lack of seriousness in tackling insecurity in Nigeria as seen by the deafear posturing of the APC’s led government over incessant calls by Nigerians of note to overhaul the security architecture of the nation, leaves one with the unpleasant conclusion that there is a clandestine conspiracy to subjugate Nigerians to the whims and caprices of Fulani herdsmen.
