term, the students must attend<br />
two meetings and participate<br />
in two community events. The<br />
kids go above and beyond these<br />
requirements. They enjoy that<br />
they’re in the community with<br />
their friends and they see their<br />
impact immediately.”<br />
Recently, the Leo Club took<br />
part in a drive collecting jeans<br />
to donate to Sole Hope. They<br />
collected close to one hundred<br />
pairs and a huge number of kids<br />
were in attendance. “I was very<br />
pleased with the amount of jeans<br />
collected,” states Spellman. Each<br />
Leo Club member who brought<br />
in at least five pairs of jeans received<br />
community service credit.<br />
Sole Hope is a Lions project<br />
where the materials from the collected<br />
jeans are sent to Africa.<br />
Native cobblers then cut out a<br />
sandal pattern to make shoes for<br />
local children. This helps prevent<br />
cuts on their feet; otherwise<br />
they would be at risk of various<br />
wounds, infections and parasites.<br />
Sole Hope also educates the community<br />
about the importance of<br />
wearing shoes.<br />
The Leo Club assisted the<br />
Lions by not only collecting jeans<br />
via donations from the KP community,<br />
but by prepping them as<br />
well. They cut off the waist bands<br />
and leg seams to get the flat material<br />
ready to be shipped. All the<br />
scraps they cut off will be sent<br />
out to be made into insulation, so<br />
every piece of each pair of jeans<br />
is being utilized.<br />
Like the Lions, the Leo Club<br />
lends its support to events in the<br />
tri-town area. Groups or organizations<br />
needing help from the<br />
Leos can contact the club and its<br />
board of directors, which is comprised<br />
mainly of students guided<br />
by advisors like Spellman. They<br />
will then determine if there is<br />
enough support available to assist<br />
in whatever project is presented<br />
to them.<br />
Being part of the Leo Club<br />
not only exemplifies how to be<br />
helpful members of the community,<br />
but colleges are also aware<br />
of what the club is and does, and<br />
it looks great on a college resume.<br />
This holiday season, the Leo<br />
Club will be assisting the Lions<br />
with their Christmas tree sales,<br />
located at the Dunkin’ on Main<br />
Street in <strong>Norfolk</strong> and the <strong>Wrentham</strong><br />
American Legion on Route<br />
1A. Leos will also take part in the<br />
<strong>Norfolk</strong> tree decorating contest.<br />
Decorated trees will be lit on<br />
<strong>December</strong> 4 during the annual<br />
Santa Parade and kept on display<br />
into the New Year.<br />
“I’m excited to see what the<br />
kids come up with, they’re very<br />
creative,” Spellman shares.<br />
