PREFACE This is the 38 th annual "Liste des Travaux Arachnologiques" published by the International Society of Arachnology This year’s Liste contains roughly 1,900 references. The goal of the Liste is to provide as soon as possible a guide to all arachnological literature pu blished in the previous year. It covers the usual academic topics, as well as toxicology (venoms), arachnids in agroecosystems (and other applied uses of arachnids), and arachnids as prey of, or hosts to, other organisms. The arachnocultural literature (arachnids as pets) is not systematically canvassed, although some publications containing relevant information may be included by the editors. The Liste draws principally on four broad sources. First is Jean-François Cornic's preeminent database of all arachnological literature pertaining to spiders. Second are various "on-line" or commerical bibliographic databases, searched for each non-acarine ordinal name. The mere inclusion of those names as a keyword is sufficient for inclusion in this Liste, and explains why the relevance to arachnology of some references may not be obvious from the title. Third are the annual submissions by ISA Correspondents from the 66 countries represented by ISA's membership. These ISA officers often provide citations of important works overlooked by the previous two sources, and, especially, notice of works in press. Fourth are entries by ISA members on the ISA website itself (http://160.111.87.78/ISA/default.html). ISA encourages all members to submit notice of recent and upcoming publications on the website for the benefit of all members. In order to make the Liste as complete as possible, we wait until the first quarter of the next year to begin preparation in order to maximize coverage. The Liste compromises perfection for speed. It is only possible to examine a fraction of references reported; reliance on secondary sources is inevitable. Mistakes in spelling, year, or pagination can therefore be impossible to detect. Although we make an effort to report citations in their original language, diacritical marks in accented alphabets are particularly likely to be omitted because computers and the internet are still relatively unsympathetic to diacriticals. Given the variety of sources, copy editing of this list is imperfect. For all of these reasons, the user should not rely on this list as an authoritative source of correct citations. It is instead a researcher's guide to current literature. The board of editors is international and their explanatory comments are often in their own languages. We also prefer to overlook some inconsistencies in copy-editing in favor of rapid dissemination. I would especially like to acknowledge the Editor, Jean-François Cornic, who is retiring this year, for his exemplary help to the Society during a difficult time. I also thank the Associate Editors, James Cokendolpher, Gérard Dupré, Mark Harvey, and Wilson Lourenço (retiring this year) for their help in producing this year's list. Their editorial responsibilities are, respectively, Araneae (and overall assembly of the Liste), Opiliones, Scorpiones, Pseudoscorpiones and smaller Orders, and Scorpiones. All ISA members owe them their thanks for their volunteer efforts each year in producing this invaluable guide to the arachnological literature. I would also like to acknowledge the support of the ISA Executive and the Smithsonian Institution, and Lara Lopardo for proofreading and checking the manuscript. Jonathan A.
