6 ESSEX MEDIA GROUP THANKSGIVING FOOTBALL 2022 WEEK 3 Magical run continues Win streak extends to 23 games thanks to strong defensive effort By anne maRIe tOBIn assIGnment edItOR NORTH ANDOVER — Behind a superlative defensive effort, the Marblehead High football team extended its win streak to 23 with a 12-7 win over non-league rival North Andover Friday night on a cold and wind-swept night at Walsh Stadium in North Andover. A 39-yard touchdown reception by senior wide receiver Connor Cronin from 6’5” junior quarterback Miles O’Neill with only 23 seconds left in the first half was the difference. O’Neill finished the evening with 201 passing yards. Both teams excelled on defense for most of the game with all of the game’s scoring packed into a 95-second spurt at the end of the first half. North Andover struck first, taking a 7-0 lead on a 29-yard touchdown reception by Cam Partridge, who fought off two Marblehead tacklers to hold onto the ball with 1:35 left in the second quarter. Marblehead responded with a 51- yard drive, all in the air, capped by a touchdown pass from O’Neill to Ryan Commoss that made it 7-6 (extra point was blocked). A long kickoff return by Connor Cronin to the Marblehead 49-yard line set up the drive, giving the Magicians a short field. O’Neill took full advantage, completing five of seven passes on the drive. North Andover fumbled the ensuing kickoff, allowing Marblehead a couple of chances to punch it in but the Magicians squandered the opportunity after a North Andover interception in the end zone. A superlative defensive stop gave the Magicians another chance. Cronin hauled in what turned out to be the game-winning score to give Marblehead a 12-7 lead (pass failed) with 23 seconds left in the half. “North Andover was able to get the stops when they needed and take advantage early,” said Head Coach Jim Rudloff following Friday’s game. “We just really finally strung a couple of plays together where everyone was on the same page.” Both teams stepped up defensively in the second half. With 4:33 left in the game, a Magicians’ fumble gave North Andover a last shot to steal the game, only to be denied. But the Magicians’ defense stood strong, anchored by junior Christian Pacheco, who came up with several key plays to thwart the Knights’ final drive. The Magicians were able to squeak out the win, but Rudloff notes that his offense will have to clean it up moving forward. “We played very sloppy on offense all night,” said Rudloff about the game. “We have a tremendous amount of work to do if we expect to be successful moving forward.” Marblehead’s Connor Croninn breaks out of coverage and goes on to score. THANKSGIVING FOOTBALL 2022 ESSEX MEDIA GROUP 7 By Ryan VeRmette maRBlehead Weekly neWs WEEK 4 Tanners stun Magicians at home MARBLEHEAD— The Tanners shocked the Marblehead Magicians at home last Friday, giving them their first loss in three years, and ending their incredible win streak at 23. Perhaps the most stunning part about Peabody’s victory? The game wasn’t even close. Peabody’s offense had been rolling all season, but it looked like they would be tested against a strong Magician defense. However, Tanner’s Quarterback Shea Lynch and company silenced the Marblehead crowd on the first drive of the game. Lynch was able run a QB keep to get the Tanners inside the 10 yard line which would set up a 10 yard rushing touchdown for running back Will Pinto to put Peabody in front 7-0 early. O’Neill then led his team downfield with a 43 yard pass to receiver Brooks Keefe on the teams first drive. O’Neill ran a QB keeper for a 20 yard gain before senior running back Eddie Johns trucked his way into the endzone on a 3 yard run to tie the game at 7. After that touchdown, Peabody was able to shut down Marblehead’s explosive vertical passing game, keeping the Magicians scoreless for the next three quarters. O’Neill threw for 121 yards in the first half, but the offense was largely inefficient thanks to the Tanners defense taking away big plays and forcing a number of incomplete passes. Down 14-7 in Marblehead celebrates a touchdown by Eddie Johns against Peabody. the second quarter, Marblehead’s defense was able to get a stop and give the ball back to the offense. On their third drive, the Magicians had a golden opportunity to tie the game. O’Neill dropped back to throw and launched a ball downfield from their own 30 yard line that was intended for a wide open Keefe, but the ball was dropped for what would have been a 70 yard touchdown to tie the game. Marblehead would end up turning the ball over on downs and failed to get anything going offensively for the rest of the game. The Tanners went into the half with a 20-7 lead, although there was hope that Marblehead could make the necessary adjustments in the locker room to get back into the game, the Tanners refused to let that happen. Marblehead received the second half kickoff, but Peabody’s secondary immediately forced back to back incompletions to force a Magician punt. Later in the quarter, Peabody was the benificiary of a little bit of luck when Lynch threw a pass over the middle that was tipped by Marblehead, but was grabbed from the air by Batista who then darted for a 56 yard recieving touchdown. Lynch threw the fifth and final touchdown for Peabody on a pass to reciever Jayce Dooley for 35 yards. Despite the tough loss, STAFF PHOTO | SPENSER HASAK Marblehead’s season is far from over. The team still possesses a record of 3-1 and has an easy strength of schedule going forward, playing a winless Beverly team on Friday at home before traveling to face a Danvers High team that posts a 1-3 record on the season. Both of which should give the Magicians a much needed confidence boost heading into the postseason.
