Thursday, Dec. 1 Complaint A report at 12:18 a.m. from a caller at 375 N Broadway Apt. #2-305 who said his neighbor blares his TV all night by turning the volume up and down and that it shakes his walls and wakes him up. Police spoke to the neighbor and she turned the TV down. A report at 8:05 p.m. of a disturbance on Salem Street. The caller said someone is using construction equipment across the street. Police spoke with the contractor who said they will wrapt it up for the night. Medical aid A request at 3:02 a.m. for medical aid from a caller who believes she is having a heart attack. The patient was removed to Lahey Burlington. A request at 5:44 p.m. for medical aid at 23 Parsons Ave. The patient refused assistance. Motor vehicle violations/ complaints A verbal warning at 7:38 p.m. at 360 Walnut St. for a headlight violation at night. Wednesday, Nov. 30 Complaints A report at 10:25 a.m. of illegal dumping at 7 Kimball Lane. The caller said it was a silver SUV. A report at 10:52 a.m.from a caller who said the lights at 425 Walnut St. and 425 Market St. were stuck on red. The light cycle was monitored a few times and there were no issues. A report at 3:35 p.m. of an abandoned auto at 774 Summer St. and 5 Rockwood Road. Medical aid A request for medical aid at 7 a.m. at 29 Center Village. The caller reported a woman was unconscious after falling backwards and hitting her head. The woman was transported to Salem Hospital. A request at 7:52 p.m. for medical aid at 1204 Essex Village. The patient was transported to Salem Hospital. A request at 9:51 p.m. for medical aid at 217 Main St. The party was transported to Winchester Hospital. Suspicious activity A report at 2:48 p.m. of suspicious males at Baubles on Broadway, 495 N Broadway. The caller said one male was dressed all in red and had three cell phones and was taking pictures of the store's inventory. Another male went to a parked silver Infinity with hazard lights. Accident Tuesday, Nov. 29 A report at 1:57 p.m. of a rollover accident with personal injury on South Broadway. Complaint A report at 6:41 p.m. of a problem with an unwanted party at the Meeting House, 617 Main St. A report was taken. Medical aid A request for medical aid at 4:02 p.m. at 28 Grey Lane. The caller said he was having difficulty breathing. He was transported to Salem Hospital. A request for medical aid at 7:30 p.m. at 160 Forest Hill Ave. The patient was transported to a hospital. Monday, Nov. 28 Motor vehicle violations/complaints A verbal warning issued at 8:19 p.m. at 661 Chestnut St. and 1 Kimberly Terrace for a marked lanes violation. Photo by Patrick Curley Boy Scouts treated to a unique adventure at ReadyScout Camporee By Anne Marie Tobin Weekly News Submitted by Patrick Curley Scouts BSA Troop 48 Lynnfield attended the ReadyScout Camporee at the Army National Guard Station in Strafford, New Hampshire in November. This adventure was truly unique Upon arrival at the base on Friday night, the Scouts were greeted by an active Army National Guard member, who awarded each of them a T-shirt and an Army National Guard winter hat with the Army National Guard logo. Over the course of the Nov. 18-20 weekend, the Scouts attended Scout merit badge courses taught by active Army National Guard members, as well as volunteers from Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team, an elite volunteer search and rescue service in the White Mountains. Merit badge offerings included search and rescue, first aid, fire prevention, aviation, and public health. The Scouts learned from experts in these fields including medics, rescue searchers, pilots, etc. One of the highlights was the Saturday arrival of an Army National Guard Black Hawk helicopter and their search and rescue crewmembers. The Black Hawk flew in from its base in Concord, and landed right in front of the Scouts, who then had an opportunity to walk right up to the Blackhawk and talk to its crew. The Scouts slept in tents for two nights when temperatures plummeted to roughly 20 degrees each night. The Scouts planned out their meals, shopped for ingredients, and cooked their meals over a propane stove (since it was a military base, open campfires for cooking were not permitted). As the sunset Saturday evening at about 4 p.m., the Scouts got to work early, making their classic specialty chili dish. These are the kind of adventures that Lynnfield’s scouts participate in every month. In December, they will be spending an afternoon and evening, sleeping over at MetroRock, an award winning indoor rock climbing gym in Newburyport. During these types of events, Lynnfield’s Scouts learn practical skills that will serve them, their families, and their community for a lifetime. They learn resiliency, teamwork, leadership, athletics, survival, first aid and community service. Advanced Placement exam scores still strong By Emily Pauls Weekly News The School Committee meeting on Wednesday discussed the improvement of Advanced Placement scores in 2022. Out of 14 test subjects, nine improved, two stayed the same and three dropped. "Participation was great," Principal Robert Cleary said. "Over 70 percent of the graduating class took at least one AP class, which is a great number." One hundred seventy-six students took a total of 378 AP exams which Cleary said is in line with recent years. "The percentage of the students who take the AP exam …75 percent of those students who took an AP exam scored a three or higher," Cleary said. "They’re really putting the effort in and doing a great job." A total of 25 students attained AP Scholar status, which means they "scored a three or higher on three or more exams," Cleary said. Seventeen students earned AP Scholars with Honors status by scoring a minimum of 3.25 on all their exams and a three or higher on four or more exams. Seventeen students attained AP Scholars with Distinction honors with an average of 3.5 on all exams and scoring a three or high on five or more exams. "The average for our Scholars with Distinction was 4.11 so that’s pretty impressive," Cleary said. One of the subjects showing a dip in scores was calculus AB, dropping from 3.12 to 2.92. Committee member Stacy Dahlstedt asked if there should be any concern there. "Is there something going on there?" she asked. Cleary said that, while calculus AB scores did drop, scores in statistics (2.90 up from 2.67) and chemistry (3.21 up from 2.30), where math is included in the exam, went up. The average score in calculus BC jumped a full point to 4.67. "There is no one thing that you can say ‘aha there it is this is the reason why,’ I think this is just the matter of you know, there are a number of factors that impacted student performance," Cleary said. Physics and psychology scores also dropped in 2022. Physics dropped slightly from 3.19 (after a five-year high of 4.10 in 2019 and 2020) to 3.18. Psychology dropped from 3.00 in 2021 to 2.75. Studio art 2D and music theory were the top subjects with average scores of five. The studio art 2D exam had an increased number of participants going from three in 2021 to eight in 2022 with all eight scoring five. Four of those students achieved perfect scores, answering every question correctly. "Laura [Johnson] and Liz Hayden, our two art teachers, doing a dynamite job with our studio art," Cleary said. Computer science numbers have risen from last year as well going from 3.59 to 3.88, a five-year high. "I do want to call out computer science, I know we’ve invested a lot on that and that has seen a steady increase over the last five years which has been great to see a return on that investment," Jamie Hayman, school committee member said. One subject Cleary said he is looking forward to seeing where the scores will go next year is European history. The class wasn’t offered last year but was reinstated this year. In 2021, only four students took the exam with an average score of 3.75. Kathryn Moody, guidance chair at Lynnfield High School, said she ordered 100 more tests than last school year which is in part due to the addition of AP European history and another AP computer science class. Test scores in AP Spanish and French were low when compared to other subjects. The average score in Spanish rose from 2.46 in 2021 to 2.80 in 2022, its highest average in the last five years. French scores remained the same at 1.89. Hayman asked how important languages are to colleges. "Language is important, I think it helps round out the transcript, having all the core academic classes and language," Moody said. "Most of our kids do go on for that fourth year so that’s encouraging. It’s not a graduation requirement at Lynnfield High School… colleges like to see it and we push it." Hayman also asked if they should be focused on scores or the number of students taking the exams. "We’re looking at giving kids opportunities," Cleary said. "I’m far less concerned about what their scores are… when we’re looking at it, yeah five is a great score but depending on the student a three could be an outstanding score depending on how much they might have struggled getting there…and that’s a great life lesson." 1012 Eastern Ave Malden, MA 02148
