All About Weddings-Lindsey Tilley Cheek For Meredith Fashion Merchandising and Design alum, Lindsey Tilley Cheek, everyday is a fairy tale. Well, at least in the sense of planning a fairy tale wedding. As the Event Manager at the famed Bald Head Island Club, Lindsey is in charge of orchestrating all the club‘s extravagant weddings. However, there is a considerable amount of work that must go into each bride‘s fairytale at The Bald Head Island Club and as Lindsey told HALO her days are always full and unexpected, yet always fulfilling… As the number eight site in the nation for outdoor weddings, according to The Knot, there are a lot of expectations Lindsey must meet. But that‘s no problem for Lindsey, who has high standards when it comes to professionalism. Each day for Lindsey begins with checking and responding to her dozens of emails and phone calls. And for Lindsey, no one ever falls between the cracks. ―The most important part of my job is to stay in constant contact with my clients. If more than 48 hours go by without a response on an email, I am not doing my job correctly.‖ For Lindsey, her goal is to make each bride truly feels like the center of her own perfect wedding. ―I never want to make a bride feel like I have another bride…I should make each bride feel like they are the most important person in the world to me, even though I have 70 other weddings before their wedding.‖ Beyond the constant communication, there are dozens of other tasks that comprise Lindsey‘s work day, such as ―meetings, tastings, budget reviews, floor plan reviews‖ and much more. However, Lindsey credits her educational experience at Meredith as well as her internship opportunities with equipping her with the knowledge and skills necessary to keep up in the fast past world of event planning. Lindsey always knew she wanted a creative career that would incorporate her passion for good design. Her academic path at Meredith proved a smart choice for her career aspirations. ―I graduated with a Fashion Merchandising degree because I am very passionate about fashion and designing. And now that I have been in the event business for several years, I really think that they have a lot of things in common.‖ Working as a buyer and manager at Monkee‘s, a high end clothing in Chapel Hill, Lindsey quickly realized that, though she loved fashion, she was meant to use her abilities and passions in other outlets. Lindsey began interning at Grace Leisure Events and quickly realized she had found her dream job. ―I instantly feel in love and knew that [event planning] was exactly what I wanted to do as a career.‖ However, landing an impressive job as the Events Manager at The Bald Head Island Club was not so easy. ―On my days off, I would search the internet for job openings and send dozens of resumes out to local offices.‖ Fortunately, Lindsey‘s biggest connection was right next door, literally. ―My neighbor was a food and beverage manager at Bald Head Island Club and told me about the job. I sent my resume through e-mail, fax, and mail. I did not hear anything for two months.‖ However, her persistence paid off. After a summer of sending out her resume, calling, and faxing, Lindsey decided to make one last attempt at landing her dream job. ―On my last thank-you card attempt, they called back. I interviewed the first week in October…‖ and by November she had a job as the Event Manager at The Bald Head Island Club. Reflecting on her persistence in achieving her position Lindsey responded, ―It was an extremely long process, but well worth the wait.‖ -Bethany O Schneider
The Sweet Life-Anna Echols-Orlando, Florida “Happy to say I have no regrets.” For Meredith Family & Consumer Sciences graduate, Anna Echols, life is pretty sweet. As a professional Cake Designer and Decorator who recently made her TV debut on The Ultimate Cake Off, Anna knows that only one thing in her professional life is predictable--each day is full of sugar, icing, and magnificently crafted creations that would give Buddy from Cake Boss a run for his money. Describing her job in the world of exceptionally designed wedding and event cakes, Anna reflects, ―Every day is different, which is what I love about my job. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are mostly spent doing prep work for the cakes. Thursdays and Fridays are mostly spent decorating the cakes...I also deliver cakes on Saturday, and sometimes attend bridal shows on Sunday to promote the business!‖ No doubt her background taking a variety of different HES courses as a Family & Consumer Sciences major played a role in her ability to adjust to the daily variations within her work place. As a Family & Consumer Sciences major, Anna studied courses ranging from design to nutrition, both of which play an integral role in what she does today. In a field that requires the conceptual expertise of fashion design, the drafting skills of interior design, the 5 culinary understanding of food science, and the whimsical spirit that only a child development guru could understand, Anna brings the complete package to the professional table thanks to her Family & Consumer Sciences degree from Meredith. When asked if she wishes she has done anything different in her career, Anna was ―happy to say I have no regrets.‖ From Meredith student, to Le Cordon Bleu grad, to cake decorator and designer featured on primetime TV, Anna Echols is sweet evidence that you really can do just about anything with a Meredith degree. -Bethany O Schneider
