Since the 18th century, fruit cultivation outside the gardens and villages has been promoted;
at that time, of course, not for reasons of landscape conservation. Fruit growing was simply
important for self-sufficiency. And the meadows provided fodder for the cattle. Over the
centuries, more than 6000 fruit varieties have been developed throughout Europe. Today,
extensive orchards with high trunks is a counter-model to the monoculture of plantation
farming. The absence of pesticides and synthetic fertilisers also preserves the richness of
flora and fauna: meadow orchards can be home to 2000 to 5000 animal species. Have we
