Welcome to the 20th BCC Open 2022

The 20 th Bangkok Chess Club Open

was intended to take place in the year

2020, but international responses to

the covid crisis made that impossible.

Following a two-year hiatus we were

thrilled to be able finally to run the

tournament and, with better air quality at

this time of year, we could hold the event

in the new location of Chiang Mai:

literally “New City” in Thai.

The response from chess players

around the world was excellent. A long

break from over-the-board chess left many

players enthusiastic about competing in a

high quality live tournament again.

In all we welcomed 237 players from

40 different countries (see our map on

P10), many arriving with their family and

coaches. There were three turnaments

taking place, a Blitz tournament, the

Challenger tournament and the main

event, the 20 th BCC Open Championship.

Talented juniors

A great surprise was the strength of the

junior players who were giving a big

challenge even to seasoned grandmasters.

Three International Master title norms

were awarded.

Sponsors

These tournaments have been made

possible by the generosity of our sponsors,

management and staff of the Shangri-La

Chiang Mai, and especially our team of

organizers, arbiters and tournament staff.

Elephant Parade

This year we rewarded loyal regulars with

a unique gift, specially made by Elephant

Parade, an organization based in Chiang

Mai which assists injured elephants.

Sponsors

It is the generousity of our sponsors that has made this tournament

possible. Special mention should be made for PYN, for their outstanding

contribution over the years, sponsoring the VIP dinner which is always a

highlight of the event (see pages 62-65), as well as the tournament in

general.

As the tournament was held ifor the first time n Chiang Mai, we also

received enthusiastic assistance from the local chess clubs. Jipata – the

our quality Polo and T-shirts – is also based in Chiang Mai.

The BCC Open was a beneficiary of the Open Aid Project,

established by the international chess organisation FIDE in the wake of

the Covid pandemic.

We also have a number of “angels” who have made a vital

contribution, but wish to remain anonymous.

Thank you all!

Frequent Flyers & Elephant Parade

Bangkok Chess Club has been very fortunate to build up a

number of loyal followers, who return to our

tournaments year after year. This year we honoured 15 chess

enthusiasts who have joined us ten or more times, with a

unique gift specially made for us by Elephant Parade, an

organization based in Chiang Mai to assist injured elephants.

The elephant is a symbol of Thailand’s northern captial,

Chiang Mai.

and Petri Deryng,

Elephant Parade was set up to help the plight of Thailand’s

elephants after an exploding land mine maimed a baby

elephant. These miniature elephants are hand painted by

local artists, and are each numbered as part of a limited

edition.

During the tournament, Elephant Parade ran workshops at

the Shangri-La, for players and their families to try their hand

at painting their own elephant!
