Stretching along the bold granite coast of Seal Harbor and the Eastern Way,
lies Wanakiwin. Evocative of Acadia National Park in so many ways, this
peaceful 6.03 +/- acre property flows naturally through pristine woods and
cool green mossy glades to pink granite ledges on the shore. The perfectly
sited year-round house provides lofty panoramic vistas of the outer islands
and open ocean. With dramatic granite outcrops, lush native gardens,
towering evergreens as well as sun-splashed lawns, Wanakiwin compares
only to the Park itself in its variety of Acadian settings. This is a rare
opportunity to own an exceptional waterfront property on
the legendary Seal Harbor coast.
The magnificent 10-bedroom home is set discretely amidst pine and mature
spruce trees just off the rocky shoreline, and offers unlimited views to the
east, and west to the outer islands. Christopher Glass designed the
comfortable and gracious Main House in 1991, and it was built to premium
standards by highly-respected builder Nelson Goodwin. Exquisite
woodwork and flawless detail are everywhere, and the craftsmanship is
exceptional throughout. The interior flows like a ribbon through the many
sunny rooms, and the sleeping quarters offer ensuite privacy and comfort
with a variety of oceanside porches.
The house is entered through a spacious welcoming foyer bathed in natural
light from a skylight 3 floors above. Rich woodwork embraces this entry hall,
with a mahogany balustrade winding up the wide stairways and landings to
the 3rd floor. The sophisticated details of the woodwork here, as throughout
the house, offer the rich deep colors of classic wooden boat beadboard
sheathing, bordered with custom real plaster walls. Each room within the
house was designed to have views and a connection to the ocean.
The large, comfortable living room has a fireplace and double French doors
that open to the main porch overlooking the rocky shoreline and waters
below. A tiered sunroom adjoins the Living Room, offering an informal
sitting area under a skylight. Around the corner is the richly appointed Study
with a fireplace, built-in desk, map table, and bookcases. A curved wood
ceiling gives a nautical sense as one listens to ocean sounds from the double
doors opening to the private porch. At the end of the hallway is an airy,
light-filled Artist’s Study.
The Dining Room on the East side of the house off the living room offers
ample room for a large family gathering or formal entertaining. Graced
by a fireplace, this room connects to a large screened Porch for 3-season
dining – and more wonderful views to the East and outer islands. Just
off the dining room is a unique turret breakfast room with 2-story
arched windows and full views of the ocean . The large Kitchen is
modern and highly functional for the culinary expert, with a 6 burner
Dacor gas stove and first-rate appliances throughout.
Up the main stairs to the 2nd floor are three ensuite bedrooms with two
private ocean facing porches. The Main Suite has his-and-hers dressing
rooms and full baths, with a custom Dutch-tile decorated fireplace in the
main bedroom area. There are multiple guestrooms in the center and
eastern wings of the house offering ample space and privacy for guests.
So many tasteful and subtle touches are evident throughout the living
spaces. On the lower level, there is a gym, full bath and sauna, and a
playroom with fireplace. Just outside begins the
journey through the gardens.
The extensive landscaping that blends gardens and lawns seamlessly
with the natural contours of the property was designed and built by
Dennis Braccale, a renowned Landscape Architect on MDI who has
worked on many exquisite gardens. The Smithsonian Institute
documented and archived “Cliff Garden” in the Archives of the American
Gardens in 2010. Grassy pathways around the house lead to serene
flower gardens, and pine needle paths wind through the woods. Native
plants, ferns, moss covered rocks, and the iconic pink granite rocks of
the shoreline all combine to create an artistic palette where
land and sea come together as one.
To enter Wanakiwin is to be welcomed into a naturally elegant, tranquil
setting, where all the elements of Acadia National Park envelop and
inspire you. Across 650 +/-feet of rock-bound, forested coastline below
the hills of Seal Harbor, looking out over the Eastern Way, and offering
such a variety of scenery and surroundings, this property feels much
larger than 6+/- acres. Unmatched for natural beauty and breadth,
Wanakiwin is a wonderfully unique coastal Maine property.
While much has changed in Seal Harbor since the earliest
summer visitors in the 1890’s, there are two key elements
that have contributed to the uniqueness of the village as a
vacation retreat for generations of prominent families.
The most obvious is Nature herself, reflected in the
enduring natural beauty and accessibility of Acadia
National Park with its mountains, forest, bold granite
ocean shores, scenic elevated drives, and equally delightful
carriage roads and bridle paths.

But there is also the understated elegance of the place, the
low key simplicity of living, and a deep sense of serenity
derived from the privacy and distance from the hurry and
restlessness of high-pressure modern life. In Seal Harbor,
one enjoys nearness to unspoiled nature and spaces that are
ideal for quiet reflection. Those who have embraced the
timelessness of this beloved island community and its
unsurpassed restorative qualities cherish their time here
and count the days until they can return.
