MIKE SMITHGUEST ARTISTA Chicago native, Mike Smith first becameenthralled with jazz as an eleven-year-oldbeginning band student. And his dedication tothe art form was so great that eight years laterhe won the coveted Charlie Parker Scholarship toNorth Texas State University and was a student offamed saxophone professor Jim Riggs. He earneda bachelor of music in jazz performance.Mike has performed and recorded with over ahundred jazz greats, including Nat Adderley,Clark Terry, Art Farmer, Tony Bennett, JimmyHeath, Natalie Cole, Linda Ronstadt, DianeSchuur, Gloria Morgan, Kurt Elling, NancyWilson, Frank Sinatra and Frank Sinatra Jr. Heis featured as lead altoist on the Harry Connick,Jr. album Come By Me on CBS Columbia.After spending time with the bands ofMaynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich, Mikejoined Frank Sinatra’s core band as leadaltoist and music contractor. His stint withSinatra included television performances andCD recordings, and the Diamond Jubilee andCome Swing With Me tours (with performancesin Japan, Australia, the United States andEurope--including a gala in Monte Carlo forthe Princess Grace Foundation). Those yearson the road inspired Mike’s third recordingfor Delmark Records, The Traveler. Mike hascontinued on as the lead altoist for FrankSinatra, Jr., touring Europe and the UnitedStates. Mike has also held down a continuousweekly gig at Andy’s jazz club in Chicago. Thisyear Mike celebrates thirty-four years at thisfamed venue.In his travels Mike has done numerous radiointerviews featured on jazz stations nationwide.The Mike Smith Quintet has opened the ChicagoJazz Festival, and Mike is a recipient of theCannonball Adderley Award for Outstanding AltoSaxophonist in Jazz and a winner of a NationalEndowment for the Arts award. He has receivedcritical acclaim for his album, Sinatra Songbook,which features liner notes by Frank Sinatraand Frank Sinatra, Jr. Mike is also a Keilwerthsaxophone and D’Addario woodwind artist. Hehas performed as a guest soloist and lecturer,giving masterclasses and concerts at EastmanSchool of Music, University of North Texas,Berklee School of Music, Pepperdine University,University of Miami, and University of Colorado,Boulder, to name a few.Mike has also performed with andworkshopped the Navy and Air Force bandsin Washington, D.C. His tours have takenhim to Southeast Asia, Scandinavia, France,Germany, and the World Saxophone Congressin Spain. He is currently active in the Chicagorecording scene, doing national spots for radioand television, Professor of Saxophone atthe Chicago College of the Performing Arts atRoosevelt University and performing with hisgroup, the Mike Smith Quartet.10 UNT Two O’Clock Lab Band
