HISTORY OFUNT JAZZThis academic year, the UNT Jazz Studiesprogram celebrates its 75th anniversary as aleader in jazz education. While jazz had beenplayed before at this and other colleges, theDance Band degree at North Texas State TeachersCollege was the first bachelor’s degree of itskind to be offered in the United States. Becausethe degree focused on popular American musicat a time when higher education in music dealtprimarily with the European art music tradition, itquickly attracted national attention. The flagshipensemble, the Two O’Clock Lab Band, laterrenamed the One O’Clock Lab Band, showedthrough its performances at competitions andon tours and recordings that our students wereplaying and arranging on a professional level.This university became known as a place whereaspiring jazz musicians could develop theirtalents with the help of a dedicated faculty anda steady stream of guest artists; meet peers whowould challenge and inspire them; and prepareto launch their careers with a comprehensiveskill set.Gene Hall, Leon Breeden, and Neil Slater, the firstthree directors of the program, also directed theOne O’Clock Lab Band, our flagship ensemble.Its international reputation for excellence wasearned through the hard work of generations ofstudents who were coached to a professionalstandard; a yearly recording tradition that beganin 1967 and has resulted in seven Grammynominations; and a busy schedule of nationaland international tours.By 2008, when Neil Slater’s tenure ended, theprogram had firmly established its reputation forexcellence. The Two O’Clock Lab Band directedby Jim Riggs, the UNT Jazz Singers directed byParis Rutherford, the small group program andthe Zebras ensemble directed by Dan Haerle, andthe guitar ensembles coached by Fred Hamiltonhad established traditions of their own. Theaddition of a master’s degree improved our abilityto graduate well-prepared educators.Under the leadership of John Murphy from 2008to 2019 and Rob Parton since then, the programhas maintained its standards of excellence whileadapting to a changing music profession. The facultyhave worked steadily to revise the curriculum. Ourdoctoral degree has produced successful collegeeducators. We’ve added options in jazz strings andcommercial music. Most recently, the curriculumhas been revised to include a certificate in AfricanAmerican Studies and to bring more of our students’work in core music classes into the jazz idiom.The student-led Jazz and Gender Equity Initiativeembodies our dedication to diversity and inclusion.Through all of these changes in leadership, faculty,and curriculum, one element has remained constant:our focus on students and their musical andprofessional growth. Our alumni community extendsto every corner of the music profession. Alumni helpour recent graduates establish themselves in newcities; they support the program as donors; and bytheir varied demonstrations of musical excellencethey show our students that there is no limit to whatthey can achieve with a degree from UNT.UNT College of Music 3
