comforting truths.<br />
The debate Scotland finds itself in during the year 2014 can only be<br />
understood in this historic perspective: reflecting on where we have come<br />
from, how we got here, and where we might be going. This dynamic – of<br />
a dramatically changing Scotland, the waning power of traditional<br />
authority but its inability to adapt or die, and the question of what kind<br />
of Scotland we collectively want to live in – will not be fully answered <strong>by</strong><br />
the September 2014 vote. Instead, this is a debate without a final destination,<br />
which is reflective of a country trying to come to terms with what it<br />
is and what it wants to be. There can be no end point to that, but if we do<br />
it justice, we can begin to live in a country more attuned to the values and<br />
beliefs most of us aspire to.
