Founder's note

BROWN started as a way to showcase two business people that I

knew. That's how the "KOS Edition" was born in January of

2022. Doing this work also allowed me to build my portfolio.

Taking this small step to create a platform for brown small businesses

proved to be rewarding, considering the humble beginning we had. I used

free online tools to create my first 3 magazine issues. With that as my "seed",

GOD grew it in ways I was not able to on my own. From the start I received

interest from brands like Brown Pride Clothing, wanting to collaborate —

we both wanted to cultivate a spirit of celebrating each other rather than

competing with each other, instilling a spirit of collaboration — aiming to

steer the mindsets of our big dreamers and business owners to grasp and

adopt these concepts.

I received a dream about all this before the COVID lockdowns, yet I

only recalled it 3 months into my Brown Magazine SA journey. To this

day, I feel held by GOD because HE keeps me sure of my path by speaking

to me in dreams which show me signposts.

This is "The Issue Dedicated To Our Business Women". I'm all for the

underdog, the under-appreciated, under-valued and underestimated. I want

to show off the person that mainstream media doesn't make space for.

During January 2023 there have been geselsies happening in our

inboxes about how we, as small business owners, aren't taken seriously in

our communities and households — 99% of these business owners and

entrepreneurs being female. Hoekom? Do I respect that my sister, mom

or wife runs a business? Does her work space and hours matter, even if

working from home? Can I respect the T&C's of her business? In order to

deliver, we need our customers to respect financial agreements because

it impacts service delivery. Are we OK with asking for and paying "Late

Fees"?

We hope you enjoy this issue of Brown Magazine SA and I thank all

our contributors, collab-ers and readers for allowing us to publish another

issue!

This issue is an end to an era — we are partnering with a Godsent

individual who the LORD has sent to team up with me. There

are wonderful things up ahead so keep your eyes peeled!

We appreciate the thankless labour of you, business mom.

I'm NO feminist — I almost abhor the movement as it is today

and even what it was before in mainstream media. What I DO

speak up for is RESPECT for her status as business owner.

She is still mommy, wife and many other titles she wears on

her bosom. She gladly accepted and CHOSE these titles. She's

a Proverbs 31 woman: dutiful, entrepreneurial, creative and

submissive in a healthy, God ordained sense.

We operate in God's strength. Let's not forget.

MARYAM,

owner of

"Bodily Beauty

Salon"

I

walked all the way to

the salon that day. It

took an hour but once

I arrived I was ready

for some TLC! As I entered

her therapy room, I noticed

how stocked up her shelves

were. There were many

interesting things; from super

splurge items down to the

basic neccessities.

Certificates decorate the

wall — much like in a

doctor's surgery — and it let

me know that I would be in

knowledgable hands.

As she soaked and

scrubbed my feet, kneaded

my muscles and slathered

product on my face — I

realised that Maryam just

overflows with gems. She

is very chatty! Part of this

chattiness however is a

spilling over of information!

She knows what she's doing.

She knows a lot about

many things. And most

importantly, her hands know

how to work a facial and

BROWN MAGAZINE SA | 2023 FEBRUARY-MARCH

massage — those trained

fingers knowing every

feel-good spot on my face,

back, feet, head . . .

Maryam is also parent

to a special kid with

particular needs. Finding

institutions for autistic

children comes with a

demanding list and bill.

I only have one boy yet

parenting at my age, I find

myself lying on the floor

some days contemplating

skipping bath time because

the thought of wrestling my

son's will, wears me out. For

any parent taking care of

special needs: I take my hat

off to you. Maryam — your

drive motivates me.

She was just 19 years old

when she started this

small business journey and

naturally her parents were

protective of their young

lady. They're still very

protective and supportive.

She opened her business at

home: a setting that was

converted beautifully to

serve her clients. Starting

from home was a blessing as

it eliminated some expenses.

Bodily Beauty has stood

the test of time. It turned

10 years old on the 28 of

February 2023!

Maryam has energy

that I do not! I am

not certain if it's my age

but she has multiple hustles

going on: her salon, Avon,

Justine, being a vendor at

expos, attending workshops,

offering training, sharing

and resharing other small

business initiatives . . .She is

generous to a fault, as a lot

of us women are.

I have not yet been able to

out-give her!

I feel that as supporters

of brown small businesses,

we must ensure that as

customers we employ fair,

just and ethical business

practices with our friends,

family and businesses we

buy from. An example of this

would be — even if for legit

reasons you cannot pay on

time — to pay a "late fee".

Make it a norm, guys!

One of the "norms"

of coming from

a "traditional" brown

upbringing is this, and

please excuse my lamenting

as editor: We eat lekka at

weddings but bewaar jou

siel if the food wasn't on par!

Yet, when the food exceeds

expectations, dan skinner

niemand daaroor nie.

We need to share our

reviews, compliments and

market those services we

enjoyed, by word of mouth

and on social media.

And you know . . .

Some days, I'm faced with

"Am I going to make it?"

or "Do I throw in the towel?"

BUT instead I turn around

and just understand my

limits and receive grace from

those around me to slow

down, work more, work less,

to send my son away for half

the day, to fail, to flop or even

just to vent. My network of

business women, including

Maryam, have been a safe

space! So thank you.

SKINCARE BASICS:

"

Where do I start?" is a question I'm often asked

by clients who do not follow any skincare regime.

They're either too busy or overwhelmed by all the

information about caring for their skin.

"Do I HAVE to use sunscreen during cold

seasons?" is another popular question I get, as well as

the common complaint: "My skin feels terrible and

my products are not working!"

These are my "musts" that I've learnt in my journey

as a therapist in the beauty industry:

1 CLEANSING

Find a cleanser that is appropriate for your skin's

needs.

Usually there are different formulations for the core

skin types:

Oily/Acne prone skin - Gel cleansers

All skin types - Oil cleansers

Dry/Mature skin - Creme cleansers

2 MOISTURISING

This is for hydrating or moisturising your skin

according to your skin's needs. Skin conditions like

eczema needs extra care from formulations that

protect the skin's barrier.

3 SUNSCREEN

The higher the number, the BETTER!

And then, be patient . . .

After using products for three months, it is best to

introduce one new product, every second month

BEFORE deciding whether the product works or

not. In this way you give your skin a chance to work

hand in hand with your skincare regime.

ALICIA ENGLISH,

Founder

of

"The Olive Exchange"

SOME TEXT SOURCED FROM

"MITCHELLS PLAIN ENTREPRENEURS HUB" SPOTLIGHT, ON THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA PAGES.

081 742 7475

TheOliveExchangeZA

@theoliveexchangeza

info@oliveexchange.co.za

Alicia approached me

in my capacity as

graphic designer, to

collaborate with her

and Stanley Jacobs, to bring to

life Cape Flats Stories magazine

— and what a fun-filled project

it was! Download and read the

magazine here

She birthed The Olive Exchange

in 2017 but started running

her publishing business full

time at the beginning of 2022.

The Olive Exchange exists to

break the moulds that female

entrepreneurs as well as Cape

Flats entrepreneurs have been

shown.

When, for you, did you feel

despondent at times? I am not

really the type of person that

gets despondent because I am

such a self-motivator. However,

I do get disappointed, frustrated

and even overwhelmed at times.

Moments of breaking barriers are

often overwhelming, for example,

on the day of an event that I

organised. The same for when

I need to speak at a function or

promote our books at a festival

or market. Those are days that

I really miss my late husband

because he was always my biggest

supporter and would take care

of the boys and whatever else I

needed to go on my way. I remind

myself each time I feel like that,

that God is breaking another

barrier in my and my boys' lives.

So, even when I feel afraid, I

push through because of purpose.

When it comes to my purpose, my

fears and frustrations must take a

backseat.

How did you finance your

business? When I started out

in 2021, it was all self-funded.

My business is now sales-driven,

which is why I spend most of

my time doing marketing and

promoting our books I Miss

Daddy and Ek Mis My Pappa.

How do you balance your home

life and your work life? I have

flexible work hours. After Noel

died in 2021, being there for my

boys have become my number one

priority. I try as far as possible to

pick them up from school and be

there for their soccer matches. I

also spend time with my church

ladies each week. There are times

when life gets hectic: running a

business, mom duties, studies

as well as doing child grief

awareness. Spending time in God's

presence, presence, and with my

boys and extended family, helps

me cope with the stresses of life.

As business women of

up for our ideas.

This is what she

said to me over the phone one

day, after I had said a few careless

things. Brown Magazine SA was

just starting out and the pressure

of giving it wings was weighing

heavily on me. I did not think I

could do it alone.

Yet Astrid's words were firm

and encouraging. GOD's people

come with a way about them...

The last time I saw her

make an appearance in a

publication was end of 2022, in

the Cape Flats Stories Magazine.

We featured Astrid in our June

to August 2022 issue and it caught

the eye of others, which is why

they ran her piece again.

met her in person. I meet

I everyone I write about but

not always in person. She was

my first face-to-face interview

and I am glad that I did it. Some

people just have an "air" about

them and with her it was that of

a calm, confident, no-nonsense,

highly discerning and very private

business woman. Yet as time

marched on and we met a few

times more, her wicked sense of

humour made an appearance!

Make no mistake — she's

serious about business.

She runs it stealthily and protects

what's hers.

#LEKKA JY

SHANNON,

owner of

"Sugar

Momma's

She made the leap and

jumped out of a plane!

It's testament to her new

resolve to reach greater

heights.

It's wonderful how GOD

works. Shannon, like myself, has

three years of study behind her

Graphic Design qualification. I

remember her on campus — the

quirky meisie with the stunning

voice. She still sings, I believe.

Being super creative, Sugar

Momma's Cakes is a business

where Shannon managed to

merge design with something that

she loves — baking.

We featured her alongside

another foodie in our launch issue

of Brown. I called it "The KOS

Edition"

I don't know what it's like for her,

working in a kitchen as part of her

"job" whilst having toddlers in the

house but one thing I know for

sure, is that if it were me, I'd be

dizzy by the end of the day!

Her business began in 2012

while being a stay-at-homemom.

She had left corporate life

to spend time with her babies and

Not having answers

is like being lost.

I am guessing, but

that's probably how

it is with a rare disease because

you do not have conclusive

information that will help you

deal with your pain. As for myself

as founder, I speak from my own

experience in getting a diagnosis,

and consequently being able to

work my way out of it.

remember Megan from

I media24, back in the day.

She worked as photographer

and stylist, especially on decor

shoots. We both worked across

the You, Huisgenoot and Drum

titles, otherwise known as Family

Magazines. Somehow we both met

our nemesis while working there.

I was diagnosed in 2015 with

schizophrenia, after falling ill in

2014. Megan had been diagnosed

while she was still employed at

Family Magazines and would

black out during shoots. Now that

sounds very serious. This is some

information she shared online

about her illness:

" Idiopathic intracranial

hypertension (IIH) is increased

pressure around your brain.

It occurs when cerebrospinal fluid

(CSF), the liquid that cushions

your spinal cord and brain, builds

up in your skull. Pressure builds

up in your brain and on your optic

nerve, the nerve at the back of

your eye that helps you see.

The word idiopathic means “no

known cause.” Intracranial means

“in the skull,” and hypertension

means “high pressure.”

An outdated name for

idiopathic intracranial pressure

is pseudotumor cerebri.

Pseudotumor cerebri means

false brain tumor. IIH used to

sometimes be called pseudotumor

cerebri because the symptoms

can be similar to brain tumor

symptoms. It's a very rare disease,

it occurs in approximately 1 in

100 000 people."

Despite personal turmoil,

being ill, being fired from

media24 because the company

could not bord her (the disease

was so rare, their insurance

list did not cover it) — she still

managed to be anchored in her

faith, provide for her children

while persuing knowledge in other

arenas. The slap in the face from

"life" turned her head and she saw

opportunity in front of her. That's

a champion spirit!

She has studied and is busy

completing course exams for

becoming a Life Coach and Real

Estate Agent while running Aletta's

Handmade as well as Aletta's

Cakery. Tell me again why you

can't do something, and I'll show

you Megan. She endures much,

but diligently follows through.

When I read her story I

was silent for a while. It

goes like this:

Suraya's parents

became entrepreneurs in their late 30s.

After her mother passed away and three

months later, her brother was killed, she

suffered greatly and thought she could

replace her grief with a baby. One day,

while she was at home with her sickly

son, her cousin approached her to make

a 21st dress for her daughter. Suraya

refused at first, saying she did not know

how but her cousin ended up leaving

the fabric with Suraya. "Weeks went by

and one Saturday morning I decided to

give it a try, thinking that if I DID mess

up, I had warned my cousin." She used

old newspaper and, with what she could

remember from the days watching her

mother work, she finished the dress and

was amazed! "It felt like I had an out of

body experience", Suraya said.

"In that moment, something inside of

me changed. I felt close to my mother and

felt blessed . . ."

When she started Design26, she

brought 14 years’ of corporate

experience but no business or

entrepreneur experience. During her

first year she traded at flea-markets

and competed with cheap imports.

"I sold a lot of garments but was not

making a profit." In 2015, she attended

the University of Stellenbosch Small

SURAYA,

owner of "Design26"

Business Academy where she learnt

proper costing, marketing, and gained

understanding about being profitable

before being charitable. Determined to

grow her business, plus a hunger to learn,

lead her to many workshops and many

valuable connections."We have managed

to purchase a piece of land through the

City of Cape Town and are now in the

process of raising funds to develop the

1st Sewing Skills and Entrepreneurship

Centre in Mitchell's Plain with an

inhouse manufacturing plant. We are on

a mission to restore dignity, eliminating

poverty and social ills and breaking

generational cycles."

How do you balance your home life

and your work life? I have learned to

implement systems and developed a

schedule. It is also very important, when

you start your entrepreneurship journey,

that your immediate family, husband

and children share in the vision because

when you start, there are a lot of hours,

work and sacrifices needed to grow

your business. With modern technology

it is easy to balance the two if you set

the proper systems in place and are

disciplined, sticking to a set schedule.

JORGINA,owner of

"AdoreHerByG"

I

saw Jorgina's video one day on

her whatsapp status. It told a

story of perseverance and grit.

She is driven and very

hard working. Jorgina talks about

her brand, on her website, saying:

"At Adore Her by G, our goal is to

empower individuals by helping

them feel more beautiful and

confident. We do this by providing

an easy and affordable way to get

high-quality, luxurious lashes.

We want to help every individual

achieve their desired look, no

matter their budget or lifestyle."

I posed a few questions to this

bedrywige lady:

What keep s you fighting forward?

Firstly me wanting to give my kids

the opportunities that i never had

as a child, due to circumstances.

Secondly being a first generation

business owner and wanting to

show our youth of today that life

does not end at teenage pregnancy,

failed marriage, death of parents

and having failed at anything in life.

When did you feel despondent

at times? When my own family

and friends weren't supporting my

business or me as a person. I learnt

to not let it get to me, because I

have a whole country of strangers

supporting me now. I also get

despondant when things take too

long to happen especially because

I put in the work. Somehow, I

manage my feelings around that by

reminding myself how much I have

accomplished thus far.

How did you finance your

business? 25% was a cash donation

by a stranger who believed in what I

wanted to do since day one, and that

I would succeed. Another 25% was

savings and 50% was a loan which

I've paid off now. FUN FACT: The

stranger is now my boyfriend!

How do you balance home life and

work life. I take it one step at a time.

I draw up schedules for exactly what

it is I need to do, plus when I should

do it. For work I always pre-prep so

that I'm able to get to it all without

feeling overwhelmed. My kids and

brother are part of my business and

all my clients know this. Everyone

has adapted to it and that takes a lot

of pressure off of me.

MY NATURAL HAIR J

#CURL CARE TIPS

34 BROWN

ROBYN,

owner of

"wxnderlust"

If I’m being

honest, going

from consistently

straightening my hair

to embracing my "curly girl

journey", was a challenge.

My hair is naturally

curly and without product

it is exceptionally frizzy

– bushy is how I love to

define it. I enjoyed the cute

curls but back then I didn’t

know how to properly care

for them.

Growing up in Cape

Town, the women and

girls around me kept

their hair as straight as

a pin and with human

nature inclining us

towards mimicking the

characteristics of those

around us, I began and

continued to straighten

my curls for quite a while.

Mimicking those around

us helps us gain acceptance

from the group, creating

social bonds and giving

us a sense of belonging.

This was why I continued

to straighten my curls,

until one day, I decided to

embrace my beautiful bushy

hair — finally embarking on

my natural hair journey.

As empowering as

all that sounds,

it was also very

challenging to

find products that worked

on my hair, which led to me

making my own. My current

focus is creating natural haircare

products for all my "curl

friends" in South Africa.

I started embracing

my curly hair during high

school and alternated

between straight hairstyles

and what we call a “wet

look” (which describes curly

hairstyles). I love how curls

are activated by water alone

and how different they look

each time. I’ve always kept

my hair long, eventhough

maintaining the length is

time and energy consuming.

I get a full arm workout on

wash days!

I've never felt the need

to dye my dark brown hair

but for my matric farewell,

I set my heart on short

golden-brown locks, for a

change. Instead of golden

brown though, it turned a

brassy orange, which is what

happens when you bleach

dark hair!

Shortly after the big

chop and failed dye job,

I decided to go natural

and stopped straightening

my hair altogether. It was

time for a new journey

as a young adult, and

one thing I wouldn't miss

about straightening my

hair is having to do it every

single day because of my

natural frizzy locks. Prior

to embracing my natural

hair, I considered my bushy

hair as a bad thing - as if

it was too big, too much

and unattractive. But who’s

beauty standards were these?

Having insecurities are

normal to a certain degree,

but when it comes to our

God-given features that we

cannot change, I believe

self-acceptance is more

important than conforming

to beauty standards that are

unrealistic and unnatural.

My natural hair

journey is

an ongoing

process of

learning, unlearning and

acceptance. While I was

deprecating my own hair —

viewing it as too frizzy, big

and undesirable — other

women were admiring

my curls and companies

successfully sold wigs that

look just like my hair!

This called for some deep

introspection and the more

I committed to keeping

my hair curly, the more I

learned to love my natural

self. The most empowering

part of this journey is that it’s

changed the way I perceive

myself and the words I use.

Words like "frizzy", "bushy"

and "kroes" are words

historically having negative

connotations to them as

a result of colonialism

and euro-centric beauty

standards.

MAGAZINE SA | 2023 FEBRUARY-MARCH DO NOT DESPISE THESE SMALL BEGINNINGS, FOR THE LORD REJOICES TO SEE

OURNEY

By Robyn Gora

I have redefined these words

for myself and now I take

pride in them. Frizzy? I love

it. Bushy? I took it, flipped it

and started a powerful media

movement with it called "A

Proud Bushie".

One challenge I’ve come

across in my natural hair journey

is finding a hairdresser that

knows how to cut my type of

hair. The last time I got my

split ends cut, the hairdresser

complained about how thick

my hair was and how tired she

was getting. Maintaining my

hair requires a lot of energy and

patience, and that unpleasant

experience influenced my

decision to learn how to cut my

own hair. I’m no expert, just a

"DIY devotee". On the bright side,

I get better at it with each cut.

Now that I’ve evolved into

this confident "curly queen" I

was always meant to be, I find

joy in sharing what I've learnt

and what works for my hair. I

share it in my new series called

#CurlCareTips on Instagram

@wxnderlust.co.za. Here I share

more about which products

work best, what to avoid, what

increases growth and how to

reduce breakage and damage.

wxnderlust.beauty

@wxnderlust.co.za

www.wxnderlust.co.za

In 2021, I launched my

e-commerce store www.wxnderlust.

co.za and started building a

community of curly crowned

queens. My personal favorite curl

care essentials available on my

website are the following:

* SATIN BONNETS help protect

my hair, tame my frizz and help

my hair retain its natural moisture.

* SATIN SCRUNCHIES manage

my curls and tie my hair without

causing any breakage to my hair.

* SATIN BOHEMIAN

HEADBANDS to style my hair in

luxury.

* THE MICROFIBER

HEADBAND and matching

scrunchie is essential for wash

days, skincare days and

getting ready in general.

Satin fabric has a

wide range of benefits

for all types of hair

that I’m always raving

about on my website

and Instagram. I’m

also working on

something satin and

amazing that will be

launching soon!

In addition to providing South

Africa with natural hair-care

essentials, www.wxnderlust.co.za

also carries a wonderful range

of aromatherapy bath crystals

infused with indigenous healing

herbs, organic scrubs to gently

exfoliate skin, gift boxes, gourmet

seasoned salt and more locally

made, indigenous products that

are on their way. Self-care Sundays

and wash days have been made so

much easier with my microfiber

headband and scrunchie set.

MICROFIBER is a fabric that is

gentle on natural hair and reduces

frizz. THE HEADBAND holds

my hair back while I’m doing

skincare or makeup, and

it absorbs excess water

after washing my

hair. The matching

MICROFIBER SCRUNCHIE

comes in handy on wash days

when tying my wet hair, which

means I don’t have to get

my favourite scrunchie wet!

Microfiber doesn’t tangle or pull

the hair like regular hair ties do, so

it doesn’t cause breakage which is

great.

I always love hearing about

other people's natural hair journey

because there’s always something

new to learn. All curls are beautiful

in their diversity, and I truly

believe that caring for your hair

is an important part of keeping it

healthy and protected – ultimately

saving you money on hair products

in the long run. Protecting your

crown has never been easier with

the curl care essentials available at

www.wxnderlust.co.za.

I

met Shelley after completing a magazine

able to attract more clients and I felt like I

was finally reaping a harvest, after working on

something with all my heart. Shelley called me

and we spoke for an hour on our very first call!

We are now very close, in terms of supporting

each other and I am glad I crossed paths with her.

She has had to overcome some job market and

personal obstacles but what kept ME going some

days, was her determination to keep going. This is

what she has to say about her journey:

"A

s a young and ambitious entrepreneur,

starting my own media company was a

dream of mine. I had always been passionate about

media — from writing articles to creating artwork

& designing magazines — I knew I wanted to turn

this passion into a career.

started working at a media publishing company.

I While I learned a lot at my job, I knew that I

wanted to create something that was truly my own.

So, I decided to take the leap and start my own

media company!

The first step was establishing a clear vision and

mission. I wanted to create a media platform

that was innovative, engaging, and accessible

to all. I set out to provide content that was both

informative and entertaining, with a focus on

quality storytelling.

Next, I began building my team. I reached

out to individuals who shared my passion

it a success. Together, we brainstormed ideas

for content, built our website, and created a

marketing plan to promote my brand.

knew that in order to succeed, I needed to

I stand out in a crowded market. I focused on

creating unique, niche content that would appeal

to a specific audience. I leveraged social media

platforms to grow my audience and engage with

them on a regular basis.

Finally, I secured partnerships with companies

and brands, which allowed me to expand our

reach and create more opportunities for growth.

Starting my own media company was a

challenging and rewarding experience.

Through hard work and determination, we

were able to establish ourselves as a trusted and

innovative media platform. I learned that with

a clear vision and a dedicated team, anything is

possible.

"

Shelley and I have been teaming up for

support, brainstorming, content and also skills

exchanges. She is SO passionate, that she now

designs her own pages! This, after I taught her

a few things, and voila, she was doing it! She

works hard, forgoes a social life (like many of

us) and handles all the roles too (like many

of us). She is quite adept at sales and that is a

valuable skill these days. We just want you to

keep going and making lekka material for us to

EGGPLANT

ketolasagne

SERVES 2-4

INGREDIENTS:

● 4 medium eggplants

● 8 tablespoons coconut oil

● 2 tablespoons butter

● 1 level tablespoon sugar

alternative (or add to taste)

● 1 cup cream

● Your choice of spices

● 2 tomatoes (soaked in boiling

water and peeled)

● 1 onion

● 1 packet tomato paste (70g)

● 1 cup mozzarella cheese

● 4 garlic cloves, or add to taste

● black pepper, to taste

● 8 tablespoons parmesan powder

FOR WHITE SAUCE:

● 1-2 cups full cream (depending

on how saucy you want it)

● pinch of salt, to taste

● 2 tablespoons butter (for added

flavour to the sauce)

● 5 - 8 tablespoons parmesan

powder

Note: Simmering on medium

to high heat allows the sauce to

thicken.

METHOD:

MAGAZINE SA |

● Fry eggplant in coconut oil on

medium to high heat until soft

and crispy. (Eggplant soaks up the

coconut oil, so be sure to regulate

the heat, and use a paper towel to

drain excess oil once fried).

● Prepare your tomato and onion

salsa (chopped) with chilli, if

desired. Bring the mix to a boil,

then add the tomato paste, sugar

alternative, black pepper, and

chilli, to taste. Simmer for 2-3

minutes.

● Prepare white sauce using

cream, parmesan, and grated

garlic (parmesan thickens the

sauce).

HOW TO PREPARE SAUCE: Melt

butter on low to medium heat.

Simmer the cream and add

Parmasan to thicken. Stir until

the sauce thickens (you can add

more parmesan for a thicker

consistency). The sauce will

thicken while resting.

● Layer eggplant, tomato salsa,

white sauce, and mozzarella.

Repeat. Sprinkle top with finely

grated mozzarella, and the

remainder of the parmesan.

Oven-bake at 180°C for 20-25

minutes, or until golden brown.

● Serve with a butternut, rocket,

and feta salad. And voilà! Super

quick and easy, and packed with

delicious flavr!

Note: You can add lean mince to the

salsa mix if desired.

Reconnect the String:

The African Origins of

Hip Hop Culture and its

Ancestral Healing Power

by Emile YX? | R150 |

Reconnect the String shows

the parallels between the

various elements of Hip

Hop culture and ancient

African traditional forms

of expression. The ancient

circles around fires, where handclaps and cyclic chants

can be compared to the looped break that pioneering DJs

innovatively recreated as the merry-go-round – forms the

backbone of Hip Hop culture. The same break-beat that

drove the b-boys to break, also drove the ancients into

trance.

Ancient storytellers can be compared to MCs

that “catch the fire”. The Bushmen rock art of tranceinduced

healers can be compared to Hip Hop’s aerosol

art. The elders that passed their lived experience to the

next generation can be compared to “the OG” sharing

knowledge of self.

These parallels are interwoven with 39 years of

practical Hip Hop education, lived experiences, vital life

lessons and a plan of action. This book sets the foundation

for future books such as We Live This, Making a Black

Noise and Hip Hop Healing the Hood, where Hip Hop

practitioners tell their own stories.
