Thrive by Lesley Riddoch sampler

Why won’t Scots simmer down? Why batter on about independence when folk voted No a decade back? After all. Scotland’s not as populated as Yorkshire, nor as wealthy as London. But it’s also not as Conservative, as keen on Brexit, or as willing to flog public assets to Tory party pals. So does Nicola Sturgeon’s departure terminally damage the case for independence? The answer, with all respect to her legacy, is no. Scotland has bigger fish to fry. In this book, Lesley Riddoch makes an impassioned call to action, weaving academic evidence with story, international comparison and anecdote to explain why Scotland is ready to step forward as the world’s newest state.

Does indy mean SNP rule forever?
37
Scotland is a social democracy stuck in a conservative country.
And stuck, it cannae thrive.
Agreed, thriving was once o’er hopeful – above our station
and beyond expectations. But ten years on from the indyref,
ticking over just isn’t good enough. Not for our children, who
will leave a Scotland that stays tethered to a backward-facing,
under-performing, archaic, unequal and isolated Britain. And
whisper it, belonging to the worst-performing economy in
northern Europe isn’t good enough for us either. Our eyes
have been opened.
Every crony millionaire contract, starved public service,
and broken promise about eu membership confirms Scots
have been conned by the old Etonians who run the British
Establishment. They might have screwed up so royally they’ll
spend the next five years out of power, regrouping. But they’ll
be back. They’re always back.
Scots know that with 100 per cent certainty. What vestige
of self-respect remains if we don’t act on that knowledge?
We have resources other countries would give their eye
teeth to possess. We know that our settled will – if taken
seriously – could build a country quite different to England.
And with the highest levels of trust in the uk, high levels of
solidarity between citizens and strong compliance with rules,
Scots can expect a Holyrood government to implement the
progressive policies other parts of the uk must postpone for
another day/year/election cycle.
We know what we want and what we need. Now we have
to do the scary thing and go get it.
And there, some folk falter.
Does indy mean SNP rule forever?
Actually, that’s far more likely in the present halfway house of
devolution. Despite its current travails, the SNP will continue
to attract the lion’s share of votes from Yessers and unless
Labour, Tories and the Lib Dems create a Holyrood coalition,
