composite recycling and 3-D woven composites.
AMFoR have now fully developed a strong collaboration with Professor Banabic
(Cluj-Napoca-Romanian visiting-scholar). A close working relationship with
Bombardier Aerospace has led to further gift-funding and this has provided a
mutually beneficial advancement in mechanical metallurgy and forming process
development. Elements of this work have lead to research and co-authorship of a
book that relates to some of Northern Ireland’s historic monuments.

The School of Engineering in conjunction with
NAMRI continues to be one of the University
strongest performers in both consultancies and KTP/
Fusion based projects. Of note were repeat requests
from companies all over Ireland for engagement with
expertise in areas such as design, sensors, materials
and electronics.
The Institute hosted the year’s highly successful UK Surface Analysis Forum, NPL
Workshops, Nanotechnology Institute UK meetings as well as a range of IET,
IOM, IOP & RSC events.
Key individuals within the Institute have been invited to present their work across
the world including, keynotes and invited lectures in Europe; Japan; India; and the
USA and staff were involved on many International Organising Committees.
NAMRI has managed to grow further
its strong technology transfer
capability. A new spin-in to NIBEC,
namely SiSaf was announced and this
company is leading in the area of
nanoparticle drug delivery. Key Spin-

Inc. continue to grow internationally

Alliance and collaborations with
Partners Healthcare in Boston as well as Intel (USA). The company also was
successful in being awarded a major £450k Wellcome Trust Translational Award.
Industrial integration has been strong with MATCH involvement in the medical
devices arena, CAST Award support from local companies and in particular a
new relationship with companies such as AVX Ltd. (NI), Enbio (Ire) and Shreader
(NI). The Institute’s PhD student base with its’ high International demand is fast
developing economically-relevant studentships from all over the world.
Of note also has been the role played by key NAMRI members with the Northern
Ireland Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment MATRIX Panel as well
as the Advanced Materials sub panel. This work has followed on from similar
leadership roles within the RoI’s Forfas and chairmanships roles of the NanoIreland
Materials Panel.
The Institute was also represented on the 2008 RAE UoA 29 Metallurgy and
Materials panel and the outcomes of this review will be in late 2008.
