We received 161 forms! Half of the available positions went to people who did not receive a spot last year and then we implemented the lottery system to fill the remaining slots. If you did not receive a position this year, you will be guaranteed a slot for next year but you still must submit a new volunteer form next spring to guarantee this. We do not keep forms from the previous year. If you have a position on the Welcome Desk and are unable to work your shift, please find a replacement from the substitute list. There are many volunteers that would like a chance to work the Welcome Desk. If you have any questions, please call Lisa Decker (626-9340) or Kris Leopold (766-9202), Welcome Desk Coordinators. September PTO Meeting Update On Sept. 13, Principal Frank Howlett was the guest of honor at the first Ridge High School PTO General Meeting of the 2011-2012 academic year. Principal Howlett spoke about a few initiatives such as the new Tutorial Center located in the faculty cafeteria and “BYOT: Bring Your Own Technology,” a move to have students access information online during classes using personal computers or smart phones. Then Principal Howlett opened up the floor to the audience and parent questions on many topics, including cafeteria procedures, snacking during the school day, how to apply Option II to Physical Education, and time allowed for students to switch classes. The PTO hopes that this annual presentation was informative and helpful to those who attended. Join Market Day! Market Day, the Original Fundraising Food Cooperative, is the nation’s largest food fundraising company (www.marketday.com). Since 1975, Market Day has been helping organizations across the country like Ridge raise funds for important educational resources. At Ridge, the proceeds from this fundraiser are split between the PTO and the many clubs/teams that help each month, like Marching Band, Cheerleading, Forensics, Wrestling, Devil’s Advocate (newspaper), Volleyball, and others. By purchasing quality foods (mostly frozen), you can help raise our profits which have been declining in recent years. Orders are placed online at www.marketday.com designating Ridge High as the pick-up location. Payment can be made online by credit card, or in person at the “Sale” by cash or check. “Sale Day” is usually the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Ridge High cafeteria between 3:45-4:45pm, although alternate arrangements can be made. First-time customers can try Market Day with $5 off of your first order of at least $25 by entering NEWFIVE during checkout. It’s a great way to try out some of the amazing products like the very popular ChicNSteakes , fresh-frozen vegetables like Broccoli Florets and kid-friendly Chocolate Chip Mini Pancakes. Update Your Stop & Shop Rewards The A+ Rewards Program begins again each school year. This program gives a percentage of your purchases, in cash, to Ridge High School every time you use your purple Stop & Shop card. It also works with purchases made online at Peapod. If you have not yet registered your Stop & Shop card, please go to www.stopandshop.com/aplus and follow the prompts to connect your card with Ridge High School. SCHOOL NEWS Guidance Department at Your Service Please bookmark the Guidance Department Web site for the most detailed and up-to-date information on our programming, events, and deadlines throughout the year: http:// www.bernardsboe.com/guidance/default.aspx. This year’s College Fair will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2010, from 7-9pm in the New Gym. Over 100 colleges and universities will be in attendance. Juniors and seniors should make a point to attend. The Ridge Guidance Department is sponsoring the “Navigating the College Search Process” program on Tuesday, November 8 at 7pm in the Auditorium. This is designed for junior parents who want to learn more about preparation for the college application process. Naviance Offers ACT and SAT Component, continued As students enter their Junior and Senior year, the topic of the PSAT, ACT, and SAT loom large for both students and parents. These tests can seem like large obstacles in the high school career for students who struggle with standardized tests. Students often spend a great deal of time preparing for these tests either using private tutors or paying for some type of online test preparation. Our Language Arts and Math curricula contains a large amount of test preparation built into existing units; however, students should still practice with the types of questions they will see on these exams. We are pleased to announce that we have added a very valuable preparation tool as part of Naviance. Students will be able to access a free online ACT and SAT tutorial program provided by Method Test Prep (a leading ACT/SAT test prep company). This service offers a practice system whereby students can work at their own pace and receive instant feedback. The program will also identify specific areas to address on each section based on the practice problems and allow students to take practice fulllength exams. The service includes the following: n Hear audio explanations of test questions n Access strategy guides for each test n Complete full-length practice tests n Receive hundreds of practice questions n Read easy explanations to every question n Track their strengths on each test n Receive valuable test-taking tips n Take practice quizzes to boost their knowledge n Access their courses on an unlimited, 24/7 basis, from any web-enabled computer There is much research to suggest that students can see increases in test scores even if they spent as little as 15-20 minutes a day using some type of tutorial program on a regular basis. Students are strongly encouraged to explore the program and use the features that they feel benefit them most. The Guidance staff and teachers will be discussing this program throughout the year. We hope that students find the program both a beneficial and convenient tool. [click here to go back to page 1] -submitted by Sean Siet Ridge Recognition Accomplishments Junior, Allison Pine, has created a soccer program for young children with special needs called GOalSetters. Senior, Bradley Wachenfeld, is a YMCA National Champion! Bradley won the 1500-meter freestyle swim at Georgia Tech this summer and placed third in the nation in the 800-meter freestyle. Bradley’s blistering times then qualified him for the Junior Nationals meet held at Stanford in August. Caldwell College awarded a Masters Degree in Special Education to Megan Mongno, Special Education teacher. This is her second advanced degree. Art teacher, Carla Falb, had her artwork on exhibit this September at the Preston Contemporary Art Center in Mesilla, NM. Her Roller Coaster series featured 5 oil paintings on canvas. The Morris County Daily Record featured Physics teacher, Jim Florance, in a two-page article, recognizing his volunteer efforts for over 24 years as a trail steward for Protect Our Wetlands, Water and Woods (POWWW). Jim is in charge of trail grants, trail mapping, trail marking, and trail clearing at Jonathan’s Woods, a 650-acre park in Denville. Wedding Bells The Ridge High Math Department family “multiplied” over the summer! On June 25, 2011 Travis Boop exchanged wedding vows with Jamie Boyce, who works in the Mt. Prospect ABA program. They honeymooned in Puerto Plato, Dominican Republic. Additionally, Tara Chung, geometry teacher, became Tara Leu on August 13, 2011 when she married Bryan Leu. They followed their special day with a honeymoon in Hawaii. Adena Maltz Friedberg, Social Studies teacher, and her new husband, Michael, also honeymooned in Hawaii following their wedding on July 17, 2011. English teacher, Lisa Costanza became Lisa Hahn when she married her best friend, Donald Hahn on May 26, 2011. Births Special Education teacher, Marisa Marcus and her husband, Jared, have a new addition to their family. Charley Rose Marcus entered this world on August 16, 2011 weighing 6 lbs. 8 oz. and measuring 19” long. - submitted by Mary Ellen Peters 3
