LETTER FROM REDWOOD CITY:
With a Little Help from Our Friends
From: Amy Schapiro, Academic Director, Mervin G. Morris Clubhouse
Subject: To college... and beyond!
At the Redwood City clubhouse, we are proud to announce that twelve of our
graduating seniors have continued on their positive path of enrolling in college.
In the areas these young people come from only 30-40% of students
graduate from high school. Few go on to college. In recent years, the club has
increased its efforts to address this, and it's working. Of these June high
school graduates, some will be the first in their family to pursue a degree.
Victor Rosas, Jorge Moreno, Francisco Espinoza and Arnaldo Castillo are all
attending Foothill College. To help prepare for this big step, Arnaldo worked
with volunteer Dennis Lenehan, a club board member. Arnaldo in turn helped
fellow club member Francisco Espinoza to apply. Ivan Martinez worked with
club staff to prepare his application to San Jose State University and now he’s
there, continuing his already successful career in music production. David
Brijil, Steven San Juan and Emma Quiroz are attending Cañada College. Emma
is on Cañada's soccer team. Manuel "Manny" Contreras, Darius Moore and
Joseph Garcia and will be joining them in the spring. Joseph was the clubhouse’s
2007 Youth of the Year.
Club member Cynthia Flores is at San Francisco State University and Lizeth
Chavez is attending Mills College in the East Bay. Lizeth was recently recognized
as a "Young Woman of Excellence" by the San Mateo County
Commission on the Status of Women. Her acceptance speech was so moving
that one of the women present offered to help her obtain scholarships to
attend college.
These young people are role models. All of them have contributed time
helping younger kids at the club. Arnaldo, Lizeth, Ivan and Victor have
worked as Teen Staff at the club. Many of them come back frequently to
volunteer as well. They are all fascinating and talented individuals. We look
forward to watching them flourish, graduate and succeed in whatever careers
they choose.
Graduates (some in photos on cover and above):
David Brijil, Arnaldo Castillo, Lizeth Chavez, Francisco Espinoza, Cynthia Flores,
Announcement: National Recreation Foundation Presents Challenge
The National Recreation Foundation has awarded the club a challenge grant of $300,000 to support the school-based Center for a New
Generation program over the next three years. The Foundation, based in Bloomington, Indiana, has been a major supporter of the club for more
than a decade. Its previous investments in the club’s Healthy Choices Initiative have fostered broad implementation and improvements of
Fitness, Athletics and Life Skills Programs at the clubhouses, including Triple Play and Smart Moves. This latest grant requires that the club first
raise $300,000 from new or lapsed donors. It will also match gifts from current donors that increase their giving by 25% or more this year.
The club is deeply grateful for the Foundation’s confidence and support and for the advocacy of Foundation trustee Bob Jaunich.
With the community’s support the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula can meet this challenge.
A Question of Opportunity
CIVIC ACTIVIST STUART MOLDAW SAYS HE BEGAN HIS SUPPORT OF THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF THE PENINSULA WHEN HE
AWOKE TO THE SHOCKING DIFFERENCE IN OPPORTUNITY EXISTING BETWEEN KIDS WEST OF HIGHWAY 101 AND THOSE ON THE
EAST SIDE. 101 ISN’T THE ONLY DIVISION: REDWOOD CITY, NEIGHBORING AFFLUENT ATHERTON, ALSO HAS THOUSANDS OF
LOW-INCOME PARENTS STRUGGLING TO KEEP THEIR KIDS FROM AMONG THE 60 PERCENT WHO DON’T MAKE IT THROUGH HIGH
SCHOOL. THE OPPORTUNITY GAP IS WIDENING, NOT DIMINISHING. MORE EFFECTUAL STRATEGIES AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
ARE NEEDED TO ADDRESS THIS CONDITION THREATENING SILICON VALLEY’S FUTURE.
Atwelve-year-old in western Menlo Park or Palo
Alto goes home from school each day to parents
who likely have master’s degrees, and who
contribute a few thousand dollars supplement so
their public schools can spend an annual $8,000
on each student. Their son or daughter is taught
in classes of about 15, and 90 percent of their peers are
proficient in math and English. Baseball, piano and chess
are among their after-school activities; summer camps
encourage their learning skills, and a special tutor helps
with any weak spots in math or science. Their homework
room at home is quiet; their eyes are on SATs and APs from
an early age, and they know the difference between
Stanford and Cal. Their involvement with gangs is on
television. Almost all will graduate from high school and
attend college.
In eastern Menlo Park, Redwood City and East Palo
Alto, a youngster likely returns from school to spend the
remaining four hours before dinner looking for something
to do. Family is often a single parent or
grandmother working long hours with less
than a 9th grade education, and only half
the families speak English. Public schools
offer the kids a $4,000-a-year education in
big classes, with peers typically 20 percent
proficient in math and English. At home
with no adult, they may have to take care of
a little sister, and they watch dumbing tv or
play violent video games. Not unusually,
Young people in the
upper income quarter
of the population
have a 75% chance of
getting a college
degree. Those in the
poorest quarter have
an 8.6% chance.
evening fills the house to overflowing with more than one family. Even
the best of these twelve-year-olds are tempted by their older brother’s
action in the gang world. Most don’t graduate from high school.
“The story of the past generation is one of widening income
inequality,” reported the California Budget Project this summer,
describing a gulf that continues to grow across the country, and to a
greater degree in California.
Silicon Valley’s huge income disparity translates as an opportunity
gap for youngsters trying to grow up in it. Persistent low test scores and
high-school drop-out rates in the ranks of racial minorities predict more
Success attitudes must start young, with constantly reinforced ideas about
finishing high school and building a future. Below, Jerry Conneal, 13, gets an afterschool
head start on studies at one of the club’s four school-based programs.
dangers ahead. The opportunity issue is magnified by profound changes
in the need for U.S. workers in recent years. The number of unskilled
jobs has plummeted, and more than 85 percent of jobs now require high
school and vocational educations.
There is also increased belief in the business sector that more
college-level educations for youth from low income communities are
essential to the balanced growth of Silicon Valley. College is indeed
within their reach, as the graduates featured in this issue of
NextGeneration are proving.
At the TechNet Conference last October, Cisco Systems CEO John
Chambers renewed his call to refocus society’s investment in education
so the U.S. can improve its wavering success in the global competition
for talent. He said 71 percent of engineers in Silicon Valley are
of Asian descent--a huge asset to the industry. But many in the Valley’s
other minority groups, if supported by the community in their climb
from the opportunity gap, can also take their place in this workforce.
At stake is America’s socio-economic stability as well as its global
competitiveness. Today’s 70 percent high-school drop-out rate in lowincome
areas looks like disaster in the making, for the next generation,
for Silicon Valley, and for the nation. The truth is, we can fix it.
Peter Fortenbaugh
EXPECTING MORE FROM OUR NEXT GENERATION MEANS
EXPECTING MORE, NOW, FROM THE COMMUNITIES AND
BUSINESSES WHO WILL SOON NEED THEIR TALENTS.
In this issue’s lead article, we recount the dangers and dimensions of
the opportunity gap growing among young people in our society. A
corollary problem facing all of us in educational development is the
self-defeating attitude in many youths on the wrong side of that gap
who expect little of the future.
Overstated? We don’t think so. Kids are born wide-eyed, full of optimism
and hunger. If their spirit is not nurtured, they feel disconnected
from others. Indifference can replace that fire in the belly. Lacking
goals, kids see no reason to apply themselves at school. Many look to
gangs for a sense of belonging.
Club staff and volunteers recognize this disconnection. But they also
see how young people brighten and flourish when given the opportunity
to learn and play and discover goals in the nurturing environment of
our clubhouses and school-based programs. Sometimes we’re surprised
how little it takes to instill confidence in kids. Often they just need to
know someone cares.
The results we have achieved in the past few years of learningfocused
club programs tells us we are doing something right. In some
ways we are the victims of our own success: the positive response of
young people and their parents and schools have convinced us that our
teaching and encouraging are no longer sufficient. The club enters its
50th year with the knowledge that we are not serving our members well
enough unless we do everything we can to get them through high
school with a realistic plan for the future. That is our mandate today,
and our commitment.
It’s becoming evident that the longer learning days common in most
other countries are necessary in ours. Working with partner schools on
the Peninsula, the club is systematically offering after-school programs
for the kids in our communities. Our Center for a New Generation program
is now offered at four schools, and we have been seeking to
expand it so more students can gain access. CNG staff and volunteers
testify to the enthusiasm young people show for instructive, engaging
after-school activities, and how their attitudes
and grades benefit. Kids want positive, structured
activity at the end of the day.
Attracting teens is a challenge. We’re not going to propel more
young people to college until we focus more on their teen years. To
bring them into the club, we are working with a selection of teen-only
programs, special staff, and exclusive teen spaces in our clubhouses.
Board and staff are evaluating the wisdom and economics of building
teen centers, perhaps in partnership with other community resources.
The club is deepening its alliance with parents, learning how we can
better support families on a daily basis. We hold quarterly
Neighborhood Advisory Group meetings at our seven sites to learn
about needs and issues and to hear comments on the quality of club programs.
Many kids in our communities have little exposure outside their
immediate neighborhoods. Some have never seen the ocean or been to
San Francisco. They are unaware of the many career avenues open to
them. With the help of volunteers from that outside world, we are stepping
up field trip activity to open those young minds.
Building a more methodical results-focused agenda has required new
commitments by our staff, our board of directors and volunteers and by
our strategic partners. Those stalwarts believe we should call more public
attention to all the club does to improve youth outcomes.
Boys & Girls Clubs are usually seen as a good and safe place for kids
to gather after school for sports and positive guidance. The Boys &
Girls Clubs of the Peninsula is much more than that today, and our
strategies to shrink the opportunity gap require greater support from
our primary source of donations: the communities we serve. That’s why
we are urged to communicate clearly to our public the needs of youth
in Silicon Valley and what the club is doing about them.
As we enter our 50th year, we will speak out with more specifics, and
seek out more individual and business stakeholders who share our deep
concerns for the next generation.
Blair Mendy, 12, earns a giggle from Center for a New Generation
parent Sandy Green. Mrs. Green was honored as Parent of the Month
for her efforts to recruit other families into CNG activities.
2
After school means a crucial four or five hours each day
that can determine if a boy or girl will succeed
through high school, get into college and build a productive
life. Addressing the ugly fact that only 20
percent of students in the Peninsula’s low-income neighborhoods
are proficient in math and reading and less than 50 percent
graduate from high school, the club has been expanding
its presence in the schools.
Through the club’s Center for a New Generation program
located on school campuses, children in grades K-8 get extra
reading and math instruction, and receive mentoring, tutoring and help with homework.
Kids also participate in enrichment activities focused on art, science, fitness
and leadership--subjects largely eliminated from their schools. More than 500 children
will participate in CNG this year. Many graduating 8th graders are accepted into
high performing private high schools or other college-focused programs. CNG now
operates at four schools: Edison McNair in East Palo Alto, Belle Haven and James
Flood in Menlo Park, and a new program opened in 2007 at Hoover in Redwood City.
The day at CNG starts right after school. Children in K-5 grades work with teachers
and mentors to improve reading and math skills. There are games, and learning
disguised as fun. The ratio of students to staff is about 12 to one. After homework kids
participate in electives like music, Boys Scouts, BAWSI Girls--a fitness program partnering
with the Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative--and Super Star Science sponsored
through Stanford’s Haas Center for Public Service. Kids in grades six to eight are
enrolled in a CNG academy offering even more electives, helping them develop study
and life skills needed in high school and college. Academy students take field trips to
high schools and colleges where they meet with admissions representatives. Assistance
with high school entrance exams is also offered.
Sean Mendy, CNG Director at Flood School and a graduate of Cornell University,
says, “CNG is working. In addition to helping kids academically, the program affects
behavior and attitudes. CNG students are much less likely to be absent from classes and
more likely to be on time
to school.”
In collaboration with
the host schools, district
administrations and other
community organizations,
the club is studying further
expansion of CNG operations,
with the goal of
serving all needs of the
Ravenswood and Redwood
City school districts as
they’re identified.
Dedicated from the start: the early days
The year 2008 will mark 50 years of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula
service to the youth and families of the community. Club programs and
facilities have expanded exponentially since 1958 to give low-income area
kids better options in education and in life. During the last eight years
alone, the number of young people served by the club has tripled and
locations grew to three modern clubhouses and four Center for a New
Generation school sites.
Carolyn Miller was a member of The Newcomers civic group
in the late 50s when it sought a deserving benefactor for its
charity work. A struggling new Boys’ Club in Belle Haven
was their choice. Searching their memories, Carolyn (below right),
Langdon Hilleary, Margo Ritter and Ted Tanner (photo at right), offer
up some names of the earliest supporters of the fledgling Boys’ Club.
Charlie Horton, Bob Clifford and other members of the Menlo
Men’s Town Club were chief among them. Newspapers in 1958
described how valuable the Boys’ Club was in giving kids new hope
in low-income Belle Haven, and how buses were bringing in boys
from East Palo Alto. And how badly the club needed financial help.
The Newcomers, later known as The Atherlons, came to the rescue
with annual events and made-at-home booth-sale items from dolls to
dishtowels. Atherlon benefits at the Menlo Recreation Center raised
much of the early support money for the Boys’ Club. Llewellyn Cooper,
Carolyn’s dad, became an early board member, and he and Charlie
Horton and friends persuaded others to support the Boys’ Club and its
athletic programs, woodworking shops, art instruction and mentoring
in life skills. The businessmen would often load up cars with boys and
take them to the San Francisco Zoo and ballgames and museums.
Rotarians kicked in later with a “Dad of the Year” campaign in which
dads (and moms) each contributed $25 to sponsor a boy in the club.
At one crucial support meeting of the Rotary, reported a local newspaper,
“a boxing match was staged by William Killeen, manager of the
Boys’ Club, featuring two members, ‘Tiger’ Beasely and ‘Slugger’ Patio.
Chuck Taylor, athletic director at Stanford, and Al Wilburn of the
Indians football team...completed the program.”
Ted Tanner had been impressed when he read that a new club building
was going up in Belle Haven on the present site, much of it donat-
ed by local architects, contractors and unions. He pitched
in, and by the time the building was dedicated in 1965,
Ted had become president. That same year, the renamed
Herbert Hoover Memorial Boys’ Club bought up all tickets
for the big Ice Follies show in San Francisco, and sold
them at a profit of $10,000. Eight Peninsula Ball debutantes
were recruited as high-profile hostesses. Public
recognition was rose to a new level, and the club had proved money
problems wouldn’t prevent giving kids better opportunities in life.
Veteran clubbers recall that each time deficits threatened to close the
doors, as they did again in 1977, the young club pushed the fund-raising
envelope. In 1978 Atherlon’s Margo Ritter joined the club board-later
becoming president--and led the staging of a colorful “Night to
Remember” benefit featuring the famed Tennessee Ernie Ford and Les
Brown and his Band of Renown. The tab: $50 a couple.
Langdon Hilleary said he joined the board when he was “accosted”
by club faithful Bruce Michaels, and Lang in turn accosted Patrick
Goodenough, a golf friend who seemed social-minded enough because
he’d already been counseling prison inmates in San Jose. It worked:
both became inspired club leaders. Carolyn Miller joined the board in
the 80s to honor the pioneering efforts of her father who died at 64.
None of the early stalwarts, as they knocked on doors, threw parties
and knitted pot holders to support 1960s budgets of $50,000 could have
guessed their Boys’ Club would one day become the Peninsula leader in
youth development with an operating budget of nearly $5 million.
New President Mike Gullard; directors Matt Sonsini and Connie Heldman
The club’s current period of strategy
development stands to benefit from
the management and civic experience
of its new board president, Mike
Gullard. After Stanford Business
School, Mike joined the Volunteers in
Service to America (VISTA), then
launched a career in telecommunications
with Intel. Later, he honed
finance and management talents in his
venture capital creation, Cornerstone Ventures. Now Mike is a professional
corporate board member, chairing and guiding Silicon
Valley startups. He and his wife Pamela have two sons, 19 and 21.
Matthew Sonsini, a partner at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich &
Rosati law firm, has joined the club board. In his professional
practice, he represents technology companies at all stages of
development and the institutions that finance them, from
formation through venture capital financing and beyond. As
a father of three, Matt is passionate about youth development
and expresses his determination to help the club
achieve its ambitious new goals. Connie Heldman’s career
in Marin real estate didn’t keep her from the Reading Wizards she founded at the
East Palo clubhouse. Her method has now been replicated nationally. She was
previously on the board and is now returning as a valued club activist. Connie is also
a national trustee of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and provides ongoing
mentoring and scholarship assistance for the club's young people and alumni.
Club partners with Stanford
to measure effectiveness
of youth development
No longer just a positive place for kids, but now a leader in
community strategies to improve youth outcomes, the club is
exploring ways to measure its effectiveness in changing the lives
of young members. Measurements weren’t part of the club’s original
modus operandi. Today, however, management and directors seek added
quantification of the success stories they’ve personally witnessed as a
result of the club’s bolder initiatives in the community. Such data would
also help show how well the organization stewards the money invested
by businesses and individuals with a real interest in youth outcomes.
To make it all happen, the club is partnering with the John W.
Gardner Center of Stanford University to measure how club programs
help young people achieve targeted academic and life-skill goals.
Executive Director Peter Fortenbaugh says the club hopes to
approach this by measuring the impact of attendance at clubhouses-and
for that more accurate data is needed. The Gardner Center houses
the Youth Data Archive, a rich database linking information from multiple
sources including school districts, county agencies, and youth
organizations like the club. YDA enables the creation of a tool with
which club staffers can evaluate how effective they are at achieving
their mission.
The database already includes attendance information from the club
and from the Redwood City Elementary School system, which most
Mervin G. Morris Clubhouse members attend. The Sequoia High
School System--which almost all members will eventually attend--will
Dr. Milbrey McLaughlin and
Peter Fortenbaugh meet on
the Stanford campus.
add its data next
year and talks are
underway to include
information from
the Ravenswood
Elementary School
system as well.
When all these
data sources are
complete, the club
will be able to evaluate
how regular
attendance at its clubhouses influences a range of desired outcomes:
performance on state-standardized tests, school attendance, discipline
problems, and eventually--and most importantly--high school graduation
rates.
Milbrey McLaughlin, founding director of the Gardner Center, has
joined the club board and is working with Peter Fortenbaugh,
Operations Director James Harris, board member Dennis Lenehan and
Gardner Center policy analyst Oded Gurantz, to integrate findings from
the Youth Data Archive into the club’s overall evaluation system.
According to Dr. McLaughlin, “the partnership is an important
experiment to evaluate how data-driven policy analysis can document
and improve the effectiveness of a youth development organization.”
Community Leader on board
Paul Bains, Pastor at St. Samuel Church in East Palo Alto, and a chaplain working
with the Police Department, has joined the club board of directors. For his
efforts in helping teens stay out of trouble, Paul was selected for the “Local Heroes
Award” by the Media Center in Palo Alto. He helped start the chaplaincy program
as part of Project We H.O.P.E which he and his wife, Cheryl, founded in
2000. The project (We Help Other People Exceed) counsels teens suspended
from schools, and works to help men recently released from prison to re-enter
society as productive citizens. Once the founder and president of a multi-milliondollar
company, Paul Bains gave it up to become pastor of St. Samuel and work
in the community--now in a multitude of projects, from teaching kids financial
realities to building gyms. He joined the Boys & Girls Clubs board “because I was
helped by the club as a kid over 30 years ago, and because I was recently surprised
to learn about all it’s doing to give youth a voice in improving our community.
They need to be heard.”
“News & Notes...Awards Video."
My name is Manuel Contreras.
I’m 18 years old. Growing up
poor in a poor neighborhood I
had to learn things the hard way. I
joined the gangs at 12 and was arrested
and locked up in my teens. I was
kicked out of schools in the district and
felt like I had no hope for the future. I was asked by my probation
officer to do community service at the Boys & Girls Club or else I
would have to spend more time in Juvy. During my time at the club
I built relationships with staff who really cared...they would push
me to excel in everything I did, to think of my future and to have
goals in life. Once I started doing well, the club offered me a job during
the summer. Their focus was to get me to finish high school and
enrolled in college. I have been attending Canada College and am a
nominee for the 2008 Youth of the Year at the Mervin G. Morris
clubhouse. The club has given me hope for the future.
CENTER FOR A NEW GENERATION TREASURE: Every visitor to a
clubhouse or CNG school campus says they make at least one
memorable discovery. Waiting to interview an adult tutor for this
issue of NextGen, the editor came upon Vien Nguyen, 15, (above
right) who had volunteered from Menlo School to teach what he
knows about music to younger kids. The son of Vietnamese who
had fled to the U.S. from the ravages of war in the 1970s, Vien
says music has been so important to him that he wanted to share
it with others. Some of his recorder pupils above: Evelia Rodriguez,
T’ea Graham and Dashawn Vercher, all 8-year-olds.
