October Meeting<br />

Don’t miss our October meeting when members, Mary and Michael Bates, will<br />

take us on a tour of the rose gardens of the South Island of New Zealand. The<br />

tour will begin in Christchurch, “Garden City of the World,” and will include the<br />

historic Christchurch Botanic <strong>Rose</strong> Garden originally established in 1909. Enjoy<br />

beautiful rose photography from great rose-breeding families such as Kordes,<br />

Harkness, Cocker, Dickson and, of course, New Zealand’s own beloved hybridizer,<br />

Sam McGredy. Visit a New Zealand <strong>Rose</strong> Show and see their favorite exhibition<br />

roses, ‘Paddy Stephens’ and ‘Raspberry Ice.’<br />

Michael and Mary fell in love with roses while traveling through New Zealand<br />

after completing their contracts for providing support to the U.S. Antarctic Research<br />

Program in the 1980’s.<br />

ARS Fall National Conference and <strong>Rose</strong> Show in Atlanta<br />

The rose societies of North Georgia (Greater Gwinnett, South Metro, Northeast<br />

Georgia, Northwest Georgia and Greater Atlanta) are hosting the Fall Conference<br />

and <strong>Rose</strong> Show October 7-11, Great <strong>Rose</strong>s in The South. Site of the event will be<br />

the Atlanta/Marietta Hilton, a newly renovated property on a golf course in historical<br />

Marietta. Close to the Marietta Square with easy access to Atlanta and<br />

points north, it’s the perfect place to pack in all the activities the weekend holds.<br />

Soak up some history, enjoy some sightseeing, sit in on workshops and the excellent<br />

programs on Friday and Saturday, exhibit (or not) in the show on Saturday<br />

and party hearty that night. Sunday’s garden tour will take us to four counties followed<br />

by the awards banquet in the evening. An all-day arrangements workshop<br />

or tour of Civil War sites rounds out the conference on Monday.<br />

Workshops Friday morning include one on photography (bring your camera), and<br />

one on society newsletters (bring recent copies of your newsletter). Those interested<br />

in quilting will be treated to a visit to three local quilt shops; or you can visit<br />

<strong>Rose</strong> Lawn, a Victorian home and gardens in Cartersville, Georgia. That afternoon,<br />

Deep South District’s Connie Vierbicky will entertain with “Austin Power:<br />

<strong>Rose</strong>s of International Intrigue;” Pat Henry of <strong>Rose</strong>s Unlimited will share<br />

“Exciting <strong>Rose</strong>s from Around the World;” and Dr. Robert Burns of the Greater<br />

Atlanta <strong>Rose</strong> <strong>Society</strong> will present a program on Eudora Welty’s garden, “A Legacy<br />

of Southern <strong>Rose</strong>s.”<br />

Saturday afternoon’s programs include “Developing <strong>Rose</strong>s Resistant to Foliar<br />

Diseases” by Mark Windham, professor and distinguished chair of ornamental<br />

pathology at the University of <strong>Tennessee</strong>; Tom Carruth of Weeks <strong>Rose</strong>s will<br />

make a presentation of roses he has hybridized; and a panel on building society<br />

memberships will be led by Baxter Williams. On Monday, Deep South District’s<br />

Sandy Dixon will conduct the modern arrangements workshop.<br />
