October Meeting
Don’t miss our October meeting when members, Mary and Michael Bates, will
take us on a tour of the rose gardens of the South Island of New Zealand. The
tour will begin in Christchurch, “Garden City of the World,” and will include the
historic Christchurch Botanic Rose Garden originally established in 1909. Enjoy
beautiful rose photography from great rose-breeding families such as Kordes,
Harkness, Cocker, Dickson and, of course, New Zealand’s own beloved hybridizer,
Sam McGredy. Visit a New Zealand Rose Show and see their favorite exhibition
roses, ‘Paddy Stephens’ and ‘Raspberry Ice.’
Michael and Mary fell in love with roses while traveling through New Zealand
after completing their contracts for providing support to the U.S. Antarctic Research
Program in the 1980’s.
ARS Fall National Conference and Rose Show in Atlanta
The rose societies of North Georgia (Greater Gwinnett, South Metro, Northeast
Georgia, Northwest Georgia and Greater Atlanta) are hosting the Fall Conference
and Rose Show October 7-11, Great Roses in The South. Site of the event will be
the Atlanta/Marietta Hilton, a newly renovated property on a golf course in historical
Marietta. Close to the Marietta Square with easy access to Atlanta and
points north, it’s the perfect place to pack in all the activities the weekend holds.
Soak up some history, enjoy some sightseeing, sit in on workshops and the excellent
programs on Friday and Saturday, exhibit (or not) in the show on Saturday
and party hearty that night. Sunday’s garden tour will take us to four counties followed
by the awards banquet in the evening. An all-day arrangements workshop
or tour of Civil War sites rounds out the conference on Monday.
Workshops Friday morning include one on photography (bring your camera), and
one on society newsletters (bring recent copies of your newsletter). Those interested
in quilting will be treated to a visit to three local quilt shops; or you can visit
Rose Lawn, a Victorian home and gardens in Cartersville, Georgia. That afternoon,
Deep South District’s Connie Vierbicky will entertain with “Austin Power:
Roses of International Intrigue;” Pat Henry of Roses Unlimited will share
“Exciting Roses from Around the World;” and Dr. Robert Burns of the Greater
Atlanta Rose Society will present a program on Eudora Welty’s garden, “A Legacy
of Southern Roses.”
Saturday afternoon’s programs include “Developing Roses Resistant to Foliar
Diseases” by Mark Windham, professor and distinguished chair of ornamental
pathology at the University of Tennessee; Tom Carruth of Weeks Roses will
make a presentation of roses he has hybridized; and a panel on building society
memberships will be led by Baxter Williams. On Monday, Deep South District’s
Sandy Dixon will conduct the modern arrangements workshop.
