Reaching out to inspire
a sense of community
Who Will Be Our Future Priests?

Within the last few months, we have lost two
long-time parish priests. Father Bob
Carden, a New Yorker who served for
many years in the Pueblo Diocese,
was much loved at St.
Joseph’s in Blende. Msgr.
Ervin Schmitt came to Pueblo
as a young farm boy, and was
best known for the founding
of Our Lady of the Meadows
church and later as pastor of
the Historic southside
churches.
It takes time and much
money to move seminarians
toward ordination. Among
Gerardo Martinez-Luna
our 2008 seminarians, Gerardo Martinez-Luna of
Mexico is doing his pastoral internship year in Alamosa
with Father Derrek Scott. He will be ordained a deacon
this year and is closest to the priesthood.
Michael Chrisman, well-known to Shrine parishioners,
is doing his pastoral internship in Monte Vista,
CO. and upon completion will return to the seminary
in Indiana for one more year.
Carl Wertin graduated
from Colorado State University-Pueblo
recently, and is beginning
his pre-theology
classes at St. Meinrad’s in Indiana.
He will have five more
years of classes.
Ambrose Muma of Kenya
is going to college at Colorado
State University-Pueblo this

year, and will eventually transfer
to a seminary.
Arturo Vargas of Grand
Junction, CO. has started college in Mexico, and hopes
to transfer to the seminary in a few years.
Andres Santiago is starting his fourth and final year
of theology in the Mexican seminary. He is being prepared
for the Pueblo Diocese along with some other
seminarians who will be assigned to the Denver and
Colorado Springs dioceses.

Pope Benedict XVI in his marvelous Encyclical, Save by Hope,
gives us a powerful teaching on the “last things.” He tells us:
The souls of the departed can receive “solace and refreshment”
through the Eucharist, prayer and almsgiving. The belief that love can
reach into the afterlife, that reciprocal giving and receiving is possible,
in which our affection for one another continues beyond the limits of
death—this has been a fundamental conviction of Christianity throughout
the ages and it remains a source of comfort today. Who would not
feel the need to convey to their departed loved ones a sign of kindness, a
gesture of gratitude or even a request for pardon?
No one lives alone. No one sins alone. No one is saved alone . . .As
Christians we should never limit ourselves to asking: how can I save
myself? We should also ask: “What can I do in order that others may
be saved and that for them too the star of hope may rise?”

Shrine Makes Quantum Leap into Computer Age
The world has been taken over by computers—
ah, yes, even our parish office has taken a quantum
leap into the electronic age! Just ask any of
the secretaries—Carol
Kristan, Janice Alfonso, or
Carol Scott, our bookkeeper-accountant—and
any one of them can tell
you about the office computer
and the importance
that it means in carrying
out the tasks of the office.
Mrs. Scott says she lives at
her computer.
And when trouble
rears its head, she quickly
calls for the parish’s computer
expert, former dentist
and long-time parishioner,
Dr. Don Creager,
who comes to the rescue
to keep the computers up

and running at the office as well as at St. Therese school.
Mrs. Scott gives much credit and appreciation to Dr.
Creager for his willingness and volunteering spirit to
share his expertise in maintaining the computer system.
The church offices uses Parish Data System, a program
designed especially for churches. All financial
accounts, including weekly collections, and bills due
and paid are recorded. The parish census of families
and enrollment for religious education classes are just
one click away. Death
records are kept for four
years and then placed in
the archives.
Worried about baptismal
records? Not to worry.
They are kept in a large
record book in the parish
office. Once a year, these
baptismal records, as well
as other important records
and information, is sent to
the diocesan office for permanent
record keeping.
The ministry schedule
for the year and the weekly
bulletin, written and
planned by Carol Kristan,
is all keyed into the computer
data base, and then
sent over the internet for printing to the Paluch Co.
When computers are down in the office, work temporarily
crawls to a stop, but telephones still ring. Nevertheless,
the Shrine office has come into the computer

Alex Ivan Plays Piano Accompaniment at Mass
Shrine parishioners enjoyed the beautiful piano
music at Sunday Masses this summer
played with enthusiasm by a tall, nicely
dressed young man. He is Alex Ivan.
Alex is the son
of Alysia (Abbate)
and Ron Ivan, Jr.
Both of his parents
grew up in the
Shrine parish. His
grandparents are
Connie and Ron
Ivan and Florence
and Warren Abbate.
He has a younger
sister, Tessa, age 9,
who attends John
Neumann school.
Alex returned to
Baylor University at
Waco, Texas this
school year to continue
his studies.
He is a senior with
a double major in
political science and
economics.
No, he is not
studying music, but
practices the piano
at least once a week.
Playing the piano
helps keep him
sane, and gives him
release from the
pressures of his
studies and inner
peace, he says.

He plays one
weekend Mass at St. Peters’ Parish in Waco.
He said he loves playing the piano and started
playing “by ear” when he was about three years
old. Lessons began in the first grade and continued
for 14 years. He has been playing accompaniment
and solos at the Shrine for about three or four
years, whenever he is available, and home on break
from college.
This summer Alex was inspired to compose a
simple Agnus Dei hymn for use at the Shrine
Masses. Agnus Dei, means “Lamb of God, you take
away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.”

day, perhaps, he
says.
How did Alex
like going to
Baylor University,
a prestigious Baptist
School?
“Baylor,” he
said, “was not his
first choice, but
with incentives,
he decided to try
it.” He thought he
was being
thrown to the wolves, but was pleasantly surprised.
The school was open to all and respectful of students
of different faiths.
Students live in a Christian atmosphere. There
is a strong Catholic presence in organizations on
campus, and Catholics make up the second largest
denomination. �

Totus Tuus Sum
The purpose of Totus Tuus program is to bring children and youth into a deeper relationship with Christ, the
Blessed Mother, and the Church. This is accomplished through the enthusiastic witness given by the welltrained
college students who draw the participants into these Mysteries by instructing through songs, skits,
illustrations, Mass preparation, recitation of the Rosary, 10 Commandments and recreation, according to
Sarah Nelson, coordinator of the program for the parish.
Among the many rewarding aspects of the Program, is the amazing participation we receive each summer.
For many participants, the Totus Tuus Program is a highlight of their summer holidays, and one that is eagerly
anticipated each summer. The greatest gift of all though, is the knowledge that the participants receive
authentic, orthodox teachings of the Church, and that is something for which all families can rejoice!

Day
All Souls Day is when the Church commemorates and
prays for the holy souls in Purgatory, undergoing purification
of their sins before entering heaven.

Zugelders Attend Bishop’s Installation
No one was more surprised than Joan Zugelder when her name
was picked for the top prize in June in the parish raffle. Joan held
the $1,000. check and said, Why did I win this? What is this for?”
There were no answers, so she tucked the money in savings.
In July, her daughter, Sister Faustina came home for her two
week vacation. Sister received a phone call from her mother-superior
in Waltan, KY notifying her that the sisters had received an invitation
to Bishop David Ricken’s installation ceremonies in Green
Bay Wisconsin. Bishop Ricken was leaving the Diocese of Cheyenne
to become bishop in Green Bay. He had previously served as
a parish priest in the Diocese of Pueblo for many years.
The phone call was to find out if Sister Faustina would be available
to represent their congregation at the ceremony since the other
sisters would be back at the regular teaching positions at the time of
the installation.
Frank Zugelder, husband of Joan, hunkered down on his computer
and discovered he could get three round trip air plane tickets
for $1,000.
Joan smiled. She knew now the answer for the raffle win! �

First Catholic Church in Qatar
Catholics in the predominantly Muslim Arab country
of Qatar are celebrating the establishment of the first
Catholic church in the region. Capuchin Father
Tomasito Veneracion, parish priest of Our Lady of the
Rosary Church, called the construction and opening of
the new church a “historic event.”
For decades, Christians in Qatar had to practice their
faith in cramped garages, private homes and in foreign
schools and
prefabricated
halls.
In April
2003 the government
of
the small
Persian Gulf
nation overwhelmingly
approved a new constitution that guaranteed freedom
of expression, religion, assembly and association, and
the country’s ruler donated land to Christian groups to
build churches.
However, no Christian symbols may publicly be
displayed; no exterior cross or bell tower is allowed. �
