Pasta for Pennies
fundraiser
Burnett Elementary re-
cently supported the Olive
Garden’s 14th annual Pasta
for Pennies program benefiting
the Leukemia and
Lymphona Society.
The program, which
took place over a threeweek
period, encouraged
students and teachers to
collect spare change to
support the society’s mission
to cure leukemia,
lymphoma, myeloma and
Hodgkin’s disease and to
improve the quality of life
of patients and their families.
This was a tremendous
opportunity for children to
demonstrate their passion
for supporting classmates
and families in their local
community. They learned
at a young age how important
and fulfilling community
service can be.
As an incentive to participate,
the top fundraising
class will receive an
Olive Garden Hospitaliano!
Lunch (pasta party)
in their classroom.
This year’s winner was
Pam Finklea’s third-grade
class which raised $350.84.
The top fundraising student
was Molly Thrasher,
who donated $192 to the
program.
As an additional incentive,
Principal Cynthia
Henderson agreed to be
duct taped to the gymnasium
wall by every child
who donated a dollar bill.
Girl Scouts donate to troops
Local Girl Scout Troop 8522 is currently collecting Girl Scout Cookies and
other items to donate to U.S. soldiers abroad.
In addition to cookies, sought items include medicines, snacks, coffee and tea,
toiletries, batteries, books and magazines, bug repellent (wipes), CDs and DVDs,
gloves, extension cords, 1-inch paintbrushes and dental tools (for cleaning weapons),
dry skin lotion, baseballs, Frisbees and hacky sacks, eye drops, personal
fans, prepaid phone cards, pipe cleaners, playing cards, sunscreen, warm wool
hats, Ziploc-type bags, pens, pencils and stationery supplies.
The group has made arrangements with Ellington Field officials to ship the
items for free. Items may be dropped off at the South Belt-Ellington Leader
office, all Ron Carter auto dealerships and Reflex Gymnastics and Cheer
Academy in Pearland through Monday, March 30.
For more information or a complete list of desired items, contact Kristi
Gartman at 281-484-7435 or 832-428-4303.
School, and his wife, Cyndee. They are the children of Kai and Cheryl Patrick
of La Porte.
Winners of the pasta party, Pam Finklea’s thirdgrade
class shown are, (front row) Andrea Mujica,
