From the Desk of Fr. Mark
Hi to all of you.
I am still smiling as I am remembering a very warm
Christmas Barn Mass. Being warm on the outside made
for a large turnout on the inside of the barn. Close to 500
people showed up for this annual celebration. There is
something special about this gathering. The coolness and
the number of people make people sit close
together. Straw bales, intending to seat two, made room
for three. Bales, which were intended for the barn cats,
became seats for children. Low lighting, meant for lowing
cattle, became ambiance of a gentle, peaceful
night. Christmas carols did not miss a beat, as a calf bellowed
in the background. Music provided by drums, a guitar
and accordion were accompanied by the songs of hearts,
as people from as far away as Minnesota joined together to
celebrate the Lord's life from birth to resurrection. The
simple setting of a barn reminded many of the simple message
of the Savior: God's presence is seen most clearly
when seen through the eyes of love. God's love was sent to
us in the simplicity of His Son, born in an ordinary stable,
rather than a palace. A barn Mass is a good setting to catch
the Christmas spirit. A big thanks to all who attended, who
helped create such a wonderful setting, who opened their
hearts to God's love. A big thanks to the Kahle family,
who gave up their barn and opened their hearts to people
from all over, to celebrate the Lord's presence. There was
room in the inn, in a barn, just West of Kalida.
Besides the barn Mass, there have been many ways that
people have been preparing for the Lord's birth. Many
people have been behind the scenes to donate to help people
have a good Christmas. From children bringing in
canned goods or toys, to anonymous adults who buy shoes
for a family...the Christmas spirit is here. The choirs are
practicing their Christmas songs to help our parishes give
praise to the Newborn King. With a couple of days before
Christmas, let those days belong to the Lord, the true gift
of Christmas. See you in church. Fr. Mark
