NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME 2023 The National Garden Scheme has been running for almost 100 years and is still going strong. Over 3,500 private gardens open in support of some of UK’s best loved nursing and health charities including Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Parkinson’s UK, Carers Trust, the Queen’s Nursing Institute and Hospice UK. In 2022, money was raised at garden gates and through the sale of tea, cakes and plants and the National Garden Scheme was able to donate a record £3.11 million to its beneficiary charities. Here is a taster of some of the gardens you can visit in the area. For details of additional gardens, dates, opening times, entry costs, refreshments and home-made teas please visit www.ngs.org.uk. Ivy Croft IVY CROFT Ivington Green, Leominster, HR6 0JN Each Wednesday from July 5 - October 11, & Saturday 2 & Sunday 3 September Now over 25 years old, the garden shows signs of maturity, including some surprising trees. A very wide range of plants is displayed, blending with the countryside and providing habitat for wildlife. The cottage is surrounded by borders, raised beds, trained pear trees and containers giving all year interest. Paths lead to the wider garden which include mixed borders, vegetables framed with espalier apples. Burford House Gardens BURFORD HOUSE GARDENS Burford House, Burford, Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire WR15 8HQ Saturday 3 & Sunday 4 September The garden is currently being restored by the Garden Angels (volunteers) under the leadership of the newly appointed Head Gardener. 4-acres of sweeping lawns bordered by the River Teme, with serpentine borders, set in the beautiful Teme Valley, around an elegant Georgian House (open for teas). Designed by the Mantoft MANTOFT Upper End, Eckington WR10 3DQ (Formerly The Croft) - This is a wonderful ancient, thatched cottage with 1½ acres of magical gardens. An enclosed pond with rare ducks and ghost koi. Cotswold and red brick walls, large topiary, treehouse with seating, summerhouse and dovecote, pathways, vistas and stone statues, urns and herbaceous borders. Recently featured in Cotswold Life - a garden which should not be missed. Refreshments in aid of Compassion in World Farming. This garden opens ‘By Arrangement’ from now to September 2023 for groups of between 5 and 30. Visitors are welcomed on pre-agreed dates. Please contact the garden owner to discuss your requirements and arrange a date for a group or bespoke visit. THE DELL HOUSE 2 Green Lane, Malvern Wells, Worcestershire WR14 4HU Sunday 27 August, Sunday 8 October This garden also opens ‘By Arrangement’ from now to December 2023 for groups of between 1 and 20. Please contact the owner to make arrangements. Two-acre wooded hillside garden of the 1830s former rectory, now a B&B. Peaceful and natural, the garden contains many magnificent specimen The Dell House trees including a Wellingtonia Redwood. Informal in style with meandering bark paths, historic garden buildings, garden railway and a paved terrace with outstanding views. Rest Harrow REST HARROW California Lane, Welland, Malvern, Worcestershire, WR13 6NQ Saturday 2 & Sunday 3 September This garden opens’ By Arrangement’ until September 2023 for groups of between 10 and 99. 1½ acres developed over 15 years with a 5-acre wildflower meadow, woodland and stunning views of the Malvern Hills. Colourful and diverse flower beds, unusual plants, roses, alstroemeria, stocks and shrubs. Potager kitchen garden, fruit trees and rustic trellis made from pollarded trees.
