23 JUNE 2023 |Opinion 07opinionThought Leadership article by Masibongwe Sihlahla,by Chairperson: CYPFSA, YRC and fellow at Youth Business ChainRacist propaganda must not be allowed to undermine South Africa’s democracyThe legal matter between amaBhunganeand the Moti Grouptriggers a serious question – inwhose interest is South Africanmedia acting?Black people were treated as third-classcitizens in the land of their birth for over300 years, and yet, 29 years after thedawn of our democracy, many membersof the media are still allowed to continuetheir campaign to spread racist propagandaagainst black excellence and progress. As the representatives of over 220,000members and supporters nationwide, theConcerned Young People’s Forum ofSouth Africa (CYPFSA) will thereforebe uniting behind the Moti Group and itsCEO Dondo Mogajane as it stands up tomedia injustice. As the youth of SouthAfrica, we cannot stand by and watch asblack business leaders are underminedwhile the media attempt to lower theirstatus in the eyes of the youth and publicwhen positive black role models are nowneeded more than ever. For example, in a blatant demonstrationof disrespect, certain radio presenters onstations such as RSG often call PresidentRamaphosa, the First Citizen ofour country, by his first name, “Cyril”.Additionally, President Ramaphosa andother government ministers are routinelymocked in newspapers and on-air, andmade to appear inept, with the sly insinuationthat black people are stupid. One of the easiest ways for racists tocontinue the legacy of apartheid is byHospital looking fordeceased familyEscourt Hospital in KZN has informedthe Free State Department ofHealth of Mariti Tsietsi Isaac whosedead body is being kept at EscourtHospital. It is suspected that this individualmay be from the Free State butpassed away at the hospital in KZN.The department asks for the public’shelp in informing the family of the deceased. The body will be buried asa pauper if no positive identification ismade within 30 days.undermining the character and actions ofblack leaders.By persistently mocking and underminingblack businesspeople and otherprominent black figures, the messagesent to youth is that blacks are incompetentand corrupt, and that only whites arepeople of character. This mentality is all too prevalentamongst those who grew up duringapartheid and enjoyed its benefits. Thisis especially true of those journalists whoare now spreading their propaganda in amanner that only seems legitimate, falselyclaiming to be fighting corruption anddefending constitutional rights to makethemselves look honourable.Their motto seems to be that if you throwenough mud at black businessmen, someof it will eventually stick. Yet in their onslaughtagainst the Moti Group, amaBhungane,Daily Maverick, and News24have failed to make their case stick. It islittle wonder that the courts have alreadysupported the Moti Group and CEODondo Mogajane, who has proven hisintegrity over and over again, much tothe chagrin of his enemies. As the matterof media abuse continues to be heardby the courts, Mogajane and the MotiGroup can rely on the active support ofthe 200,000+ members of the ConcernedYoung People Forums of SA, YouthRising Campaign and Youth BusinessChain, an umbrella body of youth ownedbusinesses and small enterprises. If anyone is corrupt, they should certainlybe taken to task. But sadly, in manycases, it seems that black businessmenare attacked and undermined becausethey are black – and even worse, successful. It reeks of desperation that amedia house like amaBhungane, underthe leadership of white editor, Sam Sole, and Media24 under its white Groupeditor Adriaan Basson, have publishedstories based on unreliable documentsobtained in an illegal manner as part of acoordinated assault on black excellence.Worse, it has been allowed to spin morepropaganda, painting its actions as partof a war on media freedom, when thereal battle is being fought to revive SouthAfrica’s economy by supporting emergingentrepreneurs. Sole and Basson arethe same bigots who have demonstrateda clear vendetta against esteemed leadersJulius Malema, Robert Gumede, the Ministerof Police, Black First Land First, and all black leaders and organisations.Too many members of the media arebeing used as a weapon against blackowners, companies, and individuals, whoplay a crucial role in the empowermentand transformation of our country. Thesereactionary forces are a danger to ourdemocracy – forces who have overseaspassports and no loyalty to South Africa, caring only about their profits. An injustice anywhere is an injustice everywhere, and this is no truer than whatis happening in South Africa. The actionsof a small group of irresponsible journalistsmust not be allowed to underminethe good work that the government andblack leaders are doing to bring aboutsocial cohesion. We are all citizens in thiscountry, and only by working togethercan we make South Africa a better placefor all people, whether black or white.Given the Group’s role in the developmentalfield of Africa as a whole, and theimportant role it is playing in supportingthe South African economy and jobcreation, I therefore call upon all progressiveformations to rally behind MotiGroup in defence of black progress.
