As America cont<strong>in</strong>ues to prosecute the war on terrorism, two historians have<br />

moved on to command artillery and reconnaissance units <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Mar<strong>in</strong>e</strong> Corps Reserves<br />

and are either prepar<strong>in</strong>g to deploy or are currently serv<strong>in</strong>g abroad. Others have aga<strong>in</strong><br />

returned to active duty at the <strong>Mar<strong>in</strong>e</strong> Corps Historical Center, some from retirement, to<br />

accomplish tasks rang<strong>in</strong>g from the writ<strong>in</strong>g of monographs to document<strong>in</strong>g ongo<strong>in</strong>g<br />

operations <strong>in</strong> Afghanistan, Haiti, and <strong>Iraq</strong>. We also have several new historians, one<br />

recently demobilized after hav<strong>in</strong>g fought his way to Baghdad as part of the 4th Light<br />

Armored Reconnaissance battalion. One of those return<strong>in</strong>g historians is Lieutenant<br />

Colonel Nathan S. Lowrey charged with creat<strong>in</strong>g this guide to the material collected<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the first phase of OIF.<br />

Lieutenant Colonel Lowrey, and <strong>in</strong>fantry officer, attended the University of<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong>e before be<strong>in</strong>g commissioned <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Mar<strong>in</strong>e</strong> Corps <strong>in</strong> 1985. He subsequently jo<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

3d Battalion, 4th <strong>Mar<strong>in</strong>e</strong>s at Camp Lejeune, North Carol<strong>in</strong>a and was deployed to Panama<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Operation</strong> Just Cause. In 1991, follow<strong>in</strong>g a successful tour at Recruit<strong>in</strong>g Station<br />

Portland, Oregon he transferred to the <strong>Mar<strong>in</strong>e</strong> Corps Reserves and 2d Battalion, 24th<br />

<strong>Mar<strong>in</strong>e</strong>s. Lieutenant Colonel Lowrey has been with the <strong>History</strong> and Museums Division<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce 1998, deploy<strong>in</strong>g as a field historian dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong><strong>Operation</strong>s</strong> Jo<strong>in</strong>t Guardian, Endur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Freedom</strong>, and <strong>Iraq</strong>i <strong>Freedom</strong>. He recently received his Ph.D. <strong>in</strong> Archaeology from<br />

American University and, <strong>in</strong> addition to organiz<strong>in</strong>g data collected dur<strong>in</strong>g OIF II, is<br />

currently research<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Mar<strong>in</strong>e</strong> Corps operations <strong>in</strong> Afghanistan.<br />
