How to styleyour sweaters forsweater weatherAlex Allan (he/him)Illustration: Alissa ChallisWhen we look at significant piecesof clothing that we might use on aday to day basis, we might think of socksor underwear. Here in Canada though,sweaters could definitely fall into thiscategory as well. Three students fromFanshawe’s fashion design program believethat wearing sweaters all year round isperfectly acceptable, but added that it allcomes down to how you style your sweater.“I think layering is the key when playingaround with the style. You have the sweaterbut you have all the other pieces that gowith it too,” second-year fashion designstudent Mayumi Brilhante said.Another second-year fashion designstudent Chloe Nguyen mentioned thatthere is a trend of wearing sweaters in thesummertime.“You can add see-through open knitswith bikinis, crop tops or even a dress ontop of it,” Nyguyen said.This does depend on how the weather isoutside as well as the type of season we arein. Ngyuen said that there are also someclassic styles you can go with.“The V-neck sweater is also cute andthen you can layer with a shirt inside andthat would help show the colour aroundthe collar,” she said.Brilhante is from Brazil and Ngyuenis from Vietnam. Since they both grewup in hotter countries, when the coldertemperatures come around, they said thatthey tend to grab a thicker or warmersweater.Third-year student, Biz Clarkson,however, grew up in Canada.“[So] I get warm very easily,” Clarksonsaid. “Personally, I would have a sweaterversus a thicker hoodie and then I wouldlayer on top of my sweater if needed.”The group mentioned that they havebeen seeing a trend of more bright colours.“It was really bright colours after theCOVID lockdowns and more people weregoing out and being social,” Clarkson said.Now, however, Clarkson said they’renoticing a move away from neon andbright colours.“It’s now an icy pastel style coming in,it’s not as close to a baby duck colour but aslightly more elevated pastel,” Clarkson said.There was a debate amongst the studentsfor when you can state that we are officiallyin a sweater weather season.“Mine is not until October,” Clarkson said.“I would say around September for me,”Brilhante said.“For me it would be October,” Nguyen said.Around the fall seems to be where thegroup said they see more people wearingsweaters around. With the style of brightercolours on trend, there is a style that theybelieve you can’t get away from in sweaterweather season.“You’re never going to get away fromthe rust or leaves colours in fall,” Clarksonsaid. “But I think that’s why it’s interestingwhen you can have more spring or vibrantcolours but in the fall on sweaters.”Even though bright colours might stillbe ‘in’ around sweater weather time, thereis a key piece the group mentioned whenstyling your sweater.“People are still using layers to style insweater weather time,” Nguyen said.“You can pair the sweater with a blackcoat or a leather jacket but then you stillhave a bright coloured sweater underneathit,” Clarkson said.Nguyen said that this style is a nice wayto wear your sweaters in the fall as it helpsto “mute” the bright colour down.“So when it’s raining and gross outsideyou’re not like, ‘Here I am in my brightpink sweater,’” Clarkson said.The three of them believe that the rustcolouredlook around sweater weatherseason is the classic style everyone goes for.“I also feel that people think they haveto,” Clarkson said.“Almost as if it’s a code to follow like, youcan’t wear a white sweater in the winter,”Brilhante said.“I feel that this is kind of a stereotypicalthing,” Nguyen said.Rather than follow the agreed-uponstandards, Clarkson pushed for spontaneitywith your style.“I really like to pair sweaters with do-ityourself(DIY) vests,” they said. “I will putspikes on them kind of like what they do inthe metal scene. You have your battle jacketsI do but I make them in a nerdy style.”Brilhante also suggested trying outthe monochromatic look. This is whensomeone will only choose to wear onecolour style for a look.“Most people would do this style all inblack but I would spice it up with someblack leggings but it is a classic look,”Brilhante said.There is a whole other extreme side to thespectrum too when styling your sweaters.“This would be total pattern clashing,almost like you rolled around in your closetand said this is great, let’s go,” Clarkson said.A lot comes into play when styling yoursweater for sweater weather. These savvyfashion students also emphasized thataccessorizing with your sweater can help thestyle. They also recommended checking outyour local thrift stores if you are looking forsome new sweaters.34
