Cubs EscapadeFor cubs a district cub camp in June is a usual part of theprogramme, but in 2023 we joined the all sections districtcamp ESCAPADE ’23 so not only were we camping withcubs from the whole of Esher District but also withbeavers, scouts and explorers too.We arrived at Walton Firs as usual on the Thursday andpitched tents for the cubs who were joining us for thewhole weekend including 2 nights camping. We hadfeared, due to leader availability that we would have tocap the number of cubs who camped, but this did nothappen, and along with the cubs who joined us for the dayon Saturday we had a total of 50 cubs attend.The camp officially started with a camp opening on Fridayevening and after some film shorts everybody settled intheir camp sites for a night’s “sleep”. (Does anybodysleep well the first night on camp?) On Saturday, once theday visitors and beavers were on site we had a FlagParade and Welcome with a flag bearer from each sectionon camp following the 3 rd Molesey Band into the arena. Itwas then time for the activities to start – all the Walton Firson-site activities were available including climbing, cavingand crate stacking, the District had bought in a series ofGiant inflatables including “ Last Man Standing” andHuman Table Football, and each group provided 2 or 3activities – some adventurous, some craft based and ofcourse the opportunity to do backwoods cooking ofvarious types. 1 st Claygate provided an aerial runway ( runby the Troop and Explorer leaders), stomp rockets (run bythe Beaver leaders), and key ring making (run by the cubleaders). There were two sessions, morning and eveningand the cubs are allowed to go around the site with their friendsand do whatever activities they want- although one or twoactivities are age restricted. For those who managed to collectten different stamps for completing 10 different activities anEscapade 23 woggle could be claimed from camp HQ and it wasquite surprising how early in the day some cubs managed toclaim their woggle.After a day of activities and a welcome supper of pastabolognese our day visitors departed. There was then a concerton the main stage, followed by a camp fire and a firework displaybefore everybody returned to their sites for another night’s sleepready for more activities on the Sunday morning. Following flagbreak, the cubs took part in cargo net tug of war and volleyball,and the Walton firs activities were again open. Then the 1 stClaygate Band marched around the site collecting everybody oncamp for a Scouts Own and Closing Ceremony and the end ofcamp. We ran our usual tent competition to support the cubs inlooking after themselves the equipment and their property atcamp, ( and not to disturb others overnight) and as always thetop sixes were separated by a whisker.A camp of this size is not possible without the significant efforts of
a large number of people – including volunteerleaders at Group and District level and parentvolunteers, and huge thanks to everybody whocontributed, both to the planning which started earlyin the year, getting kit out on Wednesday to puttingthe kit away on Sunday. Giving up your time is verymuch appreciated. Not least by the cubsthemselves. The central catering team ensured wehad plenty of drinks on a hot, dry weekend, whenthis was essential, as well as food – thank-you.Thank you to all those mentioned in the reports bythe other sections attending the camp and thankyou to the cub leaders and parents who supportedthe camp in whatever capacity including Catherine,Sue, Alistair, Rob, Jeremy, Claire, Phil, Liana, Sam,Gerry, Lizzie, Amanda, Adrian, John-Kai and Steve.
