8 NAMAKWA DISTRICT Natural resources and competitive advantages Namakwa has the minerals the world needs to go green. Copper and zinc are among the important minerals needed to drive the green energy revolution. The Namakwa District has these and other minerals in abundance, in addition to which it has the wind and solar resources to drive the renewable energy that is needed to create another of the world’s favourite resources of the moment, green hydrogen. When Spanish company Abengoa chose to partner with the Industrial Development Corporation to build South Africa’s first concentrated solar plant (CSP), they chose a spot north-east of the Namakwa town of Pofadder in the Khai-Mai Local Municipality. KaXu Solar One is a 100MW parabolic trough plant and covers an area of 1 100 hectares. The second site chosen by these investment partners for another CSP is nearby on the N14. This became the R9.4-billion Xina Solar One project. The Northern Cape is the natural home for the generation of solar power. Long-term annual direct normal irradiance (DNI) at Upington is 2 816kWh/m 2 , according to a survey done for Stellenbosch University by Slovakian company GeoModal Solar. South Africa’s national average is among the best in the world. So far, approximately 60% of the solar projects allocated in the national Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) have been in the nation’s sunniest province. Namakwa’s wind resources are equally impressive. In addition to the huge Loeriesfontein Wind Farm in the centre of the district, the 147MW Roggeveld Wind Farm extends from the southern edge of the district into the Western Cape. A Renewable Energy Directorate is to be established by the Provincial Government of the Northern Cape to assist local and district municipalities to create revenue streams related to renewable energy. Four of the 11 Renewable Energy Development Zones (REDZs) planned for South Africa are located in the Northern Cape. REDZs will encourage localisation through the development of manufacturing hubs that can make components for the sector. Planned Special Economic Zones (SEZs) such as the Namkwa SEZ will complement this trend. The key project at the heart of the Namakwa SEZ is being operated by Vedanta Zinc International. The national significance of the zinc mine can be seen in the fact that the IDC has identified key opportunities for the national economy on the path to zinc industrialisation. These include fertiliser phospates, zinc-coated steel and battery storage (zinc is cheaper than lithium) when deployed in battery technology. There is potential for a copper smelter plant in the Namakwa SEZ which would further stimulate exploration and mining. Copper 360 was formed in November 2022 and the company has revived a mine in Nababeep in response to the rising global demand for copper. Founded in 1860 by the Okiep Mining Company, Nababeep is just north of Springbok. Agriculture is largely focussed on the rearing of large numbers of sheep, some of which are of the fat-tailed variety, and goats. Karakul pelts are a speciality of the KLK agricultural group and command high prices at local and international auctions.
LOCAL MUNICIPALITIES A warm welcome awaits visitors to Namakwa’s towns The thing that unites the towns and villages of the Namakwa District Municipality is the friendliness of the welcome visitors receive. From the chilly charms of Sutherland stargazing on the plateau in winter to lashings of meat served at the Hantam Vleisfees, outsiders are soon made to feel at home. HANTAM LOCAL MUNICIPALITY • Towns: Brandvlei, Calvinia, Loeriesfontein, Middelpos, Nieuwoudtville, Onderste Doorns Hantam LM is the largest municipality in the district. The chief town is Calvinia, which has a good aerodrome and hosts the famed Hantam Vleisfees (Meat Festival). Niewoudtville is the site of a rooibos tea factory and the Hantam National Botanical Garden with 500 000 endemic Bulbinella. The Fred Turner Museum at Loeriesfontein has an impressive wind pump collection. KAMIESBERG LOCAL MUNICIPALITY • Garies, Hondeklip Bay, Kamieskroon, Koingnaas, Leliefontein, Kamiesberg The ocean defines the western border of this local municipality but water has to taken from the ground for consumption. Springs and windmills generate what water there is but the varied geographical landscape makes for fascinating plant life. Sandveld (at the coast), Hardeveld (on the plateau) and mountains create conditions for Mountain Renosterveld, Succulent Karoo, False Succulent Karoo and Namaqualand Broken Veld. KAROO HOOGLAND LOCAL MUNICIPALITY • Frasersburg, Sutherland, Williston The high altitude of this local municipality, reflected in its name, makes for wonderful stargazing and very cold winters on the plateau. The other factor which helps the astronomers is that the towns are far apart, making for the clear skies needed for optical telescopes to function well. Sutherland hosts telescopes. Fraserburg’s hexagonal stone bell tower was built in 1861 and has been a library, an office for the market master and a private office for the local magistrate. Williston is primarily known for sheep farming. KHAI-MA LOCAL MUNICIPALITY • Aggeneys, Pella, Pofadder The headquarters of the local municipality are in Pofadder. The London Missionary Society was initially active in the town of Pella, where a spring made a settlement possible. The Orange River is a few miles north. The Roman Catholic Church is a provincial heritage site. Aggeneys is the site of a giant zinc-mining project and Klein Pella is the largest date-exporting farm in the Southern Hemisphere. NAMA KHOI LOCAL MUNICIPALITY • Bulletrap, Carolusberg, Concordia, Kleinzee, Komaggas, Nababeep, Okiep, Springbok, Steinkopf Springbok is the administrative centre of the district and a popular destination for tourists who use it as a stepping stone to explore various parts of the Namkwa District and the national and provincial parks and reserves. RICHTERSVELD LOCAL MUNICIPALITY • Alexander Bay, Eksteensfontein, Kuboes, Port Nolloth, Richtersveld, Sanddrift The Richtersveld contains harsh landscapes but their stark beauty attracts tourists in large numbers. The coastal area, which includes Alexander Bay and Port Nolloth, used to be involved in diamond mining but is now being considered for development as part of the Blue Economy and for the export of minerals and the manufacture of green hydrogen. The Orange River enters the Atlantic Ocean at Alexander Bay.
