Lake Cleanup (cont’d.)
Fred Lubnow of Princeton Hydro LLC, the lake’s
environmental consultant.
This system is similar in theory to the aeration
system installed in 2020 in Hopatcong’s Crescent
Cove, Lubnow said. The difference is the
aeration system in Crescent Cove adds oxygen
to the water as it stirs the entire water column,
and the oxygenation system injects oxygen into
the bottom layer of the water.
Hopatcong Mayor Michael Francis said the
Crescent Cove aeration project has shown clear
results.
“There were ice fishermen in the cove and
herring have been jumping, something that had
not happened for many years,” Francis said.
The future of the lake was a concern for
Catalini Forero of Mount Arlington, who, with
her son Matiis, 9, joined the cleanup crew at the
borough’s beach.
“He’s part of the next generation who will be
using and taking care of the lake,” she said.
Additional members of that next generation
are sisters Katheryn Hand, 15, and Allison Hand,
17, of Mount Arlington.
While Katheryn struggled to keep her
sneakers on as she trudged through the thick
muck, Allison said they use the local beach
often, and she will walk out onto the lake when
the ice is solid.
“This is our beach,” she said.
The highlight for the Hand
sisters: They collected the pink
Croc.
Mount Arlington Mayor
Michael Stanzilis said someone
should present them with the
“Pink Croc Award.”
Top to bottom, clockwise: The skeleton of a
wooden boat was discovered by volunteers in
Kingsland and can be seen in the muck just
offshore in Landing Channel. Volunteers pose
Island. (Photo courtesy of Linda Karpiak.) Kathy
muck near the public beach in Mount Arlington.
