OPPORTUNITIES FOR MINISTRY This neighborhood study is designed to stimulate creative and effective ministry outreach to Windy Hills. Rather than dictate or suggest the ministry opportunities, we decided to present this study to numerous groups at Sojourn East and welcome reflection and discussion. With your leadership team or community group, consider the following questions and report your ideas to the staff and elders (east@sojournchurch.com). 1. What most surprised you about Windy Hills? Is there anything you would add to this study from your own experience of the neighborhood? 2. How might knowledge of the city and its history and values affect the way you relate to its residents? How might it change the way you lead ministries or inhabit the community? 3. What do you see as the major barriers (neighborhood practices, culture or perceptions that inhibit the progress of the gospel) to Windy Hills residents coming to Christ and joining a healthy church? 4. What sorts of bridges (opportunities for people to encounter the truth of the gospel) might we as a church build to overcome those barriers? 5. What are some ideas you have for serving or reaching the populations below? What types of outreach ministries or events do you think would be most effective in general? MONTHLY PRAYER GUIDE JANUARY Ask God to move in the hearts of his people here at Sojourn East and press us towards a posture of outreach and service and the genuine welfare of others. FEBRUARY Pray for God to reveal to us where he is already at work so that we can join in what he is already doing in our church and neighborhood. MARCH Confess before God our anxieties regarding outreach in our neighborhood. Ask God to grant us everything we need for following in Paul’s pattern of life on mission in Windy Hills. APRIL Pray God’s kingdom come and will be done in Windy Hills as it is in heaven. MAY Pray for God to help our church to see our neighborhood’s significance through his eyes shedding preconceived notions of where he has placed our church building. JUNE Pray for the elderly, widows and the lonely in Windy Hills and for opportunities to reach and serve them. JULY Pray for other churches and organizations in our area who are also reaching out with the gospel. AUGUST Ask God to take specific struggles that are specific to Windy Hills that are meant for evil and turn them for good. 18
