The capital, with more than 30 museums, is considered the 'city of museums', as most of them are located in the historic city centre. The Museo Picasso de Málaga, the Centre Pompidou, the Museo Carmen Thyssen and the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo (better known as the CAC Málaga) are some of the most significant museums to be found in the city. At the moment, the Museo Carmen Thyssen is hosting "Latent Modernity": an exhibition of renovating artists who were forged mainly in the first half of the 20th century in which we can see avant-garde works by Juan Gris, Daniel Vázquez Diaz, María Blanchard, Francisco Bores, Pablo Picasso or Carmen Laffón among others. For its part, the Centre Pompidou in Malaga, located in the building known as El Cubo, between Piers 1 and 2 of the city's port, in a privileged location overlooking the waters of the Bay of Malaga, offers a permanent tour of several dozen works from the Centre Pompidou's incomparable collection, inviting the public to explore the art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It usually presents 2 to 3 thematic or monographic temporary exhibitions a year exploring the different segments of the collection (photography, design, architecture and video). The experience will be lived through multidisciplinary programmes dedicated to dance, performance, the spoken word and film. Since 19 March the rooms of the Buenavista Palace that house the Picasso Museum of Málaga have been hosting the seventh remodelling of the art gallery's collection in its twenty years of existence. Around a hundred and fifty works by Pablo Picasso (1881- 1973) are on display in this exhibition entitled "Pablo Picasso: Structures of Invention. The unity of a work". Through this exhibition, the art gallery has taken pains to show Picasso's work as a whole (paintings, sculptures, drawings, ceramics and graphic work) without separating it by periods or styles, as we are used to with this artist. However, the connections between the different periods of the Malaga-born artist can be perfectly appreciated. An exhibition that should not be overlooked. And without ceasing to stroll through the streets of Malaga but offering our senses the relaxation and tranquillity that is only possible by experiencing nature in situ, a highly recommended visit is the Botanical Garden of Malaga, which has 250,000 square metres and more than 2,000 species of plants and trees, making it one of the most exotic and diverse botanical gardens in Europe. PAG 02 a 13 ADS 59.qxp_Layout 1 19/3/<strong>24</strong> 13:37 Página 9 Along the same lines, and allowing ourselves to be swept away by the wildest beauty of nature, it is worth mentioning the Estepona Orchid Garden, the largest in Spain. There are more than 15,000 cubic metres with some 1,500 species, represented by more than 4,000 specimens that grow in a total of up to five different microclimates. The species have been selected for their beauty and originality, so that at any time of the year you can enjoy hundreds of blooms, which means that whenever you visit, no matter how many times, you will find novelties and variations. A luxury for our senses. Marbella, as the cultural nerve centre of the Costa del Sol together with Malaga, is not particularly noted for its wide range of museums. However, we must underline the brilliant role played by the Museo del Grabado Español Contemporáneo (Museum of Contemporary Spanish Engraving). Since its opening in 1992, the Museo del Grabado has been a centre for reflection and action on art in capital letters, as well as a reference point for contemporary engraving, especially the world of original graphic art, making it palpable to the public through the continuous organisation of exhibitions, national engraving prizes, engraving workshops, conferences, congresses, a specialised library, etc. To house this museum, the Marbella Town Hall fitted out the old Bazán Hospital, a monumental building in itself, as it is a representative example of 16th century Renaissance civil architecture, located in the Old Town of Marbella and declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with the category of Monument. In Malaga and the Costa del Sol, culture and art are a key part of everything the southern area of Andalusia has to offer its residents and visitors. Proof of this, and a fundamental part of the identity of the culture, is flamenco. There are a multitude of tablaos and shows scattered all along the coast that make you feel the depth of flamenco singing. Something similar to what is experienced during Holy Week, where fervour and admiration merge with art and passion. A full stop that gives way to a summer open to all audiences.
