Whilst Simmental has a distinguished past, thebreed has an even bigger job lined up forthe future, says Vikki Wood. “An increasingnumber of commercial producers are becomingaware that Simmental will introduce more milk andsubsequently faster growth to a suckler herd; that’smassive and there’s no other breed which can achievethat.“In fact, Simmental bred cattle have been proven*to be the most efficient in terms of reduced days toslaughter and reduced finishing costs which can onlymean one thing – more profit and in turn, a moreefficient and sustainable enterprise with a lowercarbon footprint,” she explains. “That’s not all, modernSimmental genetics are leaving easy fleshed cattleproducing high quality beef.”Simmental bred cattlehave been proven* to bethe most efficient in terms ofreduced days to slaughter andreduced finishing costs”Vikki speaks from experience, not only from farmingwith her husband, Jimmy and managing the notedLancashire based Popes pedigree Simmental herdbut also sharing with him a combined eight decadesof procuring cattle for their fresh meat wholesalebusiness, Bowland Foods. The businesses are verymuch a family affair, with their son Harry 30 years, anddaughter Hannah 26, involved in both.“We instinctively know which live cattle when hungup will meet our customers’ requirements, andSimmental genetics have a role to play.”Since the Woods established their wholesale meatbusinesses, it has grown exponentially to currentlyemploy an 80 strong team weekly sourcing up to450 cattle, 800 pigs and 1,000 lambs to supplyindependent butchers shops, catering butchers andother outlets with carcases and a complete range ofcuts.
