GENERAL SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION
The Michael Prize
Presented bi-annually, this prize was
originally set up to stimulate epilepsy
research among young scientists
in Germany.
It has now developed into an
international award for the best
scientific and clinical research,
promoting further development
in epileptology.
The recipients of the Michael Prize
2009 are:
Hrissanthi Ikonomidou (USA)
Ivan Soltesz (USA)
The presentation of this award will take
place during the Opening Ceremony
on Sunday evening.The winning
researchers will also present their
papers during the Prize Symposium to
be held on Monday 29 th June between
16:00 and 17:30 in Hall 5.
The Morris-Coole Prize
The Morris-Coole prize awarded by
ILAE is the initiative of Mr. and Mrs.
Christopher Morris-Coole, from London,
who have endowed the prize.
The annual prize of €10,000 is awarded
to the first author of the paper
published in Epilepsia during the
preceding year which has, in the judges’
opinion, made the most significant
advance in knowledge in the field
of epilepsy.
The prize has been awarded to
Dr. Julia Jacobs for her abstract entitled:
‘Interictal high-frequency oscillations
(80-500 Hz) are an indicator of seizure
onset areas independent of spikes in the
human epileptic brain.’
(Epilepsia. 2008 49:1893-907).
Her findings will be presented during
the Prize Symposium on Monday 29 th
June from 16:00 - 17:30 in Hall 5.

Lifetime Achievement Award
The Lifetime Achievement Award
in Epilepsy is given jointly by the
International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE)
and the International League against
Epilepsy (ILAE).The Award is given to
an individual to recognise and honour
his or her exceptional and outstanding
personal contribution over a long
period of time to activities that advance
the cause of epilepsy.
The Award reflects international
peer recognition. It consists of two
commemorative and inscribed silver
candlesticks, a financial prize of
US$5,000, a scroll and the name of
each recipient is added to the Lifetime
Achievement Award winners’ Hall of
Fame maintained by IBE and ILAE.
This Award is the highest honour of IBE
and ILAE.
The recipients of the Lifetime
Achievement Award are:
Jean Aicardi (France)
Hanneke De Boer (The Netherlands)
Social Accomplishment Award
The Social Accomplishment Award
in Epilepsy is given jointly by the
International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE)
and the International League against
Epilepsy (ILAE) every two years. It is
given to an individual to recognise his or
her outstanding personal contribution
to activities that have resulted in a
significant advance in the social wellbeing
and / or quality of life of people
with epilepsy.
The Award reflects international peer
recognition. It consists of an engraved
glass trophy, a financial prize of
US$5,000, a certificate and the name of
each recipient is added to the Award
winners’ Hall of Fame maintained by IBE
and ILAE.
The recipient of the Social
Accomplishment Award is:
Michael Hills (New Zealand)
