ROCKFORD — In the wake of weather reports
concerning excessive rainfall, flooding has become
a concern once again in the Rock River Valley.
With more rain projected and the Rock River on
the rise in certain areas, both in Rock and
Winnebago counties, it is important to have a disaster
plan in place, according to a news releasefrom
the Rock River Chapter of the American Red
Cross:
The Red Cross offers the following tips:
Know what to expect
Know your area’s flood risk. If you’re unsure,
call the Rock River Chapter at (815) 963-8471,
your community’s emergency-management office
or planning and zoning department.
If it has been raining hard for several hours or
raining steadily for several days, be alert to the
possibility of a flood.
Prepare a family disaster plan
Check to see if your insurance covers flooding,
and find out how to get flood insurance.
Keep insurance policies and documents in a
safety deposit box.
Reduce potential flood damage
Raise your furnace, water heater and electric
panel if they are in easily flooded areas of the
home.

Consult with a professional for additional possibilities
regarding precautionary measures that
could help reduce damage to your home in a flood
situation.
It is important to recognize the difference
between flash floods and regular flooding, as well
as the differences between a flood watch and a
flood warning.
A flood watch means a flood is possible in your
area. Move your furniture and valuables to a higher
area of your home, and fill your car’s tank with
gas, in case of evacuation.
A flash flood watch means flash flooding,
which could occur in a matter of minutes or hours,
is possible in your area. Be ready to evacuate at a
moment’s notice.
A flood warning means flooding already is
occurring or soon will occur in your area. Listen to
local radio and TV stations for advice, and if told
to evacuate, do so immediately.
A flash-flood warning means that a flash flood
already is occurring or will occur very soon in your
area. You may only have seconds to evacuate, so
act quickly. If your car stalls in water, abandon it
immediately and move to higher ground.
