Comments From C.E.O.… Doug Fee Your membership renewal forms were sent out in the mail in December and many Albertans have already mailed them in. The Canadian office will be mailing your female inventories and applications for registration in mid January so you know we’ll be thinking about you. For those of you who are interested in doing things electronically Wendy Newton has agreed to help us work our way through our HerdMaster mixups. We still think it’s a great program with super possibilities but our introduction was less than outstanding. Wendy is very helpful and will be happy to help any of our purchasers put the program to work. The Canadian office operates on a fiscal year that coincides with the calendar year. This makes sense to me but sometimes causes confusion when my statements for Alberta don’t line up with the Alberta report issued in December. However you add them up 2006 was a good year for Canadian Angus and for Angus in Alberta. We had a record number of registrations in Canada—60,744. Forty seven percent (47%) of these were from Alberta. Registrations in Alberta were up 8% from 2005 and ended the year at 28,563. If that doesn’t make you feel good, consider that we increased from 26,537 in 2005 and 22,999 in 2004. I gave a very optimistic report at the Alberta annual meeting in December and now that I’ve had the opportunity to review our year end statistics and see the results of some of the year end sales I am even more optimistic. Although we were victims of prosperity in 2006 and experienced unacceptable delays in work flow, things now seem to be under control. We’ve added an extra person to the registry crew and have hired Camille Scott to look after Breed Development. Having said we are catching up, our mail today was as voluminous as a busy day in June and it looks like we are in for a very successful New Year. World Angus Forum Futurity Dear Fellow Breeders: As Chairman of the 2009 World Angus Forum Futurity Committee, it is my distinct pleasure to announce the World Angus Forum "WAF Futurity" program. The goal of the WAF Futurities is to create awareness and excitement for the 2009 World Angus Forum, to engage breeders from across Canada, to encourage breeders to exhibit cattle at Spruce Meadows in 2009 at the World Angus Forum and keep Angus in the forefront. Detailed information is included in the enclosed documents. As an overview, the WAF Futurity is a Canadian program and is open to members of the Canadian Angus Association and the cattle participating must be registered in the Canadian Angus Herdbook. The vision is that WAF Futurity shows will be held in the Regions designated as British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. The final leg of the 2009 WAF Futurity will crown a Red Angus and Black Angus female and bull champion. In the years 2007 and 2008 we are leaving it open to the Regions to decide if they wish to run a separate Red and Black division or a combined Red and Black show based on numbers participating. Futurity Plans: 2007 - Heifer Calves and Bull Calves 2008 -Yearling Heifers and Yearling Bulls that were shown as calves in the 2007 WA-F Futurity in any one of the regional-designated shows. 2009 - Two Year Old with Natural Calf at side and Two Year Old Bulls that were shown as calves in the 2007 WAF Futurity in any one of the regional-designated shows and as yearlings in the 2008 WAF Futurity in any one of the regional-designated shows. Your first deadline for this program is March 1. 2007. By this date we would like your Region to declare where and when your show will be for 2007 in order to allow us time to promote the event nationally. We will need to know who will be your regional WAF Futurity chairperson. This person would be the direct contact point and all official communications would travel between me (Brian Geis) as chairman of the WAF Futurity and the designated regional chairpersons. We encourage your Region along with your breeders get involved in the WAF Futurity to make the final leg of the WAF Futurity in 2009 at Spruce Meadows a truly Canadian event.
