<strong>Mutation</strong>s <strong>and</strong> <strong>recurrent</strong> <strong>variation</strong> 55<br />
Table 2. Types <strong>of</strong> mutants in barley (according to Lundqvist (60); numbers in brackets<br />
added by W.-E.L).<br />
Taking <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> all research stations <strong>and</strong> <strong>breeding</strong> companies around<br />
<strong>the</strong> world toge<strong>the</strong>r, probably millions <strong>of</strong> barley mutants were induced. Of <strong>the</strong>se<br />
only 25 were found to be acceptable for <strong>the</strong> list <strong>of</strong> commercial barley cultivars<br />
<strong>and</strong> 33 were added due to recombination (34). However, since <strong>the</strong> average<br />
cultivation time <strong>of</strong> a commercial barley line is only about 10 years, most <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>se lines will not be cultivated any more.
